Pads vs. Tampons

Should I wear a tampon every day to prevent accidents?

“No!” Our resident gynecologist nearly screams her one-word answer to this one. Getting your period can be confusing. But, thankfully, you only need to deal with pads and tampons during the days you actually have blood flow.

If you’re not bleeding, definitely skip the tampons. You’ll also eliminate the chance of picking up TSS. That should make you feel better. Just think of all the money we just saved you. (Tampons aren’t cheap.)

MOD MOD MOD MOD ! my period hasnt came yet but my underwear has been damp for days now. is this normal ? what can i do? i iknow i shouldnt wear a pad every day but idk !!!

It's def normal! Your period will come in the next few weeks or months. I'm sorry for the uncertainty but we've got Mother Nature to thank for that : P Wear a thin pantyliner just so you don't constantly have to change your undies and so you're not worried about it. Just try not to think about it til it happens. There's no use in worrying. Best, Miliana

*MOD* I got my first period today, so I don't know alot. Which is better for gym class: pads or tampons?

Tampons are best for physical activity! If it's uncomfortable a pad is okay for low-impact exercise!

MODDD! I do NOT have my period buttt.... I've had discharge for about two years now - less or more, and I've got hair, moodinesss and boobs. Recently though my discharge has been wayyyy more than usual. I've been wearing pantiliners but when I don't it goes through my underwearrr! Is that normal. Do you think I may get my period soon?

Hey girl! You might want to talk to your parents or a doctor about this. You can check out http://www.girlslife.com/hub/bod-squad.aspx

Ok I think myperiod is on the way yesterday i wiped not on my butt but down there and there was some light colored brown stuff I also felt really bad like i was gonna puke two days ago and fell asleep for two whole hours! IS my . on it's way????
PLEASE HELP!!!

Hey girl,

Yep, looks like Aunt Flo is on her way. No need to fret, though! Place a panti-liner in your underwear and you'll be fine. I know it can be worrisome but just keep some regular pads nearby or in your backpack when you're in school, just in case.

I'm playing field hockey, lacrosse, volleyball, and I'm doing dance so I've decided to try tampons since the bulky pads are very uncomfortable. The porb is IDK which brand and size of tampons to use. Any suggestions?

Hey girl, there's no way to know off the bat which size or brand is best for you, so my suggestion is to just experiment with different ones and choose the one that works best for you. For your heaviest flow days, you shouldn't need a size any bigger than a super as reference. As for brands, as long as you choose a reputable one, you should be fine. Ask your mom which brands she likes--she'll def know. For more info on all things periods, check out our Periods, Periods section at http://www.girlslife.com/hub/periods-period.aspx.

I'm going to try tampins FOR THE FIRST TIME! The prob is, I don't know which brand to use, and which size to use either!! I decided to try them because I'm doing dance, field hockey, and volleyball and it's hard with the bulky pads. But I'm really scared to use a tampon. IDK what to do. HELP!

Hey girl, the best way to figure out which size to use is to just try a tampon out. Most likely, you won't need any higher than a super size tampon for your heaviest flow, so feel free to experiment. As for brands, ask your mom which ones she likes. You really can't go wrong with a reputable one, so just give one a shot. For more info on Pads v. Tampons and periods, check out our Periods, Periods section at http://www.girlslife.com/hub/periods-period.aspx.

veemaire on 8/5/2009 11:39:10 PM

Why would anyone want to keep one in every day? Not only is it dangerous but it is also expensive if you are going to do that. And never should you keep it in for a long time because of the chance of TSS.

luckykel on 8/4/2009 8:59:14 PM

Where could you put a tampon so no one would see it because at my school every looks in everyones pencil cases and i think it would be to noticable in my pocket help!!

Hey babe,

You can keep it in your locker and just stop by on your way to the bathroom if you ever have to use it while you're at school.

If you're still irregular and you think your period might come soon, you can always wear a pantyliner. That's much safer and will still help prevent accidents.

hollywoodhottie16 on 7/23/2009 2:18:56 PM

Is it okay to wear a tampon at all times during your period? 'Cause usually a pad is okay, but yesterday i got a sudden "whoosh" and although my pad could have taken it, it's like the pad wasn't long enough and it was all over my jeans. In the middle of a 2 hour choir rehearsal with a conductor who won't let us use the washroom. Frown

Hey babes,

You can def wear a tampon for your whole period but you should def change it every time you use the restroom.  Try a multi pack with different sizes and wear liners as a backup.

Hey girl! Having irregular periods is normal for a lot of girls. It's very common. You have nothing to be scared of. Try to read the direction on the tampon box or maybe ask your mom for some pointers.

softball48 on 5/2/2009 11:28:55 PM

Omg it would be hard to get it in too because your flow help make the tampon slide in easier. So if you put it in when you don't have it, it may hurt! lol Comment on my profile!!! <3 DD

I have no where to hide my pad when I go to school. I used to put them in my pencil case, but then this guy found out that I put my gum in there, and I'm scared if I put my pad in there, he will open it then it will pop out... and he's in the class where I have my crush in! Also, I tried hiding it in my bra, but I looked too busty. Where's a good place to hide it without anyone finding out?

hey Girl, I would hide them in a back pocket of your jeans. That way they are hidden but within reach. xo Annemarie

the exact second you get your period and this is the first time you get one what do you do if you don't have ANYTHING or what if you are shopping wiht your mom or something and you feel something wet and go to the bathroom and discover that you are bleeding?

rachel751 on 4/11/2009 9:21:19 PM

You don't want to wear one everyday, that would be expensive and like they said it could be a problem with TSS. And not to mention it might make you sore down there from having something inside you 24/7.

Hey babes,

Your def not alone in this situation.  The next time your out ask if you can stop in somewhere for some products.  Tampax pearl is super easy to use,  so just let her know it would be easier since you're really active and you want to try them out.  SInce you're just starting out, check out the directions on the inside of the box for any questions you have on them.

Hey girl,

Anywhere from about 2-7 days. If you're concerned because yours is too long, too short, or too heavy, etc ask your mom to take you to the doc!

Tell your mom what the sitch is, and that you think you're ready to use tampons. Before you head out to the water park, practice putting 'em in a couple of times.

here's a tip to hiding pads or tampons:

If you have a pair of boots (Uggs, etc.)you can hide them in there and then take them out when your in the bathroom! No one will notice anything, and it can't fall out! (unless you take your boots off...so don't!)
thanks GL! awesome advice! (::::::

I have 2 period questions. First, is there any kind of pads I could use for sports because my mom doesn't want me to use tampons? Second, I started developing when I was ten and started getting discharge when I was ten too. So if I could make a good prediction when to get my period, is a good age to expect is 12? Just wondering!

Hey katiegirl24,
TSS stands for toxic shock sindrome, It is caused by leaving a tampon in too long and it is potencially deadly. The simptoms are, fever, vomoting and dizzyness.

Hope this helps
