Q&A

Sweet sixteen and no sign of a period

I’m 16 and haven’t gotten a period. I guess I should see a doctor, but I’m embarrassed.

Go to the doctor! And no need to be embarrassed. You wouldn’t hesitate to ask your math teacher for help with the Pythagorean theorem. A math teacher’s job is to answer numbers questions; a gynecologist’s job is to answer health questions. Yes, it’s a bit awkward to talk about puberty—at first. But it only feels funny for a split sec.

The doc is there to listen to your concerns and make sure you’re healthy. She’ll probably tell you your late-blooming isn’t a prob. True, most girls start their periods at 12 or 13, but you’re probably maturing more slowly—especially if your mom and aunts did. But sometimes, says Dr. Adelaide Nardone, ob/gyn and medical advisor to the Vagisil Women’s Health Center, girls don’t menstruate due to hormonal issues, weight gain or loss, or other treatable reasons. So make that appointment as soon as possible.

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!!I have lots of discharge and all the other syptoms of an upcoming period for over a year now and it hasnt came yet im 11 im 5ft7 and i wear between 34A and 36A in cup size and everyone in my family says my body is built older than than my regular age. My mom has not explained anything to me.Do I need a starter kit? Do you think My period will come soon? What should I tell my mom? Can it be true my body is built older than i am in years?

Your period will prob come soon. Talk to your mom and ask for advice; I'm sure she's happy to help. And your body is just maturing a little faster; it doesn't mean that you are built wrong! Best,

Miliana B.

Hey girl!  It sounds like you're going to get your period soon since you're starting to develop and get discharge.  Just relax and let your body takes its natural course.  Best, Kristen

mod i had 2 periods already. in between my first day and 2 period it was 31 days. it has been 31 days since my 2 period ended but i haven't gotten it yet is that normal?

Hey girl, that is perfectly normal. The first few years of your period can be irregular. But don't worry, soon enough your flow will start to develop a regular pattern that you can keep track of.

MOD MOD MOD okay so I got my first period in February and I haven't told any of my friends. My mom knows and my sister and sadly my dad but that's a whole different story. Anyways I really want to tell one of them but only one of them has had theirs and she has all the same friends as me and she told them and now all the girls and maybe even some of the boys in my class know but I just want my closest friends to know but I doubt 3 people can keep a secret especially considering that one girl told them and now everybody knows. Help I don't know if I should tell them or not. PLEASE REPLY SOON!!!
P.S. Sorry my messages are always so long and confusing. I'll try to make them shorter and easier to understand. Smile

Hey! I suggest you tell your closest friends and ask them not to tell anyone else. But if other people find out it's not a big deal. By the time you're in high school every single girl has their period and talks about it openly. Even with the guys sometimes. So trust me, getting your period is something that every girl goes through and using your friends as a support system is very helpful. xoxo kerra

I have a question. I am almost 13 and I have not gotten any armpit hair or any dark hair any where so, no period. My mom told me that she got her period in late summer between 7 & 8 grade, but I haven't gotten mine yet. You are supposed to get your period around the same time as your mom, right? I don't really want to get it, but is there something wrong?

Hey girl. No worries it's totally norm. It can take some girls almost a year to get a regular period! This happens all the time! Mel

Melany T.

Myrriah on 8/25/2009 9:38:59 AM

it's not bad. for one, when you get your period can be estimated by when other woman in your family, mostly your mom, got their period. also, it is common for some to not get their period until around 16. but you'll definately get it. every girl will. no matter how long you'll have it

lexicon12 on 8/24/2009 4:05:18 PM

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD my body has always been late to develope. does that mean i'm gonna get my period late? or is the developing speed of my boobs, etc.not important in terms of when i'm gonna get my period?

The way your chest develops isn't exactly directly related to how fast you will get your period. Don't stress if you haven't gotten it yet. Some girls don't get it till they're 15 and that's still healthy!

No worries, honey! I got mine before all my friends and it was just weird (i.e., never pads at there house when I needed one). And I think its better to be late then early. Good luck!

twilightocd735 on 4/19/2009 10:18:27 AM

whoever says you should definitely go to the doctor, or it's quite odd, ITS NOT! my mom got hers when she was almost 17! and she obviously had a kid (yours truly) so you will be fine! many people are just late bloomers!

hellolovely18 on 4/18/2009 9:29:47 PM

buffy, you might start yours soon. I haven't, and I'm older than you! So you never know. You may have hips and a chest and everything and still not have it like me.

WritingChic on 3/4/2009 7:54:30 PM

I have 32A boobs
I have pubic hair
I am 5'5 1/2 feet tall
I am 13 (in 2 days i'll be 13)
I weigh about 105 pounds
sports i play:soccer, basketball, cross country, track
I have discharge
Am I about to start my period?

buffy on 2/4/2009 5:11:58 PM

I am 15 and turning 16 this year and all my friends got their periods by the time they were like 13 or 14 and they always talk about it. I think they think I've had mine, but I haven't and it's just awkward for me so I never say anything. I am naturally very skinny it runs in the family so that might have something to do with it, but my mom got hers before my age and she was a late bloomer too. I even asked a doctor about it and she said it was fine, but I still don't feel like it's normal.

prima5 on 1/26/2009 9:44:43 PM

Hey girl, it's perfectly normal I mean I got my period when I was seventeen. it's ok. Ya, I think you should go see a doctor.

MOD
I'm 14 but will be 15 in a few months and i still dont have my period. My mom had hers when she was 12. Everytime i have gone to the doctor for the past 3 years, i've just been told that it will be here "any day now". My friends tell me that i'm lucky but at the same time i feel kinda embarassed cuz even all the guys in my grade know about it. I guess one of my friends overheard them talking about who is still periodless one day in class and my name came up!!!

Hiya girl, it is totally normal for you not to have your period at 15. Everyone is different! There's no need to be embarrassed, people mature and develop at their own pace, and that's what makes each of us unique and special. I understand you might feel left out from your friends, but be patient. Promise that your time will come soon enough and then you'll be wondering, "why did I want this again?" Hehe. -Hugs, Jiae

MOD MOD!
Sorry to ask again but what's Spotting?

Hey girl!

Spotting is when u have little spots of blood that is not necessarily your period. If you have any concern talk to your mom and a doctor.

frostybunny9 on 12/18/2008 8:00:28 PM

MOD Im 16 almost 17. I haven't started yet I am really confused. I haven't stated yet so I'm not sure about everything. my aunt started when she was 10 and I have no clue with my mom my sister started when she was 14 and hers are really light every time. me no sign. Ever since the 5th grade I stated to pack around my little ditty bag with pads and all that stuff in it but after years went by nothing happened and I just stopped putting it in my bag. My two best friends have there period the same week and break and lunch we spend about 5-10 minutes in there and I'm just standing there. I feel awkward I'm a junior in high school shouldn't I have stated yet? I keep thinking im a dud and I wouldn't be able to have kids at all and no one will want to marry me if they want kids. I feel that Im lacking for everyone else in my school I know everyone is different and mine will come when its ready but I don't what to not know if I a dud. My mom bought some pad and tampons the other day and I will quote her. "I know you said that you don't need them but I bought some pads and tampons for you, just in case." I have 4 boxes of every kind of pad and two boxes of tampons. NEVER OPENED! I kinda think she thinks I have but im not telling her. I want to talk to her about it but I dont know how to start. IM sure she will ask me by my 17th birthday if I have started and she will make me go to the gynecologist, but I felt really weird the last time. her assistant kept asking me over and over if I started my period and she looked at me funky. like I was some strange thing. She was really quite rude and I told my mom but she said she was probably just having a bad day but it ruined it for me. I know she was fired but I still don't want to be grilled by someone who doesn't know what its like to be the odd one at school who doesn't need to use the restroom every 2 hours to change. I want to be normal. I am afraid I wouldn't be able to have kids or have a normal life. What should I do? How should I talk to my mom about these things?

Well girlie I see why your a little concerned most girls get thier period when thier in middle school and here you are almost out of high school and nothing. if I were you I would sit down with your mom and just ask her "do you think I'm lie about not haveing my period? then just taking from their tell her your concerns it make it a girls night or something just you and her.  I think its a good idea to go to the doctor you never know it might not be that bad this time. when the doctors ask you different ? they are just trying to get a history from you. thier are certain things that they need to know to help diagnose you. I know going is embaressing but it is something that needs to be done. The doctor does this for a lving and thiers nothing you have that he hasn't seen before. Just try being  open with your mom so that she can get an uderstanding about how you fel See ya and good luck Tobie♥

BrittanyBug on 12/13/2008 1:04:45 AM

yea i say go to the doctor

OhYeaitsMe on 12/5/2008 9:38:24 PM

Ya, Id go to the doctor to make sure, but i think you'll more than likely get it soon.
I got mine when I was 10 and I thought that was too early.
I guess its just in human nature to worry Smile

ive had my period for like 6 or 8 months now and i dont know if i should go see a gyno. im thirteen and dont really know what they at gyno. What do they do? Should i go see one?

Hey there girl, It's a good idea to go and get familiar with the gyno doctor. What they basically do is search around down there to make sure everything is normal and healthy. Once you start going, you should go every few months. xo Annemarie

alyssa11 on 11/15/2008 6:03:27 PM

hey, Id say dont worry and wait till youre 17 to see a doctor. my sis started when she was 16 and I started at 15 and a half. every BODY is different!
