8 facts about Super 8's Joel Courtney

Brace yourself, babes. Joel Courtney is one star on the fast track to superstardom. He’s making his debut in the J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg summer thriller Super 8, hitting screens next Friday, June 10.

In Super 8, Joel takes on the role of Joe, a kid who loves moviemaking (circa 1979) and must abruptly deal with the mysterious disappearances in his town after witnessing a chaotic train crash while shooting a zombie flick with his buds and crush Alice (played by Elle Fanning).

While little has been released about the flick so far (keeping with its mysterious theme), we were intrigued to learn even more about its star. So we caught up with Joel and learned these eight surprising things about the cutie…

He’s tight with Stephen Spielberg. “He told me to stay grounded and humble because that keeps me from getting my head too big and going off my rocker.”

He likes stirring some trouble. “My friends and I have made it a tradition to play tag [when we’re] in hotels. We’ve gotten in trouble every time.”

Snakes gross him out. “They just…ugh. I’m not afraid of them, but they’re just so nasty.”

He loves to do his own stunts. “My favorite [Super 8] scene would have to be the train scene. The train’s getting crashed and it’s so crazy. It was a lot of fun [to film] because we had to do our own stunts.”

He can’t get enough Fla-Vor-Ice pops. “They’re like shaved ice and I love them. My brother and I eat them all the time together.”

“Firework” is his go-to summer tune. “I love that song, and I just love July [and] fireworks.”

He thinks his costar Elle Fanning is a sweetie. “I always imagined her to be a really nice person and she really is.”

He knows you’re going to love Super 8. “It is a fantastic movie and there’s multiple things for every person. If you’re a girl then you’re gonna love the romance—the first crush scenario with Elle and I.”

Wanna see more of Joel? He’ll be presenting some never-before-seen footage of Super 8 at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards alongside Elle Fanning, J.J. Abrams and Stephen Spielberg. Be sure to catch it this Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
