Taking My Friendship Offline

I have a friend who I’ve known since first grade. We always hung out with each other up until third grade when we both moved. We still talked over the phone, but then it just stopped.

I found her on Twitter and we started talking again. Should I ask her to hang out or just keep talking online—I'm afraid of what her response will be.

Hey girlie,

I think you should ask her to hang out! It can be really fun to catch up with old friends that you haven't seen in a long time. If you two can find things to talk about online, you'll have things to talk about in person, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Since you've been talking for a while, I don't think it would weird at all to ask if she wanted to hang out. If you're really nervous about her response, maybe suggest something low-key, like going to see a new movie or hanging out with a group of people. That way, if she does turn you down, it won't be too disappointing because you won't have planned something elaborate.

It might also be a good idea to keep the time frame for whatever you two end up doing to a couple of hours. That way, if you don't get along in real life the way you did online or the way you used to, you have to spend an entire day together. Talking on the phone first might be a good way to see if you actually do click.

And not to sound too much like your mom, but whenever you're meeting someone you talked to on the Internet, it's a good idea to make sure they are who they say they are—safety first!

xoxo,

Alissa
