BRING IT ON

Power-lifting. High-flying gymnastics. Through-the-roof jumps. Cheerleading is the sport that’s making scads of you switch from dance, gymnastics and track (to name a few) to shouting it out full-time. When we heard how many GL readers were rah-rah-rah for cheerleading, we knew we had to provide an all-out guide to doin’ it right. Here are tons of tips for making the team, upping your skills and getting along with the squad.

By Katie Abbondanza

STEP UP YOUR SKILLS
There are a couple of months left before summer camp and eons before football season kicks off. So now’s the time to start your training. Keep on reading for some cheer-tastic tips. Your coach is definitely gonna notice your over-the-top improvements!

IMPROVE YOUR OUTLOOK

Whether you’re a rookie or the team captain, put last year behind you. Take time to get to know this year’s squad—there might be lotsa fresh faces—and to practice some new skills—the latest routines, cheers and chants. “Be open to change,” says Misty Hodges, University of Louisville’s all-girls cheerleading coach. “It takes time to learn the ropes.”

SHOW OFF BETTER FACIALS

Cheering is all about getting the crowd pumped, whether you’re rooting on your school’s basketball team or competing in regionals. So, um, you’ve got to look like you’re having a blast. But between all the mental gymnastics (5, 6, 7, 8…where the heck am I supposed to be now?) and the super-physical stunting, it can be tough to look like you’re genuinely stoked. So rehearse your game face in the mirror before brushing your teeth. Your smile will be bigger, and you’ll perfect that ’tude-filled head toss. Wink!

GET HIGHER JUMPS

“Flexibility will allow one to improve the height of her jumps,” Coach Hodges clues us in. Make some time in your schedule for a stretch sesh. Feeling crunched for time? We won’t tell anyone if you limber up in front of the tube. When asked how she gets her jumps sky-high, Samantha, 14, whose rec squad won major competitions last year, says, “I stretch every day to stay flexible, which really helps. Leg lifts help, too.”

MAKE YOUR MOTIONS KNIFE-SHARP

If your coach has told ya once, she’s hollered it 100 times: Keep those arms rigid! It’s time to grab a pair of free weights for curls, or drop and do some push-ups. The more toned your arms are, the easier it’ll be to make those high V’s sharp. Make it a point to really practice them—don’t just mock the motions when you’re rehearsing a cheer. Going full-out will help you be more prepared come competition time.

ROLL WITH IT

If you really want to impress the masses, kick your tumbling skills up a few notches. Your round-off might have cut it in the past, but now the team is attempting to stick back handsprings. “Always learn the proper technique before moving on to more difficult skills,” Coach Hodges reminds us.

Adds Kate, 18, who has been cheerleading since she was just 7 and is now a squad trainer, “During the summer, I practice my tumbling on the trampoline, which helps a lot for when the season starts up again.” No more throwing those tucks…and hoping to land safely, especially on the hard floors of the gymnasium. So let’s hear it out loud: Three cheers for soft landings!

Um, Coach?
Have about a million questions before you face the judges? We’ve got answers. University of Maryland’s cheerleading coach Jarnell Bonds tells you how to ace your audition.

I’ve never cheered before. How can I prepare for tryouts?

All squads are different, so you’ve gotta go right to the source. “Communicate with the coach and current team members about what the team is looking for. Focus your prep based on their feedback,” Coach Bonds tells us. That way, you’ll know whether you should double up on dance or make the most of your motions. E-mail your coach to ask if you can watch a practice or two.

What will make me stand out from the crowd?

“I always prefer the athlete who shows the strongest desire to join the team. They’re the ones who’ll work the hardest,” says Coach Bonds.

I can’t really tumble. Do I still have a shot?

“Strong tumbling is essential,” Coach admits, “but no more important than stunting and showmanship. All-star teams value these categories, as well. Many times, high school squads don’t have as big a focus on their score sheet for tumbling.” Show the coach what you can do—safely!

What should I wear?

“Wear a practice uniform that mimics something you have seen current team members in—look like you are already part of the team. This helps the coach picture you as a future team member,” Coach Bonds informs us.

I haven’t worked out in a while. How can I condition?

Coach Bonds recommends push-ups for core strength, as well as lunges and squats to give ya a good base for stunting. Flyers should work on core muscles (think crunches!) for stability in liberties and scorpions. Don’t forget to do cardio three to four times a week so you can get through a 3-minute routine (it’s waaay longer than it sounds!).

Be the girl who makes the cheerleading squad!
The competition looks fierce? Don’t hide behind your pom-poms. Real cheerleaders spill their tryout secrets.…

GET A STUNT PARTNER

“I got the guts to try out for cheerleading through my friend Kayti. She was cheering and really enjoyed it. Next thing I knew I was trying out for the team. I was nervous because I had never cheered in my life. Tumbling classes helped me out a lot. Give it your all, and leave them with a lasting impression.”
—Hannah, 18

BE ENERGETIC

“Smile and show off your personality as much as your cheering ability. I followed this advice and made the squad. When we had tryouts, I was always my bubbly, friendly self. I also put all my energy into cheers and stunts, and I kept smiling through it all. Now, I’m a smiley, enthusiastic, spunky cheerleader!”
—Sophia, 12

STAY POSITIVE

“One thing my coach said stuck out to her at tryouts was my attitude. Being able to twist and flip is important, but those things can be taught. I had a very positive attitude, and that helped. And be honest about your weaknesses. Coaches are looking for girls who are confident, cheerful and full of energy!”
—Alyssa, 14

Be A Top Gun Teammate
Being a cheerleader is a year-round commitment, even if you only cheer for one season. Between camp, homecoming, fundraisers, pep rallies and competitions, you’ll be logging major hours with the team. Here’s how to be a total squad all-star!

RAISE YOUR VOICE

Spending time together outside the gym is key for squad bonding. Have the girls over for a cheer film fest, or suggest everyone claps it up for the softball girls. It may be a li’l tough to break the ice at first, but the team’ll follow your lead. Next time, Ashley may step up and invite everyone to her pool. For now, be cool being the girl who brings everyone (not just squad faves) together.

ROLL CALL

The squad is stoked—matching duffels arrived just in time for camp. Now, um, which is yours? Break out the poster board, markers and stickers to make cute name tags for the bags. Laminating paper from the craft store will make them extra sturdy. Punch a hole, thread some string through, and they’re ready to roll.

IT’S A CHEER EMERGENCY!

So you can’t heal a twisted ankle. But you can be prepped for any other mini-disaster teammates might face. Your girl’s cool new cropped ’do won’t stay up? No prob. You have bobby pins and plenty of hairspray. Keep a Cheer 911 kit in your bag. Stuff it with tampons, glitter, hair elastics, deodorant and extra socks. Toss in some energy-boosting trail mix, too! You’ll def be the go-to girl.

Im 11 and I just went to open gym at our local gymnastics place and I loved it! The thing is that i have always wanted to join, and my mom finally said yes! But, now she is trying to convince me not to! I REALLY WANT TO! how should I convince her??????

Hey girlie,

Just tell her you really want to try this because you want a new activity that will keep you excited, athletically active, and having fun. You want to meet new people, you want to challenge yourself, and you think this could really be the way to do it. Tell her you want her on board though to support you - and just let her know how much it would mean to you. As long as you're honest about why you want to try it out, it's possible to win her over!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD Okay, so i am doing cheering for my first year ever starting this summer (im 12) and I want to actually be able to do the routines. I play basketball and soccer, so flexability has never been a big thing for me. Will streching everyday make me more flexiable. Also, I have no upperbody strength, what should I do? Thanks

Hey girly! I'd try yoga! That's supposed to make you more flexible Smile

Mod I have wanted to be a cheerleader I'm 13 now. Anyway, I just quit karate and was looking for something else to do, and I was talking to a girl from my art class and she does cheerleading, and I thought it might be fun! From karate, I got really good stomach muscles, pretty strong, very focused, developed sharp movements and good memory from having to remember my forms. Do you think I should try cheer? I can't do flips and am not very good at cartwheels, but I'm willing to learn. One other problem, my mum thinks that all cheerleaders are stuck-up snobs. How do I convince her that cheer is a fun thing to do and will be a good social thing for me (caz I'm home schooled and she keeps stressing that I don't socialize enough)? Thanks, Kayla

Hey Kayla, you can tell her just that, cheerleading will def. help you socialize findout if your cheer squad does charity events and if they are active in the community. If so make sure you tell your mom that fact.

OMG! if you all don't think cheer is a sport, u try it! and a lot of cheer squads do dance routines with cheer and gymnastics incorporated and ur tellin me that isn't a sport! Don't knock it till you've tried it! Dance is a sport, I did a few years of dance, but so is gymnastics and cheer. cheer is energetic gymnastics that gets people excited for the team. oh yea, take that! If u still don't agree, come comment on my profile.

pgicy3, have you ever cheered before? You may not work as hard as cheerleaders! And it really doesn't matter how hard you work for a sport, people play sports because they like doing them. Yeah obviously not all girls are quitting their sports to cheer but some are, and the article was saying that becuase cheering IS popular. Maybe dancers will get credit soon! And again like I said it really doesn't matter how hard you work in a sport as long as you're doing something you enjoy!!

I HATE CHEERLEADING!!! y does everyone fuss about how hard THEY work? I figure skate and we work TEN TIMES HARDER! it takes seven years just to get to preliminary (the third level of nine)for some girls. cheerleading is yea, sometimes hard but people are NOT quitting their sports to do whatever cheerleading is. when do dansers ever get credit either? they work HARDER and arent as popular. i wish the world would stop putting them on a pedistol.

ok ive been cheering for 4 years and made the national school team (yay) so i kinda no wut im talking about if u dont believe me.

this artical is very true, but they are more refuring to the middle school teams, which ANYBODY can get on if they smile and they hav good jumpsSmile

but if u r looking to get on an allstar or national high school team( check if they go to states and nationals other wise non of this matters)the only thing u need to do is hit the gym
if u are tall, work ont the bench press, u will most likely be a base or back, but if u are slim and shorter work on restraint and double turns in the air(most likely required skill) also for any shape and size, no matter how awful u are, it will really help to have at least a standing backhandpring or round off back tuck, so take a gymnastics class or two

i hope this helps the older cheerleaders who are going to compete

hey for all u girls who have never cheered before here is some advice for a 7 year vetrin. well this year will be my second year of going out for my schools team. i hope i make it. ok here are some tips and advice
1. always make your moves sharp!!!!! pretend ur hitting a wall.
2. always smile. even if you have no clue what the heck ur doing your choches will admire you sprit. as long as u look confident you'll be confident
3. SMILE!!!! i suggest u practice in the mirror, show those perly whites all the time. trust me when you have been cheering as long as i have it is a habbit.
4. if ur tall then u will prolly be a back
5. median hight girls are mostly fronts and bases. if ur a base i suggest u work on ur upper body strenghth. holding even a half for more than a minuet kills, trust me!!!!!!
6.smaller girls are the flyers, if u have never cheered and ur one of those really skinny girls don't be afraid to be a flyer!!!!!!ur missing out trust me and work on ur abs. landing hurts, bad!u have to keep ur feet up arms around ur bases the whole shabang.
7. if ur a little chunkyer don't worry, i know i feel for ya. i'm am def not the skinny little flyer!!!!!!
8. as long as ur coaches see that u can improve it doesn't matter if ur perfect at try-outs
9.tumbling helps-even if ur not the best cheerleader if u can tumble that really doesn't matter. to tell ya the truth most squads look for the girls who can tumble
10. remember to SMILE!!!! if i haven't said that already

sjhcheerleader, I agree completely. While in most movies, TV shows, and books, cheerleaders are the popular bratty girls, not all cheerleaders are like that. I am my homeroom representative and have gotten all A's since kindergarten (seriously, no lie) AND I'm a cheerleader!

pinkmagic366, TRUST me, join cheer! You'll have a GREAT time and I'm sure you'll make tons of new friends who share your interest in cheer! (that doesn't mean you should let your other friends go, though) I know it would be a lot more fun if they joined with you, but it's also really fun meeting new people and doing something you're interested in. And getting to spend time with people besides your best buds will be great, too! And who knows, maybe you'll convince your pals cheering isn't that bad and they'll support you more! As for getting fit for tryouts, start stretching and exercising everyday. Start with just a little bit, and add more each day. You don't want to work your body too hard! I hope that helped!
Hugs,
Coco_Cutie

pinkmagic366,
don't let your friends ruin your cheerleading experience. i understand that you probably feel a bit uneasy trying out and feeling alone, but if you make the squad you also make a ton of new friends. don't let what your friends think about cheerleaders stop you, because despite the stereotype of cheerleading, just because you are one doesn't mean you are a total stuck up brat. you can make the best of it and prove everyone wrong. as for the not being in shape thing, i know how you feel. last year was my first time trying out, and i was nowhere near being in shape. i started running a couple weeks before tryouts, and i also did a lot of stretching. but the trick is to just smile big and act like you are confident and having a blast, that's the way to catch the judges attention. so i hope you go for it! good luck!

ok so i really wanna try out for the team next year...but first of all my friends dont wanna do it and i dont wanna do it alone. second they all think cheerleading is for like spoiled girly girls who always date the jock...that kinda thing. third...if i do get beyond all the friend stuff im not exactly in the best of shape
what should i do?

You should start by running and streghtening your stamina.  You could also do push-ups and sit ups as well as lunges.I think you should try out regardless if your friends try out for you.  If you want to try out and you want to cheer, it's your choice and it shouldn't really matter what other people think about it. =)

I would just like to say to everyone who has posted mean comments about cheerleaders, why do you have to be so stereotypical? Yes, i do realize that a lot of cheerleaders are very rude and think that they are better than everyone, but that doesn't mean that we are all that way. And also, why do you have to act like cheerleading is just a waste of time? Just because it isn't something you are interested in, doesn't mean that it is a complete waste of time. I just think that you should stop being so hateful and you should focus on your own interests and hobbies, and stop bashing other peoples. That is all i have to say.

Alikizam: I agree w\ coco_cutie, u have 2 go through hours of practice, when in cheering!!! U have 2 be loud, full of spirit, strong and u have 2 dedicate ur life 2 cheering!!! In my opinion cheering is more fun, cuz its a team effort. In gymnastics ur just out there showin off ur bod like a plastic BARBIE DOLL!!! Most gymnast think their better than every1 just cuz they can do a back-handspring!!!

OMG I LOOOOVE cheerleading!! <3 I did elem cheer last year (it was one of the senior's senior project) but I'm in 6th this year and apparently that still counts as elem and they couldn't find us an elem cheer coach so i didn't cheer this year. Cry I'm going to starting this summer tho. I cant' wait cuz I love cheering!

Alikizam, not everyone feels that way!! Gymnastics is really cool and all but cheering is MY personal fave my far. I don't do it because I want to look pretty and do gymnastics without all the extra work; I do it because I love it and it's fun. It could be harder than cheering in some ways, but maybe it's not in others. Trust me, stunting is a lot harder than it looks. Cheerleading is definitely NOT a waste of time for me. And for some girls, the "smiley peppy act" isn't an act! It isn't for me, at least. I have tons of school spirit!

Sorry if that seemed rude I was just stating my opinion.

i am going to be in marching band which is in the morning next year, but I am a dancer, i take tap jazz and ballet. I want to be a competitve dancer, but that takes up alot of time, and my mom wont let me. then i think maybe i should do cheer, but that would be very stressful too, i would have to go to 2 football games a week, one after another. But i want to be an artist or fashion designer, si then i think i should be focussing on that stuff...what should i do
dance, band, cheer, art, sewing, recreational cheer and tumbling, recreational cheer and band, jazz dance, band, tumbling and cheer, art and sewing and band and dance or what?

Personally, I think cheerleading is for girls who want to look pretty and be able to do gymnastics really well, but without all the extra work. I used to be a gymnast, and let me tell you, it is alot harder than cheerleading. In gymnastics you have to condition for hours on end, be highly flexible, AND be able to do tumbling on a high beam. Not to mention having to do twirls around a bar, AND run into jumps over a vault. You tell me, which sport is more worth your while? I definitely think cheerleading is a waste of time, I mean really, I don't even know a person who actually likes all that "smiley peppy act" that cheerleaders put on. Please blog back about your opinions.

Nobody says that dancing isn't a sport, this article is to show people how to be a great cheerleader. and cheerleading is the hardest sport i've ever done in my entire life. u have to do crazy tumbling like fulls, and layouts, and then get thrown into the air. its not easy so next time you put down something u dont know much about, u should try it first. odds are ur just jealous anyway but whatevs.

Ok, so I love sports, but i don't see a point in cheer leading i mean if its like gymnastics thats cool cause they can do some pretty amazing things, but if thats what you like then cool but i also hate it when other people slam other peoples sport because thats not what they play. the football team for our grade made fun of our soccer team all season it was awful we indeed up coming in second in a championship they didn't get anything so i think you should think about how your seasons going before you slam someone else's sport plus the cheerleaders are showing a lot of support for there school and team

so my best friend does something realllllly samrt, she keeps a few tampons (notice the a few) in her athletic bag (at my school, the athletes don't bring backpacks, we bring like sports bags) in a smaller bag. her tampons have saved my butt soooo many times. its a really good idea. try it!

I'm on the competition team at my school and
We practice 4 to 5 days a week for 2 or 3 hours. & we we in national titles. & it is a team sport because we put peoples lives in our hands... 30 feet up in the air. soo you've gotta trust each other. Just my opinion.

cheerleading isn't as bring it on allout copetitive as GL makes it seem. being able to do a back handspring doesnt make you an extreme athelete. making sacrifices for your team because they need you makes you an extreme athelete. being a good sport makes you an extreme athelete. if you want ultra competitive allout energetic up out of your seats fun try competitive dance. GL should do an article on dance. not just ballet. competitive dance. Our dance teams do tap, jaz, clogging, ballet, modern ballet, lyrical, hiphop, theatrical, & productions. cheerleaders shouldnt get all the credit.

One girl on my team had knee surgery and wasn't supposed to dance for 6 week and she showed at the competition 2 weeks after the surgery. That is what makes her an extreme athelete. The fact that her team needed her and she was willing to make so huge a sacrifice because there is no I in TEAM. Cheerleaders arent the only ones who do a lot for what they love. Us dancers do as much if not more. "T-E-A-M!!!! The Elite Dance Force is movin' in!!!!!!!"

Try and get really fit bafore trying out cause trust me-after making the team they MAKE YOU WORK!But if you think you'd enjoy it,Why not?
