I swim a lot--and my hair reeks!

If your hair smells like bleach, blame the pool. Chlorine wreaks havoc on hair. The cortex (inner layer) of your hair is protected by the cuticle (outer layer). Further, a natural oily substance from the scalp, called sebum, shields the strands. Chlorine sucks sebum out of the hair, causing split ends and smelly strands. Wear a swim cap to keep water away from your tresses. Even better, put conditioner on your hair underneath the cap. Also, use special swimmers’ shampoo and conditioner (like UltraSwim) as soon as you get out of the pool, advises Dr. Donnica Moore, president of Soon, you’ll be swimming circles around scalp stench.
