Q&A

My period is so unpredictable!

It’s been a year, and my period is still irregular. Sometimes my cycle lasts 18 days; other times, it’s 31. When will it be normal?

Well, your period is normal! It can take up to two years for your body to get used to menstruating. In that time, it will come and go as it pleases-and that’s not unusual. Why? "Your body is not producing hormones at even levels yet," explains Dr. Charles Wibbelsman, author of The Teenage Body Book, but they should regulate themselves soon.

Just so you know, stress can get your cycle off-schedule, too. And for some girls, their periods are never all that regular, even after many years. While it’s annoying now, just try to be patient. Your body is working hard to solve the problem, we promise.

is it safe to shower when you have your period?
can you wash "down there" with soap when your on your period? what if you leak while in the shower?

MOD,
My period is ALWAYSSSSSSS late, up to 3 or 4 weeks late! sometimes even like a month and a half! I've had my period for like 2 1/2 years and it's only been regular ONCE. IDK what's wrong! should I see a gyno??
-cheerleader2478

Hey babe,

If this is how it's always been then this is probably normal for you. If it's really bothering you, talk to your doc or a gyno about it.

xoxo Allie

I have a few questions:
1.) What exactly is a cycle?
2.) What is the maximum days you should have your period before you need to go see a doc?
3.) I had some black clumps on my pad. Normal?
Thanks! Kayla

A cycle is the process that happens that gives you your period every month. About the 2nd question, if your period is lasting more than a week, go see your doctor, but that doesnt happen too much. And finally black clumps are very normal. Everyone gets that. xoxo kerra

thanks Smile Iv had it for a year now. and sometimes it lasts 2 days. one time it lasted for 3....I think its a little short.....but IDK if thats enough to talk to a doc about.

my period always lasts for like, 1 day. is that normal??

Hey babe, most periods last a little longer, like 5-7 days so it could just be irregular because it's the early start of your period but I would talk to a doc about it just to be sure.

MOD I've had my period for 3 years and it has always been very precise, yet I was supposed to get it 12 days ago and it still hasn't arrived. I've had a lot of mood swings (lots of crying about nothing special. that's not the usual me.)Should I be worried?

Hey girl! As long as there is no reason why you shouldn't get it, you're probably fine. If you're still worried in a few days head to the doc!

I have had my period about seven times now.I was supposed to get it last week and it never came. I know that it can be irregular when you first start having your period, but how will i know when it will come again? can it come at any point and i just need to look out for symptoms, or do you think it will come in about 21-35 days? Thanks

mod: how do i know when i will start my period so i dont ruin my clothes last month i started on the 26 of august

Hey girl, Unfortunately your period prob won't be regular the first few months. You got it almost a month ago, so I suggest putting in a thin pantyliner for now. Luckily summer's over so you don't have to worry about swimming in the pool with it and all that.  When you do get it again, you'll be able to tell and then change to a bigger pad, so keep one in your backpack and purse just in case.  Best of luck, girlie! <3, Miliana

Hey girl, totes normal and congrats! You're that much closer to being a woman. That said, you'll notice your first couple years with the big dot that your cycles may not be regular -- that's totes normal too. Just take care of yourself and keep a pad or two on you (just in case!) and you'll be fine!

I have had my period for 2 and a half years and have never been normal. Sometimes I go 5 months without getting it. Recently, I have had thick black blood, is this normal? When will my period be regular?

hpfan on 9/13/2009 6:17:51 PM

MOD MOD
I was talking with a girl at school about irregular periods and sex. She said that it was good if they were irregular because then if you are sexually active that it would be harder to get pregnant because getting pregnant has to do when you have your period. Is what she was saying kind of true or not if you have started having sex?

What she's saying doesn't make sense. Here's the truth: Your period will prob be irregular for the first few years. If you become sexually active, there's basically one day when you can get pregnant (called ovulation), which is harder to calculate if it's irregular. But it doesn't change whether you can get pregnant or not. Make sense? Best, Miliana

Am I supposed to have nausea with my period? Because I sure do! How can I get rid of it w/o meds or soda? I hafta go to bed soon!
Thanks!

Hey girl, sorry for the delay. Sometimes nausea or dizziness is totally natural with your period -- it's that icky PMS. My suggestion is to drink some water and get a little rest. Sleep's a great way to give your body a chance to rest and that nausea to settle down. If you're still feeling iffy, don't be afraid to talk to your 'rents. They may be able to give you something that'll get rid of those yucky feelings. Get some shut-eye, 'lil darling. You'll feel better in the morning!

is it ok if ur period is like that and its been over 3 years since u started? cuz mine is like that. it used 2 never b irregular until a few months ago.

A little irregularity happens to everyone. But if the distance between your periods gets longer and longer you may want to go to a doctor to be checked out. Incredibly irregular periods are not good and may be caused by a bigger issue. Best, Kristen

I saw this commercial on tv for a pill that will regulate your period, I think it was when I was watching The Secret Life, but there is a birth control for teens that helps regulate our periods so they only happen 4 times a year.

And it doesnt sound like you need it for birth control but just to regulate your period, so you might be able to talk to a doctor or your mom about it. I wish I could remember the name of it, but I bet if you searched online for '4 times a year birth control' you will find it.

Hey um, i have a question, like i know that your period is supposed to come every 28 days, but do u start counting when u begin or when it goes away?
THX!

Hey girl!

You are supposed to count it from the day you start your period to the next time you start your period. Every girls cycle is different. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask your mom or a trusted adult or doctor.

MOD- someone told me that its ok to miss periods for the first two years(this is my 4th month w/o it) but if I don't get it for 6 months or more, its REALLY bad. is this true???

hey girl!

When i first had my period i wouldnt get it for like 6 -9 months, but it eventually became regular. Sometimes your body just needs time to get your cycle regular. BUt if you are really concerned talk to your parents about going to see a doctor. Ashley<3

Hey girl,

Many women experience irregular cycles, so my guess is that you are fine.  Since it's only been a week, maybe you are experiencing a change in your cycle and you'll see your period soon.  But, if it really bothers you try sitting up an appointment with you physician.                                                                 Chardae B.
