FACTS ON ALCOHOLISM

Research shows children of alcoholics are about four times more likely to develop alcohol problems than others. But alcoholism isn't determined only by genes. Half of all children of alcoholics do not become alcoholics.

Sadly, alcoholism is an enormous problem in the United States. More than half of all adults have a family history of alcoholism. And one out of three kids lives with a parent who is alcohol- or drug-dependent. Aside from risks such as blacking out or being injured from falls, research shows alcoholism increases chances of heart disease, liver cirrhosis, depression, brain damage, cancer, stroke and suicide. Nearly half of all fatal car accidents are alcohol-related.

Alcoholism usually cannot be controlled by willpower alone. There is no known cure, but it can be treated. Treatment often consists of detoxification, prescription medications and counseling. Regular attendance to Alcoholics Anonymous (alcoholics-anonymous.org) meetings can be highly successful.

MOD! MOD! MOD! 2day i went through my bros text messages, i know i shouldnt, but i did (hes 19 and in college) i learned some pretty scary stuff im really worried about him i cant tell my parents (please dont tell me too, i cant explain why not) it is really worrying me!!!!!!

Hey chica, no I don't think you should tell your 'rents or anyone. It wasn't right that you went through your bro's stuff, how would you feel if he looked through your messages? But that's okay, we all make mistakes that's how we learn, just don't do it again lol. Whatever your bro has going on is his buisness. If he's in trouble or if he did something, let him tell your parents on his own. Smile

both my parents r alcoholics but my dad has been sobre for 20 years now and my mom for 15. i'm home schooled and live in a small town so it's not like i could get a fake ID and go buy any alcohol. everyone knows i'm under 18. so i realy have no axess to any of that stuff anyway.

ImAStrangeChild on 9/26/2009 1:34:00 PM

My parents have drinks in the fridge since six year ago that they never touch, and usually, just eventually throw out. They are awesome role models. They teach me to fight my own battles, to study hard, and to spend your precious time doing something other than trouble!

We now abuse alcohol worse than teen boys who are the same age as we are. That means we will have more problems with things like school and being a good friend to someone. I know with my friends some of them brag about drinking and it drives me crazy.

1 in 4 of us teens have a sexually transmitted disease, which is worse than even boys have and that means we are doing things a lot of them arent and without using protection. And I think drinking might be one of the reasons. That is why I dont drink and why I wouldnt do it around boys because a lot of time you might end up doing something stupid.

I'm reading a book called Runner and the main character, Chance, his dad's an alcoholic, but he still loves his dad. It's a good book.

its very sad but as long as you dont start doing that theres nothing you can really do to prevent it

cali4niablondie on 7/25/2009 8:25:15 PM

The best things in life arn't things.

My dDd is an alchoholic and it is hard living with that. When your a alchoholic you can't even get most jobs because they make you take a drug test or see you acting that way on the job. You don't benefit from drinking alot. You can't walk right, talk right, or think right. And that is very sad.

decemburr96 on 7/18/2009 9:34:33 AM

My friends' mom died a few years ago from being an alchoholic because she wanted to be one with thier father. He practicly murdered her. Alchoholism messes up more lives than just the person doing it. Now there are three kids with an alchoholic dad who can't keep a job

It is sooo sad what the world has come to. Happiness doesn't come from a bottle or pill. When I grow up, I want to help people end their fears and troubles because I know that helping others will bring real happiness.

finkledork on 6/10/2009 12:00:42 AM

i totally agree with you eiffel65, you cant do it alone

i<3mybesties on 4/19/2009 10:37:50 AM

Agreed completely. Nothing can be controlled by willpower or quitting "cold turkey". If so, why would all these anti-smoke/drug/alcohol medication commercials be airing each day, 24/7?
