Shake up your school dance with Zendaya

Primping for your school’s winter soiree? Good thing we hit up Zendaya to help shake things up a bit.

The 14-year-old cutie currently stars as Rocky Blue, the kindhearted, funny Shake It Up, Chicago! background dancer on Disney Channel’s hit buddy comedy series Shake It Up. Here, the fashionista lends some insight into how to put your own spin on your upcoming class festivities.

Dress it up. Think outside of the single dress scene. Pulling together different pieces can make a look so Y-O-U. “[I’d wear a] sequined top, some black skinny jeans, a blazer and some cute combat boots—and some jewelry of course. You always have to accessorize.”

Pack it up. Be sure to double-check the clutch for your three must-have essentials before jetting off for the night, Cinderella. What does Zendaya always carry? “Clear lip gloss (you can put it over anything), some lotion and my phone.”

Friend it up. Have a fear of the dance floor? Rally your girls and embrace it as a gang. “The best thing to do is just grab a few of your friends and go out there together. You won’t feel as shy as if you were by yourself and you still get to have the experience.”

Plan it up. And why not make that experience one everyone will remember! Prep a mini routine with your besties to show everyone what you’ve got on the floor. “Bella [Thorne, who plays CeCe on the show] and I love being random. We’ll all of a sudden make up a dance together. I do like a turn and then pop sort of thing on the show. I guess you could say it’s my signature move. That’s something I love to do.”

Pump it up. Don’t be afraid to request your favorite tunes to the DJ. Hey, that’s what he’s there for! Kick it old school with decades-old to give partygoers a special surprise. “I love anything from Michael Jackson.”

Zendaya’s go-to good mood song? “Diva” by Beyoncé. “I played that while I was cleaning my bathroom and it got me pumped.”

Be sure to catch Zendaya and the rest of the Shake It Up gang every Sunday on Disney Channel.
