The Damp Undies Dilemma

Six months to a year before their first period, girls start to produce vaginal discharge that makes underwear feel damp. This is how your body clears dead cells from the vagina to keep you free of infection. The fluid is usually thin and slightly sticky but can be thick and gooey. Color ranges from clear to off-white, says Dr. Mary Ann LoFrumento, a pediatrician in Morristown, N.J.

If your discharge develops a fishy smell, causes itching or burning, or looks dark, this is a sign of a vaginal infection so see a doc for a fast remedy.

Another totally different reason for the watery feeling could be urine drops from holding it too long. Never do that—not peeing leads to urinary tract infections. Now you have a great excuse for a hall pass!

well sometimes i like freak out (in my head of course!) because i think i got my period but is just discharge. this is really gross, but when you get your period, does it "feel" different than just discharge?

Hey girl, not really honestly. You really don't feel much if anything. Nonetheless, you should def wear a pantyliner -- that way your panties don't get stained when your period really does come.

Ok guys, I think I can answer many of your questions! I am 12, have not had my period, but have had discharge for 10 months, and my boobs started developing about 2 years ago. That most likely means I'll be starting my period within the next 6 months. But here are the answers to your commonly asked questions:

How do you know if you have discharge: basically you feel wet in your pants, but you know you didn't pee yourself. If it gets bad for me, i put in a pantiliner, but if you don't wanna do that then you can just live with it, because it's not that bad. The color is basically like offwhite, but when it dries its kinda yellowish. but if yours is pink red or brown, then you had your period.

False alarms: you can have a false alarm, where there is a little blodd, but it's not your period, that has happened to my friend but it's perfectly normal.

How to know if your period is coming soon (like in the next week): if youve got boobs, hair down there, and are acting grumpy have had discharge FOREVER and r having cramps, then you're about to get your period. Promise

How to know if your period is coming soon (like in the next 6 months to a year): if you've got boobs, hairs down therre, and have been getting discharge for about a year or more then expect your period fairly soon.

But don't expect your period right after your boobs start growing or right after you start getting discharge because you'll be disspointed.

Tips for dealing with discharge: It's so annoying,at first you'll probably be paranoid, and you'll use lots of liners and pads, but eventually you get used to it and you won't care anymore...also for me i started getting discharge about 3-4 months before i started getting signifigant hair down there

MODMODMOD! I have been having this "discharge" stuff for over a year and almost a year and a half. I used to find it in little amounts but just recently I went to the bathroom and there was a big wet spot in my underwear. Luckily I was at home. Should i put a tampon in? Or not? HELP PLASE!

Hey girl! If it is not your period then no. Just throw on a pantyliner to help combat the discharge.

Discharge is so annoying, I almost always have to wear a pantiliner, to avoid the 'wet panties' problem, but I guess it's just one of those things you have to live with.

Hey girl, sounds like you may get your period soon, but no one can say for sure excpet Mother Nature. As far as the rib cage thing measure it one more time. It should double up on either 30 inches or 28 inches. Whichever one you get that is what you are.

Hey girl! That sounds pretty normal. I would wait it out a week or so and see what happens or if there are any changes. If no changes and you're still super worried, head to the doc for a routine checkup!

Usually it's just discharge, girlie. I'm not an expert on bed-wetting, so talk to your parents and a doctor to help. And don't shave unless it's summer and you're going to the pool. I guess when it becomes noticeable, it's time to shave the bikini line. Best,

Hey girlie! This is a great question! Every girl's body is different. It's not something you can calculate. Just wait til yours body is ready! In the meantime, you could ask a trusted adult, or doctor about any other questions you might have.

In my opinion the damp undie dilemma can be confusing because I have noticed that I get that watery feeling around my period but I have also had that watery feeling down there while I have been kissing a guy I really like. Its kind of embarrassing when it happens but at least the guy doesnt know whats going on.

Does that happen with anyone else and do you feel embarrassed like I do?

one day before halloween i started having "the mud" discharge with blood.it was a very small amount and then the next day it was more blood and almost went through my underpant, then all off a sudden it becomes lighter until its completly back to being clear on the fifth day is this normal and will it happen each month or do u think its irregular please help THX SO MUCH.

Hey girl, that sounds like it's actually your period (the blood could be dried, thus that brown color). It's way important you mark the day you first got it and have pads on you around that time each month. Be prepared, girlie. When you start spotting or getting "mud discharge," wear a pantyliner at least so your panties stay nice 'n clean.

Hey babe, it sounds like your body is changing but there's really no way to tell if and when you're getting your period. You'll just have to wait it out and see! And no, if used properly tampons are painless!

Your undies being damp indicate discharge. Why do you need to go to the doc? Your doc already told you you'll get your period soon and so you prob will. Talk to your mom about it if youre unsure. Best,

i have discharge also...my mom says its normal but thanks for clearing up the air. that's a whole lot off my shoulders. and if any one gets it in school and needs to go to the nurse the code is :
"i need to use the nurse's bathroom"
or if ur nurse doesn't have a bathroom:
"i need to go to nurse for girl reasons"
yepp it's that simple and don't feel weird about saying that to a male teacher..he won't tell anyone and i personally think telling the teacher and being uncomfortable for a little bit is better than not saying anything and getting teased and being uncomfortable for a long time. i haven't got my period yet and i'm glad...for all u girls who got it young i feel bad for you...this is the kind of thing that sucks about being a girl.
