The Legend of Lucy Keyes

Here's a ghostly poem written by a GL reader for our 13 Days of Halloween Ghost Story Contest. Let us know what you think and be sure to check each day for another ghastly tale!

The Keyes were a wealthy family. They bought a large plot of land and went about building a house. One day, Martha Keyes sent her two oldest daughters, Patty and Anna, to go get some white sand for cleaning purposes. She told her youngest daughter, Lucy, not to go because she was too small and unable to keep up. Then Martha went back to work on her spinning wheel.

When Patty and Anna arrived home, they realized that Lucy was gone. The whole town joined in the search. Martha called Lucy's name for hours, but she was never found.

Years later, the town hermit, Tilly Littlejohn, confessed to committing the murder. He said he had come across the little girl in the woods and was immediately filled with hatred. He struck her once in the head, knocking her unconscious. Realizing that when she woke up, he would be discovered, he struck her twice more, killing her.

Some say they can still hear Martha's voice calling out Lucy's name every night and the sounds of a little girl’s screams.
