HEALTHY RECIPES: Pita Pizza

Just about anything can be transformed into a pizza crust. Besides packaged baked pizza crusts, you could use pita bread.

What You'll Need:

Olive oil
1 six, eight, or 10-inch baked pizza crust, pita bread
Thick spaghetti sauce (such as “Newman’s Own Pasta Sauce”)
8-ounces mozzarella or provolone (Buy it grated or you can grate.)

Optional: grated Parmesan or Romano cheese (not that canned stuff)

Easy Topping Ideas: Chopped broccoli or spinach, red, yellow, green peppers, very thinly sliced onions, sliced olives, quartered bottled artichokes, mushrooms, thickly sliced tomatoes, corn, etc.

What You'll Do:

1. Preheat the oven to 400. Cover the baking sheet with foil. Spread some olive oil onto the foil with a piece of paper towel. Put the crust onto the greased foil.

2. Spoon the sauce onto the crust, spreading a thin layer of sauce almost up to the edges. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the pizza; about one cup for an 8-inch pizza. Sprinkle on a little Parmesan cheese if you like. Make it a basic cheese or put on toppings.

3. Put into the oven and bake for 15 minutes until the cheese starts to brown. (You can use a toaster oven but you may have to cut the pizza in half to make it fit. Oil the foil and proceed. Watch it carefully – it’s easy to burn a pizza in the toaster oven.) Remove from the oven and slice into wedges.

You Decide: You’re the chef, create your own pizza. Maybe you like feta cheese and spinach or a pizza with sautéed mushrooms and smoked Gouda cheese. I know two girls who like frozen corn and pepper-jack cheese on their pizza. (Call it Tex-Mex Pizza.) If you’re in a hurry, use chopped, frozen vegetables. (They aren’t quite as nutritious as fresh veggies but they’re still veggies.)

Tools:

Large baking sheet
Aluminum foil
Pizza cutter or chef’s knife
Possibly, a cutting board

Hey babe! Before you over indulge after school start your meal with a glass of water or an apple!  Or try packing a snack in your backpack that you can have mid-day!

so ive wanted to start running more, but i dont really like to run outside so ive been running on our treadmill. my mom says running on the treadmill isnt the same, and doesnt help as much as running for real. is this true?
thnxx

Hey girl, anything that gets your heart racing is good. That said, running outside may make it pound a little faster because of the different terrain. I'm an outdoors runner myself so I'm totes biased, but believe me when I say any running is better than no running. Try to do a mix and see what you think.

Hey! I have been wondering what some of the best ab excersizes are. I do crunches but I really want to burn off my belly in no time at all! I have practicley zero time! Is there anything I can do without a gym or crazy machines!! Thanks!

Hey babe,

Try adding some variations to your crunches, like lemon squeezers (where you hold both of your legs up, bent at the knee, and lift your left elbow to your right knee while you push your left leg out straight then switch and do the same for the opposite side) or cross overs (similar to lemon squeezers but instead of moving your legs you rest your left ankle on your right knee and touch your right elbow to your left knee and then repeat the reps on the other side). These work more areas of your abs than a regular crunch. It will still take time but this might help speed things up a bit.

Hi i have been thinking about going vegetarian but the problem is most of what my mother makes for dinner and most of what i eat is meat and i'm 11 so my mom will probably flip out anyway what do i do? i want 2 b healthy so can i b healthy with out being a vegetarian?

Hey babe,

You can definitely be healthy without being a vegetarian, but if you're really serious about it you should talk to your mom and see if she's willing to let you try. When you talk to her, make sure you have all the info so she'll know that you're serious and you understand how to be vegetarian and still get the right nutrients for your body. To be healthy without being vegetarian, just make sure you eat plenty of fruits and veggies. Fish is also really healthy for you. Just try to cut back a little bit on fatty snacks and carbs like potatoes, pasta and rice. You don't have to cut them out all together - in fact, you need some of them for a healthy diet! - but just avoid eating too much of them.

As you know, it's halloween today (hope you have a great day!!!)
I started the healthy you program lyke 2 weeks ago, and i KNOW i'm just gonna crash tonight and eat a bunch of candy!!! i've had some ALL week. But, to offset the candy, i want to stay really active today. It's kinda chilly outside, but what can i do that burns lots of calories??

Hey babe! Remember, you can eat anything you want in moderation! Set aside two pieces of candy for tonight, and you won't have to worry about trying to burn them off.  It's more healthy to enjoy all the candy over a long period of time, and exercising in moderation (like jogging for 20-45 minutes), rather than trying to exercise for hours and hours. Have fun! Enjoy halloween!

How can I get rid of an upset stomach without medicine? My mom said 7up works, but I'm not really a soda person. Any other ideas?

You could try distracting yourself with a funny movie.  Other than distractions, I usually take Tums or drink Coca Cola.  I know you're not a soda person, but even just a couple sips could help!

photographynut2008 on 10/31/2009 9:39:36 AM

My friend and I made these for a picnic...they were delish! They're suuuper easy to make and everyone loved them! Deff try this!

kaipinkee on 6/12/2009 11:09:40 PM

here's a healthy, quick recipe i came up with:

BITE-SIZED CHICKEN/SPINACH SNACKERS!
-10 Kellogg’s All-Bran Multigrain Crackers or other multigrain/whole wheat crackers
-10 leaves of cold baby spinach
-Chicken salad (as much or as little as you want)

Spread chicken salad on every cracker, then top with 1 leaf of baby spinach each, and you’ve got yourself an instant, bite-sized healthy snack… add milk and fruit and you have a meal!

hockeygirl on 2/18/2008 4:23:51 PM
