It seems the only way to be popular is to be someone else, but when I try to be someone else, that someone is usually rejected, too. I just don’t fit in with others in the right way.

Keep developing your strengths (academic, athletic, and personal) and join an after-school activity to meet new people. Then be yourself—your most outgoing self. Say hi to lots of kids. Ask questions like, “How was your weekend?” and listen to the answer. If someone says, “My weekend was fun—I went to my dad’s,” don’t say, “Mine was fun, too.” Ask what her dad is like. I'm going into grade 8 this year and i've decided that i want to try to be more outgoing. I am really happy with who i am and i get told im a nice positive person. But sometimes around newer people (even if they are my friends but not super close) i get shy and quiet. I really am a loud crazy person like my confident and not so shy BFF. I want to be able to show that side of me in front of those people. I try to tell myself to just got out on a limb take a risk but sometimes it fails. Do you have any suggestions on how i could improve that?




Hey girl, I think you just have to do it. I did the same thing in 8th grade and I found just pushing myself and making a challenge to talk to at least five new people a day really helped.

There's always this huge pressure to do things that are bad or mean because if you don't you won't be "cool" anymore. take it from a girl who knows: it's much better to be in the middle of the food chain. Having trouble making friends because of your "status"? Don't worry. Sign up for something that sounds fun or a after school activity you enjoy. Chances are that you'll meet a new BFF there. Ok well there's these really pretty girls at acting and they all have beautiful long black hair, and I have curly brown hair and I'm shorter than all of them. I guess you could call them "the popular girls" and I'm not one of them. I want to be but I guess I'm not "cool enough". Sometimes they can be very bossy and even to me and if I'm one of them they won't bother me. I do hang out with girls who are younger than me. I love them but I also want to hang out with the other girls! I don't know what to do! I want to still be friends with my old girls but I want to hang with the other girls! I've even put on more make-up to see if it would make me look prettier! I know that's not a good thing to do. I'm 13 and most of the other girls are 15 or 16. But there is another 13 year old and she's one of them! What do I do? I love my old girls too!

Hey girl, I'd a) take a deep breath and b) push yourself to get out of that shy shell. Join a sport or club and make a point to get to know/talk to everyone there once. Challenge yourself. I'd def suggest trying theater. It really helped me and my shy friends speak out ... literally.

Sometimes it helps to trick your mind into thinking that your crushes are your BGFs.  It's hard to convince yourself because you obviously like them a little bit differently, but just try to relax and keep asking yourself, "What would I say if my BGF was standing in front of me, not my crush?"  You would let the convo flow naturally, you would be calm and not anxious about saying the wrong thing, you'd be able to joke and talk about your likes/dislikes, you'd be able to ask questions...you get the idea!  Keep reminding yourself that your crushes are normal people, just like you and me and all of your other friends.  Treat them that way and it'll get easier, promise Smile

Join Chatter Boxes where girls chat all over give each other advice, share interests and things like that.

The club is divided into smaller sections such as "The Book Girls chat" or "The movie l♥vers" and things like that. The members of this club can make their own articles all over my or their profiles about what their club is about.

Hey girl, 1) being closer with your mom is as easy as designating one weekend as a mom/daughter bonding weekend where you spend the day together. Also be sure to give her little daily updates of what's going on in your life. 2) you really need to talk to an adult -- a guidance counselor, etc. -- about what's going on. It's not going to get better until you take action and talk to someone who's certified to help you. 3) Unfortunately I don't mod profiles or have that access. You'll just have to be patient. 4) First of all, you're not ugly. Second of all, you shouldn't wear clothing that's too exposing. I'd go for clothes from American Eagle, Delia*s, Forever 21 and Aeropostale.

Hey girly, it's hard for anyone to get over someone they had feelings for. But with a little time and determination you can forget him. One thing you should do is keep yourself busy. If you occupy your time with things you like to do, you won't have time to sit and think about him. In class, focus on taking notes and getting your work done. If you can move your seat to where you can't see him, so try to sit in front of him. It helps to get all your feelings about him out, so grab a journal and diary and write. Write down every thought you had and have about him. The faster you get your feelings about him out, the faster you can get over him. Hope this helps ya! Smile

Hey girl, I honestly can't tell you if you're overweight or not, that's something you need to talk to a doctor about. If you're really concerned you could talk to your doctor, but it sounds like you don't have anything to be worried about. Try to feel good about your body by doing things that make you feel great inside and out. You're going through lots of changes and you need to accept your body for what it is. I know this sounds corny, but beautiful body types really come in all shapes and sizes. The silent treatment isn't working here - she doesn't know why you're mad or what you're thinking, so you need to tell her.  Ask her to meet up sometime after school when you can focus on a conversation.  Then, explain all the reasons why you're upset.  Don't attack her - just tell her what is wrong and why you feel the way you do.  Then you can both talk about how to fix the problem.  But seriously - don't keep it all bottled up inside without letting her in on why you're upset!

Hey girl,

Try babysitting, it's fun and a great way to make money. Ask your parents if they have any friends or neighbors who have kids. And if you're still a little too young, ask someone to be a "mom's helper". Basically you would come over and babysit while the mom is there but has things to do around the house and can't keep an eye on her kids. See if you can pull your friend aside and talk to her about it. Just say, "We haven't hung out in a while, let's do something tonight or tomorrow." It'll show your effort and hopefully she'll feel the same way and wanna hang out. If she ditches you, sounds like she's not a true friend. Try expanding your friend base in bell choir, or maybe join an after-school club to meet more people and make more friends!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD!!!!! HELP!!!! I have been crushing on this guy, Mason. Well it's a long story, But I will cut to the chase. I am 12 and he is 14. It was a rumor, But got through to my mom, everyone was saying Mason is a player and he ain't. My parents have never met Mason. We have been texting all week. We have a friend, Reese. He used to go to our school, But he transfered. He still lives right down the road from me. Mason asked me yesterday if I was doing anything this weekend. I said no. He asked me if I wanted to come to Reese's house and hang out with him, Reese, and Ashley Rayn (Reeses girlfriend). I was SO EXCITED!!! I had been waiting and praying for him to ask me out since FOREVER!!! My mom said I had to ask my Dad. I asked him and he said no! ugh! I thought my heart was gonna break in two. Cry We are gonna have Adult supervision, too! And my Dad is really good friends with Reese's Parents! I am really depressed. I love Mason, with all my heart! He is sweet, funny, caring, cute, and THE prince charming. My mom doesn't like him cause he cursed ONCE in a text he sent me! ALL the people in my class curse and I do too sometimes and my mom knows it, She found a fault in Mason, so she hates him. She told my Dad and my dad just did what my mom said and told me i couldn't go. Mod! Smile hey modder. I need some fashion tips. I don't have a lot d clothes, so I almost am repetitive with what I wear. My mom hates shopping so we don't go look for clothes very often, and even if I find something cute, it's either too big or doesn't look good on me. I want to make what clothes I do have look fantabulous and not so drab (they are mostly jeans and solid colors). Can you give me some ideas? I don't want to stand out too much.

I'm sorry to hear about the sister drama.  First, it's probably best to approach her at a time when neither of you is mad or upset - that way, it's less likely to start a fight.  If you can, tell her that you would like to be able to share with her, but that you don't want her to take your stuff without asking.  Set up ground rules so that you both know what's expected when one of you wants to borrow something.  Good luck!

Ok, I've just come back from 3 months showing my horses in Florida, & my horses and i did really well. but while we were there, another girl from my barn got sick 2 weeks before the end and couldn't ride. so my trainers asked me to show her horses as well - and, when i showed them we did really great & placed in all our classes (much better than she did on them). since then, she's been so mean & is making my life impossible. she's not my bff, but we basically see each other every weekday & practically every weekend at horse shows so i have to at least be able to live with her - but i still want to be friends. please help...

It's always so confusing when people start acting completely different, seemingly for no reason.  Maybe she has a problem that she isn't sharing with you - did she hear some gossip (which was probably untrue) about you that she didn't like?  Did something you say hurt her feelings?  Try asking her what caused the shift and what made her want to hurt you guys.  Just talking about it could make a big difference.  And also make sure you tell your other friends that Kelsie isn't worth hurting - this is just a little rumor, NOT something to start a huge fight over!

Hey girl, its totally normal to be nervous. First of all, I would make sure that he knows how you feel about him. Maybe if he knows you like him, he'll be more likely to ask you out. If you want to ask him out, just go for it! The worst he can say is no, but don't be afraid of putting your feelings out there. A lot of things around our house have been revolving around me. Like I just had a formal dance on saturday so we have been spending a lot of time preparing for it like dress shopping and shoes,etc. So I guess my parents want a little "me" time, but i have a talent show and rehearsals coming up that i cannot miss. I feel its important to do this stuff because its part of my dream(famous actress and singer). But i feel selfish and misunderstood and I want my parents to know that I thank them and am VERY grateful. How do i show them my perspective, without making them feel as though I'm ungrateful?

I babysat for the first time last night for a family with two kids (one boy almost 2, and one girl around 3). Their kids are pretty hectic, and stuff... but at the end of the night they WAY overpaid me. Normally I wouldn't be complaining about this sorta thing- but I feel bad taking all that money.
When I met the fam last week, when they asked me how much I wanted to be paid per hour they suggested $10. Then they asked me how much people normally pay.... and I said between 5-10 dollars (I put the 10 in there cause I realllyy wanted to make a lotta money, but now I feel guilty) and they said "Alright, 10 an hour it is."
And last night I babysat for 3 and 1/2 hours, and got $45.
I'm not sure what I should do about this!

people soo get the wrong idea of popularity. i guess me and my friends could be considered popular, but we're not mean. (actually, if people really knew us, they would consider us 'nerds'!) 'populars' are a lot like normal people, if you would give them a chance. all they do to get to a higher level is 'dress good' or 'look pretty.' a lot of the time popular people are harmless, and are perfectly nice. give them a chance! just saying lol... =)

MOD: Ok, so I have a lot of new friends I made in middle school. But, I havent invited any of them to my house, or anything! I do have friends down the street I play with. Okay, so I got this letter today from Wayland Academy, a boarding school in Wisconsin. They said they want me to attend! One problem. My mom doesn't want to send me. I know the tuition is prety hefty, but there are scholarships available! I don't want to leave my friends and family, but this is a great opportunity for me to learn how to be independant, and a great academic opportunity too! It's been about 3 months since me and my first real boyfriend broke up. The oly reason we broke up was because he was talking to this other girl that liked him, and he knew she liked him. I felt like he cheated on me because he would text her and would take an EXTREMELY long time to answer my texts, then he would make an excuse like "I took a nap" or "my phone died". I knew that he was texting her because I got one of my friends to ask her if she was texting him and she said "yes".
After all of this happened he would kick balls at me in the gym. One day I got sick of it so i threw two basketballs at him and hard too. He was also harassing me by constantly calling me and leaving pointless messages. He did an endless amount of things to me. He's dating the girl he cheated on my with and now he's acting like he likes me again-the way he did before we hooked up.
He's making me feel terrible about myself, not to mention he has a picture of me with extremely short shorts on. What should I do?!?!?

please help!!! thank yous so much!! ok so i had a bf around october to december then he broke up with me and i wasn't all that sad but then i started liking him again and he asked me out like a week after we broke up. then we went out from december to february and i EXTREMELY liked him. then he broke up with me. and my close group of friends were with me all the way and said if he asks again to say no because they knew he would break up with me again and they hated to see me like that. so i promised them i would. i didn't wanna break up with him in the first place so i really liked him even after he broke up with me. then a month later he asked me out again and i said yes because i really liked him and when he broke up with me it felt like not only my heart was broken in two but both pieces had disappeared. so then we started going out and i told my bffs and they got really mad at me. then they started ignoring me. then on gmail they started attacking me and insulting me. i read all of the comments and replied "ok". then i started hanging otu with my old bff from 4th grade and she was totally udnerstanding! she let me hang out with her and now we are bffs again! then my bf found out and i asked him if he was gonna break up with me because him going out with me was causing people to not like him and he said no because he really likes me. he also asked me why they were mad when it wasn't even their desicion. i didn't know either. they said that i promised that i would say no (i did promise). but then i asked why they would care if i went out with him again because it has ntohign to do with them and they got really mad and avoided me even more. and now none of them will talk to me. im starting to think that they weren't really my friends and now i consider my bff from 4th grade my actual bff because she rarely gets mad at me and she understands and will sit there and listen to me even if its for an hour of me complaining. and now my ex-bffs have started to get everyone to hate me. and now almost nobody talks to me except my bff now and my bf. but my bf dusnt talk to me in school he only texts me usually. please help me! i don't know how to deal with this!!! im sorry if this is long but i REALLY need help! thank u so much! i really need advice. thanks once again!

Hey girl! Well, in my opinion, you shouldn't have to change who you are in order to be accepted by a certain group. You can always wear a little more makeup (just start with basics like eyeliner, then move onto a little more eyeshadow). Even if you don't have expensive clothes, you can still put together trendy outfits if you keep up with seasonal styles. Here's your chance to be creative! But at the same time, I don't think you should try to change yourself into somebody else ... your group of girls love ya for who you are!

Just talk about general topics - favorite movies (if you have seen any recently in theaters), how school is going, how his sports are going (and he will prob ask you 'bout yours), etc. You can't force a guy to ask you questions back, but it's more likely if you show interest first.

Hey girl! There are lots of 'dos you can try. Instead of straightening your hair, you can play up your natural waves by curling your hair a bit (it shouldn't take too long if your hair is already wavy!). You can leave it down or put it half-up. You can do a high ponytail, which will look cute with your layers. You could also change up your style by getting bangs. Hope that helps a little!

I started acting like my friend and soon a lot of guys started to like me. Truth is being popular is not so great. Now this year i am no longer friends with the girl from last year and i am now more aware of my self. My self esteem is so much higher, i have friends that i know really care about me and will always be there for me. dont try to be popular, just have a high self esteem, be confident in yourself, be happy with what you have and love your friends that you have. They are the most important things. They are going to be the ones always there for you, you DON'T want to turn your back on them. Oh and another tip is walk straight with your chin up. Hey girl! For makeup, I would use a lot of eyeliner (a la Captain Jack Sparrow) to go for more of a grungy look. Same with the hair - you could curl is slightly and make it look tousled, since that's the way pirates are supposed to look (unkept). Smile Hope that helps a little!

Every day I am going to do 25 sit ups 25 push ups 10 pull ups 20 sit ups 20 push ups 10 pulls up and so on counting by five. Three times a week I go to gymnastics all for 2 hours one day is only 1 1/2 hour though. This is good conditioning is what my coach said. Do you think I over work my self. (p.s. I have a VERY high matabelism)




Hey girl! If your coach says this is good conditioning ... then I guess it's okay. Just be careful not to overdo it. It sounds like a good workout to me, but if you're worried that you're pushing your body too far, ask your coach about it. They are experienced in their sports, and they know when you're overworking your body!

Hey girl! I've totally been in your shoes. Honestly, the best thing to do is to try to have a good attitude and just go. The funeral will not take all day, and if the rest of your fam is going, it's just one of those things you have to do. As for attire, the general rule is to dress as you are going to church: don't wear something super bright, fancy or flashy. It should be more on the conservative side with appropriate shoes (no flip flops). Dresses and skirts are fine (as long as they are not bright sundresses, dresses with celebratory prints or flashy dresses). Hope that helps and good luck!

No surprise but i like my best guy friend. He may know because he asked my friend if i liked him, not who i liked. Every once in a while he asks who i like but not all the time. Once he actually asked me if i wanted a boyfriend and he comes out of no where then leaves and my friend just said he wanted to find me. Hey girl! Aw, that's really tough to determine ... he could either be a really good, caring friend or he shares those feelings for you. He definitely cares for you as a close friend. Would you ever consider sharing your feelings for him? It would be hard to talk about, but I feel like that's the only way of finding out for sure. You could try to figure it out from some of his friends, but I think it gets more complicated (more drama) when you "ask thru friends." Hope that helps a little!

Hey girly! I totally understand, I used to feel the exact same way. But trust me, as you get older and more comfortable with yourself, then you will be alot more confident. Just be friendly, and play off of what the other person says. Remember, you need to exude confidence (even if you have to fake it). Speak up, and say what's on your mind. Smile and laugh. Conversation will flow easier if you are more relaxed.

MOD In elementary school I was really funny and outgoing. Last year in 6th grade, I was trying to be myself, but I was treated like I was weird and stupid. Hey chica, everyone goes through this stage at some point or another. And I'm so glad that you want to be true to yourself. You just need to find the right people to surround yourself with. Be friendly and try to strike up convos with girls, and even guys that look nice. Sometimes it takes a little while, but you'll eventually find the right group to hang with. If you act confident in yourself (even if you have to fake it), then other people will catch on and realize how cool you really are.

Ahhh, I gotcha now chica. Well, this is a tough one. It would probably be a case-by-case basis. I'd say definately not too short of a skirt. It has to cover you, and make you look respectable. Not shorter than to your fingertips (when you put your hands down on the side) for school. For shirts, not too too much cleavage. But it's difficult to judge unless you see the outfit, get me?

I'd probably agree with most of that. Although I'd say that skirts had to be at least fingertip length, which would probably be no more than 5 inches above the knee. But at the same time, I'd probably enforce a different dress code for school than I would for, say summer at home.

Hey girly, as for question 1:  It depends what of pain you have. If you have cramps, try taking a hot bubble bath, that always works for me! If it's pain "down there" then you might have an infection. Which isn't serious, but you really do need to at least see a school nurse to get it taken care of. Question 2: Forever21 is great! Adorable clothes at awesome prices! Question 3: Fruits are very very low in calories. And so yummy in summer! Jello is also very low in calories (if you get the sugar-free kind). Question 4: And yes, most definately, medicines and prescriptions can cause appetite changes!

Hey chica, some people do the grossest, and most ridiculous things to lose weight.  Can you say...grosssss! Actually, the tapeworm diet is banned in the United States. Anyway, from what I understand, you get an actual tapeworm and eat it, or swallow it. The tapeworm absorbs all of your bodies calories, and nutrients. It's been proven to be very dangerous though.

Hey girly! I know it sounds gross, but it's totally normal, trust me. Lots of girls have this prob. If you have blonde hair, then no one will notice, I'm sure. However, if it's dark and you really want to get rid of it, then I'd suggest waxing or shaving, whichever you feel more comfortable doing. Your mom can help you find a good waxing kit (Sally Hanson has some great affordable ones!) at the store. i have a field trip coming up in May (near the end)
its a sleepover at a camp...with about 6 girls in a cabin... some from other classes i had had. And some that r in my class.I was wondering how do I keep my period hidden if some activities r in cluding rock climbing (maybe swimming counts on weather) And i am soo not comfort able wearing a tampon (ive tried) rope climbing hiking canoeing
And... 1 last question i haven't gotten my period at all this month i started around november is this normal???

Hey girl, that is tough. I would suggest trying tampons because they are more convenient. Otherwise I guess just bring lots of pads in your backpack or purse so you can be ready for anything.

Hey girl, I am sorry but I don't really know about the first one, aside from seeing a doctor. For the second one, I am not sure what you consider hot but I like shopping at Forever 21, American Eagle, Aerie, and Delias. As for the third, celery is pretty low cal, I think. Not sure what else, don't cut out too many calories! and lastly I have heard that those medications can affect your weight but I don't know how for sure. You could also ask a doctor about that.

Why would you want to be "popular?" Notice the quotes on "popular". At my school, no one likes the "popular" people. They're not indivduals, they all purposly dress, look and act a like. They have no other friends besides each other because they're so cliquey. From the outside, "popular" may look like it's the cool thing to be, but that's the kind of trick they're trying to pull. It's all a mask, they're insecure and no one likes them. Sorry, but it's true. Find someone who loves the person that you are. Someone that appreciates you being different. You'll be much happier. Okay I'm in the middle of a tough situation. The first problem is that I'm not allowed to date, keep in mind that I am 15 and a freshman in high school. Knowing this should help you better understand my situation...
I have this guy friend (call him Lance). Lance and I have been friends since halloween 2009. We had a thing from October to December. Then he broke it off, and within a week he had girlfriend.. This made me want him more so I continued to flirt and soon enough I had him head over heels. He broke up with his girlfriend and we instantly had a thing again, but we didn't date just like the first time. We were sooo obsessed with eachother and talked (not in person) and texted a lot. (The weird thing is: we never hung out and only talked in person for, like two point five seconds. We basically had a Cyber-relationship.) Our "thing" lasted through half of January until March. In march, I broke things off because I started flirting with guys a lot and had a transformation from shy, akward girl to flirty, and still somwhat quiet. It turns out, the night I told him I didn't like him anymore he had planned on asking me out...
This new guy (Jake we"ll call him). I met jake when I was walking around my friends neighborhood really late at night. Jake and I had a connection, and ended the night with a hug (not that big of a deal). I still like him A LOT, but the problem with him is he made it clear on the first day that he wanted to have sex with me. Do you think that he just wants my body?

 

Hey girl, I can't say for sure but in my opinion if the first time a guy talks to you he brings that up, that may be all that he is interested in. I would watch out for that because you don't want to be pressured into something you are not comfortable doing, or get hurt.

All you have to do is find something you like and TRY it! Like me, I like acting, soccer, and volleyball so I joined a class and team, and made lots of friends doing those activities. If you try to be popular you will probably be UNPOPULAR.
You never know what you could get into if you try to be popular, like if people might say "if you want to be cool then you need to smoke weed,"would you do that, I wouldn't. Besides there is lots of different

It's not worth it to be popular, trust me, i've tried. What i've figured out is that you shouldn't waste your time trying to impress the popular crowd...cuz really they're not worth it. They're just regualr everyday people and usually if they're the mean stuck up popular type people are only nice to their FACE. Which really sucks for them. In the begining of my school year I tried so hard to be coll but when I saw my grades I knew I was a geek. I wanted to have friends so a few days later i started hangging out with one of my friends group and now I am dateing my friends friend and he is in cooking club with me so not being cool has it's ups and downs.

Being popular has different meanings... people might think your popular if you hang-out whith certain people and canvince you to smoke or do drugs so you can be "cool". But true friends think of you as popular if your fun to be around and admire you for you. Stay true to those friends.

I feel the same way sometimes, i think the best thing to do is to not try to be someone else. Let yourself go sometimes, don't be mean but be YOURSELF! What is "popular" to you? Someone who has lots of friends or is well liked is popular, and for who they are, not who they pretend to be. You can only be truely "popular" if you have friends who like you for who you are. Because the moment you let that false you slip, that popularity is gone, but true friends stick with you to the end.

Being "popular" is not really as fun as it seems. Truthfully, we're just the same as you, we have boy probs, friend probs, stress, homework, pressure, etc. In 5th and 6th grade, there were so many cliques and stuff, now there aren't as many (8th grade). We do the same stuff "unpopular" people do to, play with friends, laugh, cry, etc. Also i put those in "marks because "popular" is the label given to the "popular" clique. But really, popular means that you have lots of friends. I you want to be truly popular, be yourself and don't ditch your current friends because then you'll end up without them. You shouldn't want to be popular or try to change yourself to be popular.You should just accept yourself the way you are and if the "populars" don't accept you when you are yourself or trying to be someone else, it's because you're not acting like yourself.
