I Am So Lucky

By Anonymous

Her face stares out at me,
small, tired, pale.
The bed she lies in
supports her slight weight,
the yellowed sheets covering her.
This girl is dying of cancer.
I am here to bring her joy,
to make her smile,
to take her mind off
what is happening.
I introduce myself;
she merely stares.
I ask what she wants to do;
she nearly silently replies:
"Art."
I pull out the supplies;
we start drawing.
She shows me her picture;
it is of her dog that died
seemingly a lifetime ago.
It is lifelike:
I almost want to reach out
and hug the poor dog,
which had cancer also.
Next we read;
I have brought Three Hilarious Tales
in the hope it will make her smile.
It does.
We do the rest of the activities
one by one.
It is time to leave;
I hug the little girl,
say goodbye,
and am out the door.
Walking home,
I reflect on what I learned
with that poor girl.
I realize now more than ever
how lucky I've been.

The next day
when I come to visit,
the girl's parents
are in the lobby,
teary-eyed.
I ask what's wrong
and they begin sobbing again.
"I'll just go see her," I say,
still wondering why they're crying.
The girl's mother stops me,
telling me how the doctors had told her
that during the night the girl got worse.
Her mother and father
had rushed to the hospital
to say goodbye to their only daughter,
but they were too late.
The girl died before they got there.
Now her mother thanks me
for making her last day so happy.
I try to shake off the praise,
not knowing what I've done.
But the girl's mother persists,
insisting on it.

Walking home,
I reflect on what the story
of this one little girl
has taught me:
how lucky I really am.
I say a prayer for her
and her family.
Then, I shed a single tear
thinking of how her family
and I feel: sad.

I am so lucky to have known her,
that poor, sweet little girl.

it really makes me think how lucky we really are. and how many times i say the word i in one day. all thoses times we scream and cry for not getting what we want. people need to help others be grateful for wht we are giving this life is so priceless. just enjoy every second if the time we are giving here beacause it really is short and b thankful we have one more day here to share wit the people we love. so today tell everyone how much u really love them mend the silly arguments and mend broken friendships. because at the end of the day does it really matter who saiid wht? it matters who u really care about. stop being so selfish and dont just take time to think about these poor people do something to help them or the enviorment tht helps billions of people in the future and carry everyone close in ur heart even peple of diffrent relioginon and race carry them all close to your heart no matter if u know them or not they r just like u humans watching out for people u love. so get out and help the world be a more peacful easy place to live.

That was a very powerful poem! If it is not true it is sure darn belivable! I love it when people, especialy kids/teens help others! It is so weird, I sound like my teacher! But I love it when we get to help out! I went to a Relay 4 Life event & it was so cool & a lot of fun! They raised a lot of money for the National Cancer Socicity! It was so coll it had a band & a lot of other activities to help find a cure for cancer! I liked it even more because I like anything that helps people! I love to help out! It is just fun to me!

wow. that's really sad. i feel, after reading this poem, that you can't just doe, and that be the end of it. i feel not for the little girl, but the parents, even though they didn't feel real pain, they suffered more than the rest of us ever will... i don't feel lucky, but i feel like something has to be out there: the happy ending.

Posted by: writerchickwithfeelings on 4/26/2008 3:13:42 PM

Wow
I feel so hurt.
You leave with no smile.
No touch.
I feel sorry for you.
Your sister was great.
She was small and smiley,
happy and free.
I know how you feel,
a boy of many feelings.
The little girl who always had your heart, is dead.
I wish the best for you, my dear.
You need some time though, to reflect.
I love you boy, know it.
I'm here for you boy, embrace it.
By your side, I'll always be.
Even though your first girl is gone...
I will keep you safe.

Posted by: mm on 4/27/2008 11:13:11 AM

A little song
That doesn't last long
Brings peace and joy to out world
I see it
And you see it
So why can't we be it?
It is because we have no love
For the one and only
Earth

That is really sad.One of my friends died due to asma.It was really sad even though I hardly knew her but still I feel for her friends and mine. For her parents thinking of mine. All of this news is sad.Yet life still goes on.

A while ago I read this comment that said 'Life is only a dream of the dead.' Now I think of that and wonder 'All of our dreams are connected. Dream of the dead or a connection of a net?

heres a song/poemFrownitll sound better if nu know the tune)

Sky
I'm tired of being cramped in here
Yeah, stamped right in there.
I'm tired of waking up to the same tune
Looking out on a full moon.

But I wanna fly by
Right into the sky
I wanna know how to go high
Into the sky, Into the sky.

But I'm never
Going to leave forever
'Cuz this ain't good-bye
It's the beginning
Of my "Hi".

Yes, I wanna go right to the sky
And know that I'm not gonna cry
That is the sky
But for now
I'm just gonna standby.

Now, if you try
to defy
The way I am
You might think I'm so shy.
But I wanna fly
Right to the bay
Wrap my self in the warm sun's rays.

'Cuz I wanna fly
Into the sky
Or into the bay
Wherever I can sway
In a dream
My dream of self-esteem.

ok so i gotta work on the poem. some parts(like the end dont make sense but ill work on it!

That poem touches me. i have noexperience in that but i know i wood be really sad. its really nice of that girl to write about this, when most of us are writing about boys or friends. she wrote about something that was really emotional i guess. i just♥ poems!

Earth
Precious song from the heavens.
It is our gift, and our defeat.
We will take it, and destroy it.
Just as we have destryed so many things.
Greed is the power, while selflessness is small.
We will never win the election.
All we care about is ourselves.
We've got a day, a month, and year, a century.
Maybe all we have is a minute, to change.
To see.
To act, and be free.

I remember when I was little
I'd sit down on a stool
Looking like a fool,
I'd listen to you stories
None of them about glories.
And then when you were done
You would start to run
You said it took away the pain
Of all the saddness in your reign.
And I wanna help
You get through it.
I wanna help
Make it seem alright
Even when budgets are tight.
I don't see why you need to push me away
I'm not playing
I just wanna stay
That I wanna help.

Yeah, your stories made me sad
But ain't all bad
'Cuz I realize how happy I am.
And you might think I' lying
Just to make you better
But I know away
And today is the day
That you will be happy
Better
Overly content
I don't wanna see your face
If it ain't look like it's
In a joyed place.

Posted by: CutiePatutie24 on 4/26/2008 7:55:39 PM

thats a great thing you did
my friend died of cancer
and im sure if she was that girl
she would've appreciated it
more than you can imagine.
i wouldve done it myself
but i had never talked to her parents
and she wasnt allowed to have any visitors
that were minors
besides family.

i miss you katie
more than you'll ever know
but i like to think
you can see me
even though to me
you're invisible.
we miss you so much
but your spirit touched us all
even for that little while.
thank you.

Posted by: alxbbygrl94 on 4/26/2008 8:19:25 PM

it is so kool that you thought
of the little girl and how her parents feel.
it gets me thinking, what if you didnt go and see
her. and how everyone in the world now is only
thinking of them and not careing how lucky we
relly are.

Posted by: pcd pinkie on 4/26/2008 8:20:00 PM

Wow...that's REALLY cool. We should all do these things...
We really ARE lucky. We should quit taking advantage of what we have everyday and put some thought into what things others don't have that we don't even think about. Like...showers. Imagine living in the Holocaust! They would trick you saying that you'd get a shower to get nice and clean...but really gas came out and killed you within minutes! We're studying this in LA, and my teacher said that there would be nail lines on the walls from people engraving their nails through it to try to get out and stay alive. How sad is that? We should really help out more people.

Posted by: squeeners on 4/26/2008 9:08:52 PM

that is so sad!!! i hope it is not a true story because it is so sad!!! i would be bawling if that were me!!!

Posted by: hollyberrie on 4/28/2008 7:09:56 PM

wow...this reminds me of last year...one of my really good friends's little sister (she was a year younger than us) died from MS staff...all of my friends and i bawled for like even a month after she passed away...It definitely hit all of us at home and we saw just how lucky we were...but it was extremely weird because she was soo sick when she died and one of the last things she wrote in her journal from church said this... 'Jesus suffered so much for us...when we suffer it makes us just like Him.'

Posted by: midwayallstar1 on 4/30/2008 3:35:11 PM

I swear, this is what I teacher said to me once:
"Heather, you better start writing a speech, 'cause you're gonna' be Validictiorian (however you spell it!) when you're in eighth grade!" I was TOTALLY SHOCKED!!! LOL!!!

Lucky

We are lucky.
We can love so dear.
We are lucky
Just to be here.

We are lucky
That we can be strong.
We are lucky.
We live so long.

We can jump,
And we can play.
We can sit
In the sun all day.

We are lucky
To be able to live.
We are lucky.
