How to help a friend who may have an eating disorder

It can be scary when a friend develops an eating disorder. Here’s what you can do:

1. Learn as much as you can about eating disorders before confronting her.

2. Tell her you are concerned about her and suspect she might have an eating disorder. Offer specific observations like, "I heard you throwing up in a bathroom stall twice last week."

3. Suggest she be evaluated by an expert. It's doubtful she'll be receptive but important that you tell her.

4. Hand her a list of resources:
The Renfrew Center, www.renfrew.org
National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, www.anad.org
National Eating Disorders Association, www.edap.org
Academy for Eating Disorders, www.aedweb.org

5. If she gets angry and refuses to talk about it, don't push her.

6. Tell a professional (nurse, guidance counselor, coach, teacher) that you suspect your friend has an eating disorder.

7. Realize you've done what you can. You can't force help on someone who doesn't want it.

8. Also realize telling your friend you're worried, and that you love and support her, definitely matters!

MOD!
O I once caught my friend trying to do dieting, but I convinced her out of it! And guess what? She is only 70 pounds. No, I am not in 4th grade.

MOD MOD MOD!!! I have had repeated weight loss and gain, and it scares me. I weighed in every day for a week, and every single day my weight was different by up to 5 lbs.!!! I also always pay attention to calories, and all the girls in middle school attended a thing on eating disorders, and now my friends and I think I have anorexia. Frown

Hey girl, it's actually normal for your weight to go up and down a bit between days, just depending on when you weigh yourself, or even what you're wearing!  But if you feel like your eating habits have become unhealthy, or you are too worried about what you eat, I really encourage you to talk to an adult.  It's really great that you are thinking about your health, and reaching out for support (to a teacher, parent, or counselor) will help you make sure you are on track.  Take care of yourself, and remember that being healthy and happy - at any weight - is beautiful.  xoxo

I'm not an expert, but it sounds like you're OK! If you're worried about your weight, talk to the doctor at your next visit to see where you are in the weight range for your age/height group!
