My periods gone missing!

I haven’t gotten my period for months. Is this unusual? Is something wrong?

Periods should be renamed “parentheses,” because when you first start getting it, you never know when it’s going to come along. (A period is always at the end of a sentence, but parentheses are harder to predict.)

Between ages 12 and 17, your hormones send signals to wake up your ovaries. The ovaries release the egg. The egg travels to the uterus. The uterine lining builds up just in case of a pregnancy. When there’s no pregnancy, your body sheds the lining. That’s your period. But if you’ve just recently started getting a period, the hormones don’t always pump out on schedule. “You can go three to four months with no period, be regular for six months, then skip a month, and then have one every few weeks,” explains Dr. Larrian Gillespie, gynecologist and author of You’re Not Crazy, It’s Your Hormones.

By 18, earlier for some, your cycle will become more regular. But periods are just plain unpredictable during puberty. So chances are good that you don’t need to worry!

Thankyou Jana K. for answering my questions. Just a couple more questions! First, my friends are really weird, all of our conversations HAVE to be about boys,periods , and gossip. How do I tell her to stop gossiping and not to ALWAYS talk about that kind of stuff, it iis really annoying! Second, my friends are tottaly freaking out! They are saying in April they will be showing us a video on puberty. What is to freak out about??? My older sister said that I NEED to whatch it because I have to learn more about it. And third, how do you stop moodswings? Today at school I was crying for no reason! I was so emmbarresed, so I went to the bathroom to clean off my makeup and get back to class.How do you stop it??? HELP ME! My older sister is an expert on periods, she has been having hers for years. I really want to ask her if she can at least tell me when I might get my period, because I have all the signs and she might know. I really know I should ask a doctor, but I do not want my younger sister to know about this. My little sister goes to the yearly checkup with me because then she has hers. Please tell me how to talk to my doctor and older sister about this. Thanks!!!

Hey babes, hoenstly there is no tried and true method to periods. Your sister wont know when you are getting yours. You are different from her and there isnt a specific time when every girl gets theres. I would definitely ask your sister questions about it, but dont ask her to predict if for you. As for your doctor, if youre at the age where you think you are going to be getting your period soon, then jsut ask your mother if you can go in by yourself. You want privacy. xo JANA

I haven't had my period since July and it is DECEMBER. I'm know for sure I'm not pregnant...haha. But, I just think it is really weird that I haven't had it in so long. Is this common?

Hey missy, yup that's normal. Periods are known to skip. Don't be nervous he's your doctor and he's there to help you. And he probably has other female patients who are going through the same things as you, so no worries. If you're really nervous, bring your parent in with you and all three of you guys can talk. (But I understand, I'd be a little shy too.)

I just got my period (i am almost positive!) this morning, but sometimes pads don't fit me right. Because my mom uses reg. and i need slender. Right now I am using A slender one i got in health, and it is my last one. Do they sell packs of smaller ones that aren't panti-liners, but reg. pads? And when can I start using tampons? like after 3/4 months?? Or whenever I am Ready?

Hey girl, you can start using tampons whenever you are ready. Talk to your mom about it and she'll be able to offer you her opinion too to help you make a decision. As for the slender pads, you can find them anywhere they sell pads and tampons, like the drugstore or grocery story. They have bulk and small packs, shop around.

Ok this is really quick. I'm 13 and today I've started my first (i think )FULL period. It's still really light because 1) it's the first day and 2) because it's one of my first periods. So does your period stop in the middle (or sometime )during the day? Like, it's not CONSTANTLY coming out, but does it stop flowing at all during the day? Thanks so much!

MOD Two things: 1. Is it normal to have a one day break where you don't have your period? (first period, this happened) 2. My period started on Friday, and yesterday I didn't have it. My mom bought me a pack of 16 pads and I'm wearing the last one now. Good?

Hey girl! It's pretty normal. It will take a year or so for your period to be regulated and not so weird! No worries!

Okay so ive only been getting my period for about 11 months and recently its been on the first day of every month. this month i tried using tampons, and it didnt work, wich i am totally fine with. but not im getting alot of yellowy/creamish discharge and it smells more than normal. should i tell my Doc, or just make sure to clean down there? also is it possible that the soap i use hasnt been totally getting washed out and making it look like more discharge?

Hey girl! It might just be changing a little; no worries! And, yeah make sure you wash and rinse WELL! Shower everyday when you have your period and make sure you're staying clean!

my friend has had her period for a while, and she doesnt wear tampons. she wears pads EVERY SINGLE DAY just for the discharge. i tried to tell her that pads are really expensive, and the discharge will come off in the wash, but she wont listen. she cant afford to be wasting pads like that, but she just wont listen to me. what can i say to her?

There's not much you can say. Just let her do what she wants to do.

hey girl! When girls first get their periods, they tend to be irregular. So you shouldn't worry about it. But, if you've been regular for a while, and all of a sudden didn't get it, see a doc. Best, Kristen

Everyone's different, but when you first start getting your period it can be irregular like this sometimes. If you're concerned ask the rents to set up a doc appointment and get all your questions answered.

i havent had my period for about 4 to 5 months. i just told my mom and she kind of freaked out saying that i needed to see a doctor. the last time i had my period, it was pretty heavy. should i see a doctor about how long it has been since i have had my period? oh and can having a heavy period effect how long until you have your next one? thanks for the help!

I got my period when i was 11 and im 14 now. When i get it, it's really heavy and lasts for about 10 days. but i usually don't get it for 3-6 months. Is there something wrong with me? Why am i not normal yet?

I def don't want to give you the wrong advice, but you should really speak with a parent and set up an appointment to see a doc. They will be able to give you the best info and let you know what's going on.

Im 13 now I got my first period about august 29th 2008 and it hasnt shown since that was nearly 6 months ago. When I did get it it lasted about 7days.
Is this normal I'm not very sporty, Im normal weight, and I have a normal diet.

**** MOD MOD MOD **** OMG i need help! Im a VERY athletic girl, i love to play soccer and volleyball and track! (even thought our school doesn't have track) But anyways, i started my periods last summer (2007- 2008) and i think a year is enough to settle my harmones down, but i guess not. My periods are really crazy! Like i get only a little bit everday but they last of like 2-3 weeks! Its crazy! So ican NEVER go swimming because my periods are there and i would NEVER dare to wear a tampon. My mom says i can wear them once in a while, but i'm just tooo scared! And once i remember last year my period lasted 1 and 1/2 months! and they are totally odd times, like one is in the begining of 1 month and one is the end of another! Will it EVER calm down?!!??

Hey girl! Don't worry, you're not alone. A lot of girls go through periods of time with irregular periods. Everyone's different so that period of time can differ. If the problem continues I would talk to your mom about going to a doctor. They might be able to perscribe you something to make them more predictable.

Omg! This is happening to me. MOD!!! what should I wear until it happens again. I have back-up in my backpack and when i thought it was going to happen i kept a tampon in my pocket(along with all the other stuff i put in there)

Hey babe, if you think it's going to happen like ASAP you can put a small panty liner on. These are very light and not bulky so it won't bother you and it'll be able to catch anything until you make it to a bathroom to put some more heavy duty protection on!

Hey girl, you should use toilet paper as a "pad" and ask a friend is she has one. If not, you might be able to get some from the main office or school nurse. -lauren

hey! how was your day? Sooo, there was that guy that liked me but idk if i like him yada yada yada so anyway! At school today during science (UGH) we kept looking at each other looking away it was kinda like silent flirting!
