We know that tons of you GL gals out there are amazing gymnasts, but check this out: gymnastics has the same clinical amount of catastrophic injuries as ice hockey! The magazine The Week reported lotsa people don’t consider gymnastics as a sport, but rather an activity. Because of this, parents don’t realize the risk of injury when their kid is doin’ flips and vaulting. Most of the injuries occur when attempting tricks at home, or practicing with an ill-trained instructor. So gymnasts, be careful! Gymnastic injuries account for some of the highest numbers of injuries for kids between ages 6 and 17. How bad are these teens getting hurt, you ask? Anywhere from ankle sprains, to broken or dislocated arms, to serious spinal cord fractures. Ouch!By: Jaime Sunday

itsallgood on 5/12/2008 8:09:13 AM
I did gymnastics for like 3 years. But now i do ballet. Get this! Ballet dancers get injured just as much (if not more) then pro. football players! i did a report on this...
Abercrombie_Ballet_Beauty on 5/12/2008 8:18:16 AM
Gymnastics is a hardcore sport and alot of gymnasts have over use injuries especially for the elites. xoxoxo
CandE on 5/12/2008 9:31:40 AM
ughhhh! but i already knew that. I did gymnastics for a little while when i was 5 and then over the summer when i was 9 but i didn't ever get to do flips or stuff like that 'cause i didn't take it long enough. I reallllllllly wanna take it again though it's sooooooooo much fun!
Born2Ride on 5/12/2008 9:38:44 AM
i'm am cheerleader and people say its not a sport but it is!!! you have to work realy hard, and u get injued too!!!!!
cheer chick on 5/12/2008 10:05:41 AM
if dancing were any easier,it would be football! lol thats my new motto
twisterchic on 5/12/2008 10:14:51 AM
I don't do gymnastics anymore (I did for a while) and it is SOOOOOO a sport! Its the best sport you could do cuz it works EVERY muscle in your body and teaches you hand-eye coordination and confidence. UGH I get sooo annoyed when ppl say its not a sport cuz its the best one you can do!
prettybeachgal on 5/12/2008 11:38:35 AM
hey i am in cheerleading and gymnastics and people always say neither of those are sports!! well what the heck! its soo annoying and i am on competitive cheerleading at my school and people think we are either all stars or varsity but we are jr high! we are amazing! not to brag lol
tootsie-roll on 5/12/2008 12:21:58 PM
i HATE how ppl think of dancing as an activity rather than a sport! we can get hurt so much more than ppl running.dancers can be injured just as bad as football players but no one believes us. grr. but yeahh i could NEVER do gymnastics! omg i would break my arm(again) and fall on my head. ouchh!
carolinexoh101 on 5/12/2008 12:27:50 PM
the analogy that gymnastics has as many injuries as ice hockey is kind of insulting. i play ice hockey, and i know that its really dangerous, but that analogy makes ice hockey sound like a bad sport. and if people aren't considering gymnastics a sport, than why does it have as many injuries as contact a sport?!
cami-chic on 5/12/2008 12:29:16 PM
i do cheerleading and gymnatics i don't do beam or bars and i'm not a flyer i'm a base i just do floor and yeah i get ticked off when ppl say gymnastics and cheerleading arn't sports, they are!!!!!! they are really hard u have to be strong, and u have to have will power, plus you can get hurt by just moving your arm the wrong way. it's soooooooooooo annoying i love to cheer and i have to say i think i'm pretty good not to brag, but i was on the jv cheerleading squad for school when i was only in 7th grade we competed against teams that were just 9th and 10th grade, i think thats pretty good for a 12 year old doncha thing
dramageekforeva on 5/12/2008 12:35:21 PM
hey, i do cheerleading + gymnastics (i used to do gymnastics classes but now i use it in cheer) and i haven't gotten hurt once. i'm even a flyer and go up into extention level ( when to baser's arms are all the way above their heads and they can't see u ). i've dine this ever since i was like 9 - i'm 13 now. it is so stupid to say that gymnastics or cheerleading is a sport b/c they r. i competed in gymnastics + cheer - how is that not a spoort, u r competing for a prize (medales and trophes). anyway i love to cheer and gymnastics and - not 2 brag - but i m pretty good. i do backhandsprings, tucks, etc. + i fly in extention + on 1 leg. sorry i bragged but i luv both SPORTS -yes they r sports - A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! luv, bryn* who luvs alec - he's funny, smart (but not a geek) , and amazingly HOT!!! luv u!!!

Does anyone here like tennis?
Tennisgirl93 on 5/12/2008 2:07:39 PM
i do trampoline. i'm level 8, almost nine, but the harness is broken so i can't learn back tuck yet. i've been doing high-flying flips for nearly a year. i'm at the point where my coach said i can teach younger people on my backyard trampoline. (i teach my bro and my neighbor) i also teach myself floor and bar. i can do a lot on the beam, too. the worst i did to myself was a few bruises from landing wrong and trampoline burn from sliding. it's not that dangerous if you have responsible spotters.
~*future-superstar*~ on 5/12/2008 2:18:53 PM
I love gymnastics but i HATE my instructor. she is really annoying I dont know what to do? and gymnastics IS a sport!
Just try to shrug it off, you cant get a new coach until you move up a level. oxox JANA
penguinfan on 5/12/2008 3:25:07 PM
I take gymnastics classes, but I'm not a full-on gymnast... and I have this friend that does gymnastics. She hurts herself ALL THE TIME!! ♥
ChocataMochaca on 5/12/2008 3:28:32 PM
I'm the same as ChocataMochaca-- i've been taking classes since i was 6 but i quit team when i was little because it was too much. I would do it now except that i value my study/homework time=]
xgiirlsxrockx on 5/12/2008 3:40:15 PM
i don't know why people don't think of dance, gymnastics, etc as a sport. i take jazz and ballet and they take serious effort!
londongirl12 on 5/12/2008 4:49:57 PM
WOW. I didn't know it could be that bad! I am a dancer according to the username, and there are a lot of injuries in dancing too. I don't think there is that much though. In acro dance there can be.
im-a-dancer on 5/12/2008 4:53:09 PM
i used to do gymnastics and dance and i lovedddd it i was soo good at gymnastics but quit to play soccer but anywayss .. yeah gymnastics is totally dangerous and so is cheerleading, at a competition near where i live a girl was kicked in the stomach by her teamate while doing a flip and the impact was so hard that she died =[ i think thats soo horrirble and it definitely shows how dangerous those sports can be!
fall back into my life ♥ on 5/12/2008 4:58:25 PM
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE gymnastics!!! I did it for like 3 years but then we moved to this tiny town and the only gymnastics is only tumbling and a little tiny 6inch beam. and classes are spendy!! If i wanted to take a serious class, I'd have to go 1 1/2 hours one way once a week! and i guess I'm just not that devoted. So now I take dance four days a week. Ballet and jazz classes are such a workout!! The footballers on our school team make fun of me for being small and tell me dance isn't a sport. Well, me and one of my sorta-friends are planning the bestest prank ever on them. In the winter we usually have a Christmas assembly and the 'grant' winter wishes. Next winter, we are going to say: "I wish our football team could take our dance conditioning class" and we're going to get our up-for-anything tonsa fun dance teacher to condense our hour-and-a-half conditioning class and we are going to get down there w/the boys and do this conditioning class for a few minutes. We will finally get our revenge!! As we watch them struggle and do stuff wrong, we will make it look effortless and graceful. Wa-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!!!
pixieinthewind on 5/12/2008 5:14:54 PM

i love gymnastics, and im a cheerleader, but i hate coaches and trainers who arent professional. one time, my friend emily had just got her back tuck, and her teenage coach MADE her do it on the grass. well, she split her skull open, and was in a neck brace for a while. my other friend erin had just got her roundoff double back handspring, and the trainer once again, MADE her do a roundoff TRIPLE backhandspring!! she factured her back bone, but luckily she survived and she is getting better now!
redsoxchica4444 on 5/12/2008 6:28:10 PM
I certainly do not like gymnastics even thogh my 2 best friends do. I don't even know how to tumble! But that is because once[[don't try this AT ALL!]] my sister was trying to teach me so we went on my mom's king sized bed. I nearly broke my neck trying to tumble...not so smart![[i was little though!]] but i do enjoy other sports like volleyball and tennis and for the girls [[and guys]] who love gymnastics,[[including my 2 bff's]] try ur hardest and be carful....I know u wil be very good at it in a few years if you practice...CAREFULLY!"best wishes" ~carly [[carly4queen]]
carly_carly on 5/12/2008 6:44:08 PM
gymnastics is totally a sport. i have practice 4 1/2 hours a week plus open gym. the most i have hurt myself is rips on my hands. i am so lucky to have a strict coach cuz she makes sure you don't hurt yourself. i love it. i get to go to nationals in june
megalynn10 on 5/12/2008 7:04:06 PM
My sisters does gymnastics and she is amazing. I actually get mad at people for saying its not a sport and that its easy. It is totally not. Its so much fun seeing little girls do flips and go flying in the air. I tried and it didn't work out. But I do have to say its really dangerous half of my sisters team had broken or sprained ankles at one point.
CeCe62794 on 5/12/2008 8:14:51 PM
I figure skate and we get hurt alot. My friend broke her leg and was out of skating for four months. many people have cracked thier heads open too.
icepanda23 on 5/13/2008 3:17:00 AM
I don't do gymnastics, but it sounds really fun, i do tap, jazz, and ballet. Ballet is really hard, you use a lot of muscles, and your so so so tired after! Same with tap and jazz. And you do get a lot of injuries in dance, so you have to be careful! I HAVE A TAP CLASS TONIGHT! YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY!!!!

acutally, gymnasts get more injuries than ice hockey players. there are TONS of overuse injuries with super-competetive gymnasts. i have played ice hockey for 3 years and haven't gotten hurt once. ice hockey (girls') isn't as rowdy and bad as people think it is.
hockeyhottie93 on 5/13/2008 5:14:54 PM

SO TAKE DAT!!!! ;) DANCERS DO UR THANG!!!!!!!!!!!! gymnsts r good 2 but dancers coulld take em any day of the week
jinxi on 5/18/2008 4:22:13 PM
they are right! Gymnastics is dangerous! my bestest freind just like destroyed her knee doing a round off handsring layout! i have never hurt my self that bad! but i have seen really bad ingerys! so anyone who wants to become a gymnast, do what your coaches tell you, or else you could get really hurt! annnnnnnd just because a gymnast doesnt go to the hospital for an ingery, does not mean that they didnt get hurt. i broke my foot, sprained my ankle, and sprained my knee, and i didnt go to the hospital for any of them. soi think gymnasts get hurt alot more than hokey players! ps pixieinthewind a beam is only four inches wide, not six(but i wish it was)i do gymnastics like 14 hours a week
gymnast1127 on 5/22/2008 1:23:39 PM
