How do I know if my flow is normal?

It’s totally normal to have a rather light period one month and a heavier one the next. “The average menstrual flow tends to be four to five days of heavy flow,” says Ob/Gyn Dr. Lee Ellen Morrone of New York City, “but you should not be soaking through a pad every hour.”

As for clumping, that is blood clotting. Small clots are not unusual, especially in the morning due to blood sitting overnight in your body. However, if you pass a lot of clots, or find a severe change in terms of duration or heaviness, see your doctor to rule out any hormonal problems or abnormalities.

Hey babe! Blood clots are necessary in order to stop bleeding after a blood vessel is damaged. If we didn't have the ability to have our blood clot then people would bleed to death from minor cuts. Sometimes blood clots occur however, even if a person isn't injured. Then they can cause medical problems. It can become dangerous when they block blood flow through an artery or a vein.

You get cramps because the area in your body where your period happens is going through a big change and the bloating happens because you're retaining a lot of water so your body can keep hydrated. You get tired because it takes your body a lot of energy to have your period. We have tons of period info on our site where you can learn more. Hey girlie,

Your period doesn't exactly stop over night. Usually it gets lighter at night because you are resting and laying horizantally. So don't worry, it's normal to have your period at night too!

i have a really heavy flow and i always wear a super tampon on my heavy days. today the tampon leacked and it was a tampax pearl that is supposed to last for 8 hours (i only had it in for 7) at my school we have to swim unless we have a notefrom our parents and if we do have a note we have to do a make up class. i really dont want to swim but i dont know how to get out of pool without my new friends knowing i have my period.PLZE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

on a tampon box it usually has instructions and (ugh) a diagram but mostly its about practice but only when you have your period but once you get it you love them. your tampon once its in should never hurt you should barely be able to feel it. make sure its all the way in.hope this helped

Hey girlie! Periods usually last for about 5-7 days but there can be lots of variations. Especially when you're getting your period regularly!

Hey girl, everyone's period is different, so don't sweat the length of yours. Your mom is right: it's natural. Don't worry too much though. When girls start getting their period, those first couple months tend to have unusual cycles. You may have a super short period, for example, and then a long one. You may have one come early; you may have one come late. It's your body adjusting, so no worries. Just keep a stock of pads on you and you'll be fine, promise!

Sorry to hear about that. You might want to go to the doctor and tell him/her about what happens. Some girls get really nauseous and feel like they're going to throw up when they get their period. If you're actually throwing up, your stomach might just be extra sensitive, but you should definitely tell a doctor about whats goin' on.

I got my first period on wednesday last week, now it's sunday and when I woke up this morning, there was no blood. But I've heard that periods can stop and then come back, so I'm scared to take the pad off because I don't want to bleed through my pants! Hey girl, it's completely normal for your period to be irregular right now. It'll probably be irregular up to a year after you first start, but it'll become easier to predict as you go on. Wear a pad today and tonight, just to be careful. If you don't have it tomorrow morning, it's probably over and you can take it off.

Hey girl, I don't know if any research has linked periods to weirder dreams, but it's definitely possible anytime. Dreams occur during a stage of deep sleep called REM sleep, but scientists are still researching the exact causes of them. If you're interested in what the current theories are, I suggest researching them. You could learn a lot, and it's a way interesting subject. Sweet dreams regardless, girlie!

That's totally fine. Your period is going to be really irregular for the first few years and the flow during a single period isn't always consistent.

I wish this wouldnt happen and there was a way to stop it at times because it messes with my day, but is there a way not to think about boys and their bodies so much when I get near my period? I know it is normal for that to happen but at times the feelings are just really strong and I dont like it because I end up thinking about boys and doing things in a really weird way.

That's all pretty normal. A good way to help with cramps though is to use a heating pad or to do some light stretching or walking or taking some light pain killers.

Yes, it sounds like the beginning of your period. Wear a pantyliner until you no longer have discharge or light blood on it.
