Girl Talk: Public Speaking Freaks Me Out

alex.jpg

I have a hard time speaking in class. Whether it's in front of the class, to the class, sitting in my seat or answering a question, I get really nervous. This summer I tried working on building my confidence and it helped because this first day of school went much better than past years! I'm finding it easier to talk to people and speak up in class, but I'm still not 100%. One time my teacher made us say our names, read a quote from a famous poet, and then explain what the quote means. As it got closer to my turn, I got extremely nervous. I was literally shaking. I tried everything to calm myself down and to relieve the stress, but nothing worked! I stuttered at the end of my quote, and felt so stupid afterwards. It was only after the next 5 kids went that I started to calm down again. I don't know what to do. I was going to take a speech elective this year, but then I dropped it cause I was afraid I'd get a bad grade and lower my GPA. Is there anything besides speech class that can help me be less nervous and more confident when I speak in class?'

-Alex'

Ciao ciao jellybean!

Public speaking is actually a fear for loads of people. Trust me, I bet most people in your class get a little freaked out when their turn rolls around. It's great though that you've acknowledged one of your shortcomings and are trying to work on it!

Practice makes perfect! The only real way to get over speaking to crowds is to keep on doing it. The more you do it, the less and less your fear will be. Try not to over-think things so much. So ya stuttered, who doesn't? If you really pay attention to everyone that speaks, you'll notice that they've made a gazillion mistakes in their presentations too! You're being too hard on yourself. No one will remember that ya messed up, and I bet most people didn't even notice the mistakes that ya made. Honestly, the more embarrassed you get, the more embarrassing you become. The next time ya stumble, act like it's not big deal. If you act like it, not only will you eventually feel it, but everyone around you will think it too. What's important is not that you've failed, but that you have the courage to pick yourself back up and try again.

I think you should totally take that speech elective. If you come across a problem, the only way you can change it is to face it head on! You've said that you worked on your problem over the summer and have already seen changes. Well then continue to do what you were doing before because it's obviously working. Nothing happens overnight, just keep at it and one day you'll eventually notice that you're totally comfortable.

Also, preparation is key. There are those blessed souls that can just wing things and be calm and collected in any scenario, but since you're not, ya gotta prepare yourself. Practice your speeches at home until you know it like the back of your hand. And take your time. The next time you start buggin' out during a spiel for class, stop and take a deep breath. Ya might think you'll look dumb doing that, but wouldn't you rather look dumb for a few seconds then through your whole presentation.

I have a feeling you will be A-OK.

Keep your chin up,
Jiae

heyy
one think that you could do is get to know the people in your class.
become friends with some of them
then it will be like talking in front of your friends
and then you will also have friends in the classroom that yyou know will be there for you
another thing is you could zone out the people and pretend like thier not there
just breathe and think about what you are going to say
im sure youll do great

Hey Mod got a sec?

Well I'm getting back into the swing of things at school and I really like my teachers; but one particularly my English teacher. She likes me alot but a little too much. I am unfourtunatly... dare I say, Teacher's Pet. She gives me skittles, Lets me take her little boy to Pre-K and not to mention goes to my church. So thats not exactly the problem but with every teacher's pet there's the jealous class mates. They absoulutly HATE me. I really had nothing to do with it. I'm not like decalring "I'M TEACHER'S PET!" but I don't say A WORD. So I don't get it. Yes, I've told them to stop, I've ignored them, and told someone. It's seriosly getting annoying. Any way to ditch the teacher's-pet disease?

-Kathryn

Oh, man, I know how you feel. The same thing happens to me, 'cause I'm one of the only people actually willing to answer questions. Try speaking to the teacher. Explain the sitch (that kids are incessantly picking on you) and ask if she could try to treat you more like the rest of the students, at least during class. She should understand. Other than that, there's unfortunately not much else you can do, besides just stick it out and try to ignore them as much as you can. What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, right?

I will answer your question, I promise. I have about 45 questions still waiting for answers, though, so it might still take awhile longer. I'm sorry you've had to wait so long, but I really appreciate your patience.

Mod!!!!

i need help. i just drove to the school dance, 007 themed, and everyone was going out to the parking lot saying "its so bad, dont go". i didnt like the idea of being around juniors and seniors, with no adult supervision, who probably had beer and drugs, so i called my dad to come pick me up, even though some friends were staying. i am so sad that this was how my first highschool dance turned out? did i make the right decision? i wanted it to be a fun night and see my crush, but it turned out horrible.

sad with loves,
amelia

I think you made the right decision. It's sad that your first high school dance was a disappointment, but I'm very impressed with how you handled the situation. It takes a lot of strength of character and strong morals to be able to turn down a fun event with your friends because of alcohol, drugs, and the lack of supervision. You'll have lots of other chances to hang out with your crush and to go to dances. In the end, you'll be glad you avoided a bad situation. Hope your night got better!

hey! i'm taking speech as a class, and every1 gets nervous, and i think the point of taking speech is to help you speak better in public, so if you take it, it will def. help you. im taking it and it's loads of fun.

oh, also - you're SO not alone in this public speaking thing. i know 5 million people who are scared of it. i'm the only one i know who ENJOYS it!

anyway, apparently, my 5th grade teacher told me oh-so-long-ago, that the #1 fear of people in america is public speaking (even more than dying!). so apparently, people would rather be in the coffin than giving the eulogy! just thought that was... er, rather clever. anyway. not sure if it's true or not, but, yea....

i have to say, i am SO not the one to give you advice on this problem. public speaking has always just come naturally too me, and i can't understand why my family, friends, and basically the rest of the world have trouble with it!

what gets me worked up, though, is playing the clarinet for a test or audition. last spring we had to audition to be in the good band in 8th grade, and i was soooo scared i was shaking. after that first audition, our music teacher dropped the bomb: PRACTICE AUDITION! so there was still another one? what a meanie! but at least it gave me time to prepare... and i found out a few things along the way.

before you have to do a presentation, listen to some serious pick-me-up songs. dance like crazy in your room, make weird moose-like gestures to yourself in the mirror, and really act... silly. absurb. insane, even! be the goofiest you have ever been in your entire life! good songs are, "bad reputation" (joan jett), "good girl, bad boy" (junior senior), "break my stride" (matthew wilder), "walking on sunshine," (katrina & the waves), "pump it" (black eyed peas), "let's get it started," (black eyed peas), and "invincible" (ok go). if you need more songs... just ask! those are just a few of some great i-need-energizing songs!

once you're at school, you'll be nervous... i have to give you that. but remember the morning you spent rocking out, being goofy, and try to make yourself crack up.
