Meet Kicking Daisies

A third season of Radio Disney’s Next Big Thing (N.B.T.) is in full force. Are you following along? The multi-platform feature, which launched the career of Allstar Weekend, is putting the spotlight on five fresh acts this fall, giving them national broadcast and online exposure separately for two weeks at a time.

Over the next 10 weeks, Radio Disney and Disney Channel audiences can snag a look and listen at the talented artists, voting for their faves at RadioDisney.com or by texting “NBT" to DISNEY (347639) (message and data rates may apply so ask for the ’rents permission first).

The highest ranked N.B.T. artist at the end of it all will have the opportunity to have their single released by Disney Music Group and open for Allstar Weekend at a special holiday performance. Amazing!

Which N.B.T. act is up next? Kicking Daisies—a rock band consisting of Ben Spremulli, 14, on guitar, 15-year-old frontman Duran Visek, drummer Caitlin Kalafus, 17, and her 14-year-old sister Carly as bassist—on-air from Sept. 29 – Oct. 12.

Who exactly is Kicking Daisies and why do they rock? GL caught up with them to get the dirt. Check it out…

GL: How did the four of you meet and what made you want to start a band?

Ben: I used to play a lot of local shows. After one show, two-time Grammy award-winning producer Mike Mangini introduced himself [later introducing me to] Duran. We decided we wanted to start a band, so we looked for drummers on the internet. We eventually found Caitlin, jammed for a bit, and then when we were looking for a bassist, Caitlin asked Carly to join. We practiced a lot and eventually started playing shows. That’s how Kicking Daisies began.

What is the song featured on N.B.T., “Keeping Secrets,” about?
Duran: “Keeping Secrets” is about a tricky relationship with an ongoing love/hate thing—both boy and girl teasing each other, etc. We actually just shot a video for it last weekend which was so much fun.

What is the biggest thing you hope listeners take away from your music?
Caitlin: We hope when fans listen to our music they feel like they can connect with what our songs are about. We try to write about things any person, no matter how old or young, can [relate] to so that they know they’re never alone. We write about personal experiences or stuff we see other people go through.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to other teens looking to break into the music industry?
Caitlin: If you're looking to start a band of your own, have fun with it! Remember that practice makes perfect and if you don't get it the first time, don't give up. There might be some days where writing a song is super hard and you have major writer’s block but it'll come back to you. Just have fun and play every show like it's your last!

If you win N.B.T.
, what’s the first thing you’ll do?
Carly: The first thing we're going to do is scream (without hurting our vocal chords) and then thank our fans for supporting us in all that we do…and then go celebrate with our entire KD family.
