Tips to start your own garden

Alexandra Reau, 15, really digs her job. She has her own business called Garden to Go, a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) that sells fresh fruits and veggies from her farm to her neighbors. Alexandra’s plot is filled with everything from kale to watermelon—and she rakes in over $100 per membership! Plus, she’s got fab advice for girls who want to test their green thumb this spring.

Be patient. “You have to wait for a garden to grow. That can be hard, but it’s worth it when you see this blank slate—just dirt and seeds—turn into something beautiful.”

Start small. “It’s better to start with things that are easy to grow like tomatoes, zucchini and squash. Ease your way into it so you don’t get flustered and give up.”

Ask for help. “This was my first garden, so I had to ask for advice from my parents and people at the local farm stand. I used to be nervous to talk to strangers, but now I feel friendlier and I’ve learned so much!”
