How easy do you think it is to get your paws on a pack of cigarettes? According to The New York Times, that's the question researchers are asking to see how likely it is for a 6th grader to smoke when they get a li’l older. The study showed that kids that answer with an “OMG! It would be a breeze!” are tons more likely to pick up the unhealthy habit when they hit high school than those that thought it might be a little trickier to snag a cig. And if their besties are lighting up, they are tons more likely to start puffing away, too.Researchers interviewed 1,195 peeps in the 6th grade and then had follow-up interviews to see if anyone had become addicted after a few years had gone by. And here’s the real shocker: at the beginning of the research, 168 students said that they had already smoked at least one cigarette while they were 11-years-old or younger.Sure enough, those that thought getting a hold of the nicotine rolls were easy as pie were the ones that started smoking on a regular basis. And what made things even worse is that 1/3 of the kids that were interviewed knew of stores that would sell cigarettes to minors…which is totally illegal! But with all the risks that smoking brings (such as lung cancer, heart disease and attacks), it’s clear to see that being healthy is the way to go and making bad choices for your bod isn’t. my teacher always says.."if i ever see u when ur grown up and smoking i'll take that cigeratte out of ur mouth and glare at u, and u probably wont even recognize me." i think smoking is bad. so i also say..."if u wanna fill ur lungs with smoke..live in a chimney!" cuz lets face it! chimneys are full of smoke and santa is stuck inhaling it all! Wow! I know about the lung cancer, heart disease, and attacks. And that's why my mom and I have been trying to help my dad out. Once, when he said he quit, he went outside in the garage. I snuck out the door and ran to the garage door. And when i looked in, easy to believe, HE WAS SMOKING! How can I help my dad out?

168? That is a lot. I am NOT going to smoke because my grandpa did when he was 14 or 15. But thankfully, he quit. I am really proud of him. I mean im 10 1/2 and when i go to 6th grade, i promise not to smoke for the rest of my life.

I am going into seventh grade and thankfully, none of my classmates have ever come near a cigarrette. But who knows? I hope that none of my friends EVER start smoking, because there is nothing good about it! That's scary that 6th graders have started smoking already!

omg! that is really amazing! and sad. all of you kids i have a little story that will hopefully keep u from smoking when my mom was really young, like ten, she started to smoke, she got addicted and just this last year she developed lung cancer and died. it really hurt everyone that loved her, especially me. so please dont smoke!

I am 12 almost 13, never smoked, never thought about trying it, my friends don't smoke, and its considered weird at my school to smoke. I am proud, and I now realize how lucky I am to not be in an environment that doesn't pressure me to. For those who do: PUT IT OUT. SECOND HAND SMOKE IS TOXIC. i know alot of kids at mt school that smoke. i;m going into 8th grade and i'm 13. but i don't smoke .i don't go to their houses if i know they're gonna smoke. one i said i had asthma so they stoped smoking around me.

Little Kids, little 6th graders smoking! I am going into high school and one of my friends smokes and drinks and wants and hopefully didn't to do drugs! I really wish it was illegal but that would cause controversy and it wouldn't help it would actually be a dangerous law to pass! Little kids Smoking just shows what the United States has become!

hello12345- oh im really sorry to hear bout ur mother. were u close? well i know i wont smoke like ever! but guys i have a problem...i was lookin through my mom's purse (for mints! cuz im like a mint adict) and when i was litle i remembered she used to smoke. i found a cig in her purse! along with a few matches and some tabacco! my mom isnt my fave person but i mean i dont want her to go back to smoking! what should i do? P.S. she doesnt know that i know about it.

i hated health class in middle school cuz they told us about the HORRIBLE things that happen to smokers and they tell us that you die early and stuff. i know the teachers just dont want us to start, but i never would anyway. it just hurts cuz i have a couple loved ones that smoke and i would do anything to help them stop. i dont want them to leave.

i know tons of kids that smoke and im going into 7th grade! it is realy sad, they have been doing it a long time and they have tons of wrinkles and they breathe hard and they cough all the time! it is horrible and i will NEVER smoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think smoking is becoming a world wide effect on all kids. Unfortunetly I think we have all tried super hard to stop it and have had made some difference. My Grandpa started smokinng when he was 11 years old and didnt stop till he was 65, his last year. This only just happened two weeks ago and I have proved to myself that smoking is an option to control my life, but thats not the way I am leading my self to. Smmoking is bad and there are ways to prove that its a bad habit, yet no evidence of any good things in this terrible controlling way of life. I hope that who ever reads all of the comments posted on this page will either realize what smaoking is doing to you ormake a statement not to even try. Love maxyx3

i never understood smoking...and my 5th grade class was one of the only times 5th graders did NOT do D.A.R.E.! that was 4 years ago, and veeery few of my fellow classmates smoke cigarettes. thats not the problem...

Smoking is actually one of the most disgusting things ever. And it isn't fair to people that don't smoke becuase when people smoke around you, you have a risk of getting those diseases too. I have asthma, Which doesn't run in my family, because of the inconsiderate people who smoke in public places.

Im sooo sorry for your mom Right now im on vacation in europe and im seriosly choking when im going shopping because everyone smokes and its soo hard for me to breath!! I'm sorry for anyone who has someone in their family or even someone you know that smokes. It must be tough. All I have to say is, go the opposite direction of cigarettes and all that stuff. And if you're even thinking about trying it, ask yourself this: do i deserve what I'm putting myself through? Hopefully it's a no. Best of luck to all of you!

I am encouraging everyone big and clear : DO NOT SMOKE! I am only twelve and in seventh grade but our neighbor (he's eleven and in sixth) came to our house one day to play with my little brother with a cigarette in his hand. He said that he got it from his mom when she was done smoking and told her that he'd throw it away but instead starting smoking it. This is dangerous, and totally disgusting. Whenever I pass by someone who's smoking I always gag because it makes me feel sick.

Once my period was really heavy and I made sure to double up with a tampon and pad. Later that day at school, my crush walked up to me and asked me what was on the back of my pants.
