Workouts

GET MOVING! Turn Your Living Room Into A Real Home Gym!

Don’t wanna workout in the cold? Us either. Convert your living room into a gym with this super-simple, all-over body blast. Bonus: When you’re ready to collapse, your couch will be right there to catch ya!

Warm Up:

Get those muscles loose by spending five minutes on cardio. A walk around the block works. Or stay inside and jog in place, walk up and down the stairs or do tonsa jumping jacks. Now you’re ready!

Instructions:

Celeb trainer Valerie Waters recommends doing 12-15 reps for leg exercises, 8-10 reps for arms and 15-20 for abs. For frog jumps, mountain climbers and scissor jumps you should repeat as many time as you can in 30 seconds.

Start out by doing the circuit once. After a few weeks, you can repeat the circuit 3-4 times through.

Dips:

Sit on the edge of a sturdy chair (not your grandma’s rocker!) with your legs parallel to the floor. Firmly grip the edge of the chair and scoot your butt off. Bend your elbows, and then slowly straighten your arms. That’s one!

Frog jumps:

Stand with your legs slightly wider than hip width. Tuck your butt in and bend at the knees until your hands touch the floor. Jump as high as you can, raising your hands up above your head.

Drawbridges:

Lie down with your back on the floor. Bend your knees and plant your feet on the ground, about hips-width apart. Keep your arms on the floor, next to your body. Pull your bellybutton in (imagine you’re trying to make it touch your spine). Use your arms to support yourself and clench your butt and raise your hips off the ground. Slowly lower yourself back down. Repeat.

Leg lifts:

Lie on your right side, with your legs stacked on top of each other. Your left arm can be propped in front of your waist for support and your right arm should be extended out past your ear on the floor. Lift your left leg up (without twisting your hips!) and slowly drop it down. Repeat on the right side.

Mountain climbers:

Get in a pushup position. Bend your left leg, so your knee comes toward your chest. Push off your left leg, so it straightens out. At the same time, bend your right knee so it comes up near your chest. Keep switching quickly between the two legs.

Bicycles:

Lie on your back, with your hands clasped behind your head. Bend your right knee, while crunching your abs. Twist your torso so your left elbow touches your right knee just above your belly button. Slowly switch sides and repeat.

Scissor jumps:

Put hands on hips. Step forward about 2-3 feet with your left leg. Jump up, switch your legs mid-air and land with your right leg in front. Make sure you bend both knees at the end to get a little lunge action in. Repeat!

Squats:

Stand with feet slightly more than hip-width apart. Bend your knees so your thighs are parallel with the ground. Slowly stand back up.

Reach ‘n’ kicks:

Get on all fours, with hands shoulder-width apart and knees hip-width apart. Your hands and knees should be in a line. Slowly extend your left arm in front of you. At the same time, slowly kick your right leg behind you. Take a breath, and place hand and knee back where they started. Repeat on the other side.

Check back in a couple weeks to get some bonus exercises!

The temps are scorching, so I'm not exercising outside, especially during the hottest hours. I'm working out indoors on the really hot days with this workout. Strength training is crucial for toning up, so I'm staying in once of twice a week and getting buff!

beccaboo2013 on 7/7/2009 10:34:53 PM

this sounds perfect!

MOD
what is a rep?

Hey Girl,

A rep is a repetition. When you are doing crunches it may say 25 reps x3 that means 25 crunches 3 dif times. Hope this helps!

Becca on 12/14/2007 10:23:05 PM

The holidays 4 me is a love-hate thing. I love being off school and being with my family, but I hate the weight gain that commonly comes w/ it. I'm confuzzeled. Any tips on at least not gaining anymore weight?

KathyGurl13 on 12/12/2007 10:45:48 PM

Ugg! I've gained like 5lbs. in the past 2 weeks! I've been so busy finishing projects b4 the holidays that I haven't had ANY time to exersize. Thankfully all the organics and weight loss foods go on sale January 1st all over the U.S.. I'm still ticked about that weight gain, and to be honest, I think it all was on my neck.
:-(

KathyGurl13 on 12/12/2007 10:42:29 PM

These are a lot of fun!!!!!!! I want more to do!!!!!!

Angie on 12/8/2007 11:51:11 PM

EmeraldEyes, I couldn't agree more with you. You are absolutely right.

Drummer girl 13 , I'm so sorry to hear that you were in a car accident! I hope you feel better soon!

zimza- i know you posted a while ago, but if you want to gain weight, I would recommend a couple things. 1. Do NOT eat only junk food (like ice cream, chips, candy, donuts, etc.) because that is only going to HARM you. You will probably gain weight, but it will be all FAT, not muscle. 2. Talk to a doctor or a nutritonist. I know I'm always saying that, but they are the ones that can find out what best for you, based on the specific needs of YOU!

Hey MOD
im a gymnast, and go to my gymto do 3 hour workouts for 3 days a week, and once a mounth, i do a 8 hour day on saturday. when ever i get home, i am so tired all i want to do is go to sleep, but i have to do my homework. is there such a thing of too much excersize?

There is such a thing as too much exercise, but I think you're schedule sounds fine. Talk it over with your parents and coach if you find yourself constantly exhausted.

overlyobsessedjonasbrothersfan on 11/20/2007 12:50:13 AM

I just printed the Workout stuff and I am going to do it in my room and study for a huge science test I have on Tuesday. I am really bad at science so I am going to fail! But when I workout and study at the same time, it really helps me push myself in studies and in excisersing. For example, if I get a question wrong, on a notecard, I might have to do 5 more sit-ups. Sometimes I will be doing sit-ups all night.

Elaine on 11/18/2007 8:31:10 PM

p 0 0 h b e a r x on 11/16/2007 11:52:08 PM

Hey annonmous! A way that I stay on diets over weekends is I go do something in my community, church, or circle of freinds. It keeps me occupied and on my diet! Also, if I can't do those things one weekend, I clean my room to some active music( I listen to Weird Al or Dolly Parton). I laso just work on my homework and make sure I do a super good job. Usually I drink water during the activities so that once I'm done, I don't feel famished. Hope this helps u stay on. Tip: Don't try crash diets, go on healthy diets such as South Beach, Organic low sugar diet, or a semi-vegitarian diet( u still each poultry, fish, and dairy, but u sustitute beef and other meats for tofu and vagtable sustetutes). Hope this helps u get healthy!
:-D

KathyGurl13 on 11/16/2007 7:34:22 PM

this stuff looks really easy. I want to get my stomach in shape by like summer so i can wear a two peice, so this should work.

actressgirl55 on 11/16/2007 7:27:49 PM

I know this doesnt have anything to do with the home gym thing but I have found other ways to lose a little weight.

What girl dosen't want to lose a pound or two? Well I have found a way that may help. Here are some tips that might help you lose that pound.

Say you go into school early. And you want your mom to drop you off at the door closest to your locker or first class. Instead have her drop you off farther from the classroom. I know it is only about 200 more feet but 200 more feet is better than 10 feet.

When you in the shower walk in place. It wont make you sweat so your getting clean and getting exercise at the same time.

Or when your studying for a test walk around the room.

I know all these things are little but little steps can make a big difference in the end.

This post is so great. I did it for a couple of days a week ago. I had a really bad cold for almost a week and I was and still are tired, so I could not do it and miss gym for a couple days. Anyway, this is great because it gives you ideas on how to get moving inside because it is so cold where I live now! How about you all?

Oh your welcome Kathygurl. Thanks for answering! I was just wondering because if you were not as overweight as you were(but now are getting better) you should not lose weight or as much weight. That's great on how you improved!

Elizabeth on 11/16/2007 5:27:59 PM

annonomous: yeah same as above...think i should be healthy. By diet to u mean fad diets like akins and stuff cause those r kinda worthless. Just try sticking to like wheat bread and pasta, low calorie snacks and lots of fruits veggies and water. also if u can try to get cardio which is like running dancing biking or jumproping is good also. plus if u start building muscle, it burns up calories easier and helps u get fit

greeneyes on 11/14/2007 11:59:29 PM

Annonomous:
Do not just think, "I must lose weight," think, "I must be healthy." If all you think about is your weight, you won't stick with it, because it doesn't make you happy. Concentrate on how good you'll feel once you've gotten to your desired shape, not how poor your shape is now. Think positive, and the positive will happen.
Also, you will need more than a diet to get healthy: you should also exercise. Try the ones above, they're really great for building muscle, and when you use muscle, it's easier for women to lose weight(it's harder for us than men). And if you don't do those, just do anything other than sitting for about thirty minutes to an hour, depending on how much you sweat, three to four times a week. Good luck!

headlessfacesonparade on 11/14/2007 11:15:08 PM

Hey charlie! Haveing large legs is probably a genetic thing (since I have them 2), but doing leg exersizes and going on a healthy diet can benefit ur legs. Just running, jogging, walking more can help. Have Fun!

KathyGurl13 on 11/13/2007 10:23:20 PM

Hey Pretty n' Pink! Doing crunches, running, and all that simple stuff can get u in shape. And if u play sports, doing yoga can help ur endurance b/c u learn how to use more oxygen per breath. Yoga!
8-)
P.S. Dramachic and headlessfacelessperson, u could use this 2!

KathyGurl13 on 11/13/2007 10:20:47 PM

Hey Elizabeth! I used to weigh 195lbs.! It just really depressed me b/c I could be the width of two girls combined (at least that's what it felt like). I'm looking better, but I did gain a bit after Halloween also. Now my gole from 185lbs. to 175lbs. I'm about 5 foot 4, 5 foot 5, that is WAY too much, even for a scale perspective! My waistline is also 39in (the healthy is 32in 4 a girl my height). I have a fair amount of muscle too, b/c if u put me in a race against a bunch of skinnie minnies, I'll beat them in a heartbeat. So, I acually have a good exersize routine already, I just had 2 change my diet. I've never had a person ask b4 about me. Thanks!

KathyGurl13 on 11/13/2007 10:14:54 PM

I'm so happy! I just printed out the list of exercises, and tommorrow is the first winter guard meeting! I love color guard! It involves dance with flag/rifle/sabre spinning to cool music. My middle school did a Mario show once, and we totally rocked. This year, the band director at my high school wants the song to be Smashing Pumpkins. I don't know what song it is Frown , but the band is pretty cool. I get so much exercise in guard, and my muscles get BEEFY. Beef... it's what's for dinner. Except just kidding, because I'm eating pizza. I feel guilty, except I know I'm going to rock the house with my fitness very soon.

my top half of my body is fine. but my legs are huge, why? it is really annoying to wear shorts and skirts! help please...

charlie on 11/11/2007 5:27:37 PM

I have to get more exercise, my dad said, if I want an Xbox for Christmas. My mom also mentioned DDR. I just really don't want a Wii. As awesome as they are, I just have this thing against Nintendo.
My mom's getting an elliptical trainer, soon. She like to walk/jog and stuff, but it's really hard to do when you live at 9,000 feet in Winter, and there are no paved roads to speak of.
I plan on getting fit. I am not overweight, but I am so out of shape. I am going to gain more muscle mass, because I am not that strong, so I will probably gain weight, actually.
I am 16 years old, I am five feet, eight inches tall, and I way 161 pounds. YAY ME!!!

headlessfacesonparade on 11/11/2007 4:11:06 PM

this is great! i'm thin, but out of shape. i want to get stronger and in better shape (losing weight and getting in shape ARE different). Smile

Hey Jenny, I was planning on getting a dance dance revolution for Christmas! Now, I have even more reson to love it! Thanks!

KathyGurl13 on 11/10/2007 11:49:03 PM

Hey Health_Chic, it's me! About # 2 in ur Nov. 10th entry, it is not true bad eating habbits causes acne, it's hormones. In women, when there is an excess amount of hormones being released either from menstration or extra body fat, it makes the sweat gland go into overdrive. So then, dirt might be clogging a pore, and the excess oil gets trapped under that blocked pore and becomes infected. That is what causes acne. Smiles!
Smile

KathyGurl13 on 11/10/2007 11:46:13 PM

Emerald Eyes, u rock! I feel that same emotion of pride and frustration. My blood line is made up of European farmers and native american heritage. Belive me, farmers got some flurtatious hips and boutiful busomes! One downside is they are not as accepped now adays as they were in the 1700s! I love my curves, and I love being healthy, but sometimes people drive me mad in the media. Well, that-th-th-ats a-a-a-all f-folks!
