2008 Summer Olympics: Alicia Sacramone

Alicia Sacramone helped the U.S. gymnastics squad secure silver, even if she didn’t have her best meet (she fell on beam and floor). Days later, this tough-as-nails chick dazzled on vault, only to miss bronze by .025. This 20-year-old has been a gymnastic world champ on two events, the Ivy League Rookie of the year (so, yeah, she’s way smart, too) and has great taste in music (check out her playlist below!). All around? This girl is golden.

GL: What's your favorite way to relax after a crazy stressful day?

Alicia: I really like driving, as funny as that sounds. It takes about an hour or more with traffic to drive from school (Brown University, Providence, RI) to where I train. The time in the car listening to music always seems very peaceful.

GL: Your academic career is way impressive, just like your gymnastics. What's your advice for balancing school and sports?

AS: Being so busy has really helped me balance my life and manage my time well. Gymnastics and school can both be stressful at times, so it’s always good to have an outlet when I need one. When I’d get a break from training, it was great to be able to go back to school to hang out with my friends and escape for a bit.

GL: What do you always bring with you when you are traveling to a faraway meet?

AS: I always bring a travel pillow on planes. I also travel with my iPod, computer, DVD’s, hair straightener and Cliff bars.

GL: Fill in the blank: When I'm not in the gym, I'm...

AS: …in school.

GL: When I’m not in school, I’m…

AS: …having fun with my friends.

GL: What kind of music do you listen to before a big meet?

AS: I like a lot of different types of music. Pop, hip-hop and dance are great before competition.

GL: What's your best advice for our readers on how they can bounce back from a bobble either in life or in the gym?

AS: Get back up and keep going!

Alicia spills her pre-competition playlist!

Whatever. She's Alicia Sacramone.
I mean, the U.S. trains hard,
but I am so totally mad at them AND the press right now...saying that Chinese athletes are UNDERAGE for God's sake!!!!
How do they know? Do they have DNA samples?
So whatever, Alicia Sacramone, Shawn Johnson, Nastia Liukin, whatever.
I'm all about Cheng Fei, He Kexin, He Wenna, Yang Yilin, Jiang Yuyuan and Deng Linlin.

I love Alicia she is very talented. I always watch gymnasticas ans swimming when the olympics are and when she was falling I was holding my breath. I felt so bad but she got back up and finished and that took a lot of strength to do.

girly-girl-#1 on 8/25/2008 9:57:57 AM

girly-girl-#1-
well, sorry, but am I just supposed to sit around and read all the comments that accuse the Chinese team of cheating? And GL just treats the other countries like, nonexistent. I'm Chinese, and it rele, rele hurts when I read comments or online articles about that. And the rest of China feels the same way. I mean, it's great that the U.S. team got that far, but just because China's better at sports that involve creativity and are more, well, artistic (i.e. gymnastics or diving) does NOT give an excuse for the U.S. to criticize the Chinese team. I mean, those people on Yahoo news etc. do anything imaginable to make the U.S. team look better, including a "real" medal count, which excludes all the judged events that China excels at. If the situation was reversed, they'd probably make a "real" medal count that takes away timed events. See, they're willing to do anything to make the U.S. team better. I'm officially done with my tirade.

Personal Best: My proudest moment so far has to be being a part of team USA for the 2008 Beijing Olympics after coming in first place at the Olympic Trials in June.

Secret to Success: I have always had tons of energy, ever since I was 2 doing pull-ups in my playpen. I take that energy and transfer it into my gymnastic routines. I try to focus all my energy into whatever I’m doing, whether it’s practice or competing for the gold.
