Meet Matthew Johnson

A third season of Radio Disney’s Next Big Thing (N.B.T.) is in full force. Are you following along? The multi-platform feature, which launched the career of Allstar Weekend, is putting the spotlight on five fresh acts this fall, giving them national broadcast and online exposure separately for two weeks at a time.
Over the next 10 weeks, Radio Disney and Disney Channel audiences can snag a look and listen at the talented artists, voting for their faves at RadioDisney.com or by texting “NBT" to DISNEY (347639) (message and data rates may apply so ask for the ’rents permission first).
The highest ranked N.B.T. artist at the end of it all will have the opportunity to have their single released by Disney Music Group and open for Allstar Weekend at a special holiday performance. Amazing!
Which N.B.T. artist is up next? Matthew Johnson—a 13-year-old pop singer and songwriter—on-air from Oct. 27-Nov. 9.

Who exactly is Matthew and why does he rock? We caught up with the teen to find out…

GL: What was your first reaction when you found out you were going to be featured on N.B.T.?
Matthew: I was super excited. It’s Radio Disney and since N.B.T. is on Disney Channel, too, it’s just a great opportunity.

Besides music and acting, you train as a circus performer!  What encouraged you to start doing something so unique?
I love trying new things. They have cool equipment to work with.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to other teens looking to break into the music industry?
Love it and practice! Those two things have helped me along the way, and it’s the best advice I can pass along.

What is the song featured on N.B.T., “Light It Up,” about?
To me, it’s about sharing your inner light with people and also about just having a good time.

If you win N.B.T.
, what’s the first thing you’ll do?
I’ll send a huge thanks to everyone who has supported me. I’ll be so excited if I win, and I’ll definitely thank Radio Disney and my parents, of course.
