CrazziePants96,

I totally understand how annoying this situation can be. My mother is still on my case about me going out and hanging out with my friends too and I’m 24!!

Unfortunately, your mother will most likely always think of you as her baby. My mother tells me I’ll understand when I have my own children, so I’m passing along the advice to you. I know it’s really hard for you to understand your mom right now, but she is only doing this because she cares and loves you so much.

Don’t worry though, in due time you’ll be able to get to do everything your little heart desires. If your sister, who is 18 months older than you can shave, then I’m sure in 18 months you’ll be able to shave too. I know it seems long right now, but I promise time will fly by. And just to let you know, shaving is not as great as it’s cracked up to be. It’s actually a HUGE pain in the you know where.

But if you absolutely can’t hold out any longer and are completely at your wits end with your mom, go talk to her. Let her know that your growing up and you want some independence. She still probably won’t let you join a rock band and get your nose pierced, but she might let you go to the mall with your friends if you had a chaperone (say maybe your big sis?). Talk it out and try to come to some compromises.

Remember, baby steps are key! Start off telling your mom you don’t like being called Haney, then gradually over time work your way up to bigger stuff like shopping at Abercrombie or shaving.

Hope this helps,
Jiae
