FACTS ON ALCOHOLISM

  • Fact or fiction: What you need to know about drugs
Research shows children of alcoholics are about four times more likely to develop alcohol problems than others. But alcoholism isn't determined only by genes. Half of all children of alcoholics do not become alcoholics.

Sadly, alcoholism is an enormous problem in the United States. More than half of all adults have a family history of alcoholism. And one out of three kids lives with a parent who is alcohol- or drug-dependent. Aside from risks such as blacking out or being injured from falls, research shows alcoholism increases chances of heart disease, liver cirrhosis, depression, brain damage, cancer, stroke and suicide. Nearly half of all fatal car accidents are alcohol-related.

Alcoholism usually cannot be controlled by willpower alone. There is no known cure, but it can be treated. Treatment often consists of detoxification, prescription medications and counseling. Regular attendance to Alcoholics Anonymous (alcoholics-anonymous.org) meetings can be highly successful.

MODMODMODMODMODMODMODMOD!!!!! MOD MOD MOD!!!! MOD MOD MOD!!!!!
Um... so I just am gonna say the basic stuff... My dad is a little bit of an alcoholic. By little I mean he's fine for 11 months and then the last month... well, I just get kinda scared because he has a medical condition that alcohol can make worse. He doesn't get violent or anything but he acts a little loopy and it freaks me out because he is almost NEVER like that. He has actually wound up in the hospital once. I hate when people say "Don't worry about it" or "It's not your business" because I WANT to help, but I don't know how. It really scares me because he acts like a very different person when he's like that. I've tried everything, but it seems like only begging works. It is like this every year. Please help!!! I don't know what to do! My mom doesn't even know why he does it and he yells at her and denies it every time she brings it up. I really hate when he acts like this!

I think you should talk to your counselor at your school. Theyll be able to help you if you really need it in a bad moment and theyll find you resources to fix this issue. Good luck honey! xoxo kerra

(Srry that this is so long) My dad is an alcoholic and he wont admit it. he always accuses my mom of having a boyfriend and he always embarrasses me when we have to go to things together as a family like school assemblies and stuff like that. we try to tell him but he never listens. sometimes im scared to go/sleepover over friends houses because im scared that my parents will fight (like argue) but it gets rlly loud and i try not to cry. but mu mom always says " u dont need to hear that, just go in ur room" but i just cant help it i have to get involved. also, i have never told any of my friends and im scared if they come over that my dad will come home after work and be drinking or something. i mean he isnt a constant drinker and he has a good job but he does drink quite often. i cant talk to my friends about it but sometimes they can sense that something is wrong. and i dont want to tell them, but i cant keep this inside forever. plz give me some advice

Hey girly, I know exactly what you're going through...trust me. My mom was an alcoholic too, so I know how hard it is. You can't let your dad's problem get in the way of your life anymore than it already is. Go have fun with friends and go to sleepovers. Your mom is right, you shouldn't have to hear them fighting. I know you want to be there to protect your mom, but you have to worry about yourself too. Your mom is an adult and she can handle your dad. You going out isn't going to make anything worse. If anything, it'll make you forget about everything for a few hours, which you definately deserve. Have you tried talking to other relatives or family friends about your dad? Maybe you should talk them and let them know how bad things are getting. They might not realize it.

Also, try talking to your dad when he's sober, just the two of you, and let him know how his actions are affecting the family. I'm sure he loves you guys a lot, so it's best to catch him when you know he hasn't had anything to drink. Maybe right after work, or in the morning. x

We shouldnt even be drinking because we arent even old enough. But people do it at parties I go to and even people who you wouldnt think is drinking may be.

Drinking leads to serious other stuff like drugs and having unprotected sex so we should try and not be tempted by it. And just think what it can be doing to our bodies.

Hey girl,
It's great to hear you care for your bro and are concerned for him.  The best place to start is to talk with him.  Let him know you are worried, and that it makes you uncomfortable that he does that when he watches you.  You could also encourage him to talk to your parents if he's having trouble quitting.  xoxo

That is seriously REALLY sad.
Mod mod mod!!
My grandpa Eddie drinks, and it makes me scared. Alot of my family drinks. My brothers (They are in there 20s) my grandpa, my uncles, my aunts, and one of my cousins even did drugs. It makes me really scared. I cant shake the fealing that I am going to end up like them. My parents dont drink, but I am arround my family that DOES drink alot. It makes me really scared. What do I do?
I don't think I am going to end up like them because I wont drink and I wont do drugs and I wont smoke, but, it still makes me sad.
What do I do?

A lot of families are faced with issues like this. Sometimes, this problem can be genetic, however, if you focus on what's important and surround yourself with good people, you don't have to follow in their footsteps.

MODMODMOD!
I have a big prob. My two bestfreinds are only 12 and have started drinking. They are stealing money and asking older people to buy drinks for them. I don't want to drink but sometimes they start to pressure me. I'm afraid they will become alcoholics and pressure me into drinking to! What do I do?!? Frown

Hey babe, stay strong and true to yourself.  Don't fall for their pressure.  This is just a phase, and if they stop the phase early they won't turn into alcoholics or thieves.  It's important to talk to one of your parents, a trusted adult about the situation and get them some guidance.  I know you may feel like a goody-two-shoes for telling an adult about it, but they're only 12 and could be ruining a lot of opportunities ahead of them.

My family has gone thru this. But he has gotten help and has been sober for 8 months now!Laughing but its still really hard to talk about... I used to cry alot, but now its only when I have to talk about it. After alot of thinking, I am seriously considering not drinking even when I get old enough. It just seems like my way of, i don't know, speaking out against alcohol and the way its influenced my family. Does that sound stupid?

Hey girl, no that's not stupid at all! A lot of people decide to make that same choice. I think it really does say a lot. =]

Hey chica, no I don't think you should tell your 'rents or anyone. It wasn't right that you went through your bro's stuff, how would you feel if he looked through your messages? But that's okay, we all make mistakes that's how we learn, just don't do it again lol. Whatever your bro has going on is his buisness. If he's in trouble or if he did something, let him tell your parents on his own. Smile

We now abuse alcohol worse than teen boys who are the same age as we are. That means we will have more problems with things like school and being a good friend to someone. I know with my friends some of them brag about drinking and it drives me crazy.

1 in 4 of us teens have a sexually transmitted disease, which is worse than even boys have and that means we are doing things a lot of them arent and without using protection. And I think drinking might be one of the reasons. That is why I dont drink and why I wouldnt do it around boys because a lot of time you might end up doing something stupid.

The best things in life arn't things.

My dDd is an alchoholic and it is hard living with that. When your a alchoholic you can't even get most jobs because they make you take a drug test or see you acting that way on the job. You don't benefit from drinking alot. You can't walk right, talk right, or think right. And that is very sad.
