GIRL TALK: Math Meltdown

I'm starting at a new school and I’m completely okay with that because I have tons of old elementary friends who go to that school. Anyways, when I first started out my mom told the counselor I am really good at math and need advanced math. I was really kind of bummed out about the whole thing but to make my mom happy I took the class anyways. I got a 38% on last week's quiz and my teachers and my mom keep saying I can do great. They keep pressuring me to continue on in that class and not transfer to a regular 7th grade math class. What should I do?! No one's understanding my struggle in advanced math class help please!!!!!

-mathoholic

Hey, Mathoholic! It's totally cool that you're at a new school and not freakin' out! As for your math class and grades...sounds like a bummer, BUT, don't think it's the end of the world just yet. I know you feel the pressure from your teacher and your mom, but don't sweat it. They simply believe in you and can see that you have a lot of potential to do well in this advanced math class!

So you took a quiz and got a low score! What gives? It's one quiz that you can learn from! I totally think you can do well in this class, babe. Challenge yourself with a tough math class rather than fall asleep in a class that is way too easy for you! At the end, you'll have learned so much and will be proud of having pushed yourself in the tough class.

You may not feel comfortable yet, but I think you should stick with it a little longer and try your absolute best! If the class is seriously unbearable, you should sit down and talk with your mom and your teacher. They'll understand if you really don't think you can do it!

But for now, give it your best shot and challenge yourself, girlie!

<3, Sharon

I'm am A student, but I'm having trouble with language. We're learning about one of my pet peeves, double negatives. It seems like we're doing advanced high school langauge.

MOD and GIRLS!!!
i need your ideas pleaseeeeeee
I go to a small (not very wealthy) catholic school. Im in 8th grade, and we are planning for our end of the year trip in june to NYC. we are only going for a day, but the trip is REALLY expensive. A lot of people dont have a lot of money to pay for the trip, and it would be extrememly halpful if we got a lot of good fundraisers. We have dances every month, but there are only 36 kids in grades 6-8, so its the same people that go to the dances and the same people that spend the money. We REALLY need good fundraisers. Our school is K-8.
PLEASE HELP AND GIVE ME SOME FUNDRAISING IDEAS! thanks!

Hey babes, Why not do a bake-off and sell some cupcakes? Or have a flea market with a bunch of stuff from your houses that you want to get rid of (old clothes, books?). You can also do a car wash if you are in a warm climate. xo Annemarie

Frown that sux. sorry.

megabegabyte on 12/7/2008 11:09:20 PM

MOD please help me! I have a horrible math teacher. She gives us our homework, gives us quizes, we all fail and THEN she "tries" teaching it. She yells at us when we don't understand it and says we need to "buckle down". I never do well on the tests, needless to say. My brother 5 years ago had the saem problem with the same teacher. My mom says that I just need to do my best, but I've gone in after school because I am in sports and don't want to get bad grades. Help Help Help!

Hey girl, there's nothing you can really do but try your hardest.  Sometimes you just have to deal with horrible teachers.  when this happens, just remember that grades aren't everything. -lauren

LilGirl08 on 12/7/2008 2:23:01 PM

MOD Hey I am in an advanced math class... we had a test right after the break and more than half the class, including me failed! I had been woking up to an A- grade in math and I think I`m a C student now. She gave extra credit and stuff... I`m going to do it but what can I do to bring up my grades before the end of the quarter. Also, my teacher doesn`t believe in extra credit so this opportunity will never happen again!!! Please answer this soon I only have this week to bring my grades up!

Hey babe,
Talk to your teacher about getting extra help and that may work out.<3 Sherryn D.

Help!
I have some bad teachers this year. My friends have them too and think that they are bad too! My grades are slowly going down. Finals are coming up and I am FREAKING OUT! What should I do to save my grade before it's to late!

heartts on 12/6/2008 4:17:00 PM

Hi! I'm a year ahead in math too! And I have some tips. For anyone in advanced math (or really any level or subject) try this- if your having trouble understanding concepts and stuff, bring home your binder/folder/textbook/whatever home every night and review the everything you've covered in that chapter/section EVERY NIGHT. You can also sit down with a parent or older sibling that knows the stuff for 30 minutes EVERY NIGHT. They can help you! Then when a test or quiz comes around you already know everything!

Hope this helps!

flip-flop-diva-
our teachers are like that too! we got soooooo much homework during the volleyball season and i couldn't keep up because i'd fall asleep over my homework every night (i had volleyball almost every day until about six or seven. but my math teacher doesn't assign homework on weekends b/c she says that weekends are family time (i wish the other teachers thought that too!)

smileysevvie on 12/6/2008 2:39:11 PM

i just got an A on my mid-semester grades in pre-algebra which is advanced math for 7th grade at my school, and its a miracle! i'm usually a b-student in math. i still hate math and i suck at most of it...

smileysevvie on 12/6/2008 2:32:22 PM

Well, that's a rather...unusual picture. :S Lol.

OMG im failing math!!! my stupid school put our whole grade in Algebra 1/2 and we arent suppose to take that class until 9th grade (in 8th now). Soo many ppl skipped pre-alg and automatically went into Algebra 1/2 without taking the pre course! how stupid is that???! And my friends are in 9th grade (highschool) and they are taking the same class as i am and im in middle school!! And they are getting A's!! so, i have a test 2morrow and this year ive been failing all my tests cuz its sooooo hard! Im probably going to fail 2morrows test :[

please with me luck. i really need it!

dancechiky456 on 12/4/2008 10:37:09 PM

I'm in a bunch of advances classes at my school. I like them better, because the students actually want to be there. And I still have a 4. 0! Please, check out my profile, I'll be sure to return the favor!

I asked this question before on this same page, but it never showed up! Anyways, PLEASE help me with this! So, I chose creative writing as my elective next semester, but now I’m beginning to regret it. See, I’ve heard horror stories about creative writing. My friend is taking the class this semester, and she says that it’s horrible; same with a lot of other ppl taking the class now. Plus, the teacher is also my math teacher and I HATE HIM! Anyways, today my friend who’s also taking creative writing next semester asked our counselor if he could switch out. She told him that it was probably too late now to switch out and she would have to check and see if creative writing had been one of his top choices. I want to ask her if I can switch out too, but I know she’ll say no because creative writing was my number one choice for an elective!!! I know that if I don’t tell her the real reason I want to switch out (because of the teacher), she won’t let me switch out and I’ll have to spend THREE HOURS A DAY with him (cause I have him for math, too)!!! Anyways, if I switch out of the class than the teacher will know because A LOT of people have switched out of it so far. And I cannot put a bad impression on him! So, my question is, should I switch out or not? If I should, what should I tell the counselor? PLEASE HELP ME!!! I need to know by tomorrow.

Hey there girlie, I saw that you did ask this but unfortunately  think there was a technical problem with the other Mod- which is why it didn't get answered. Sorry about that! As for your q, I would not switch out! Creative writing is a lot of fun- it was always my favorite class. And think of what an amazing impression that will make if all these people dropped and you're still there, plugging away at your writing. This is the kinda stuff that looks good when you look for a writing job later in life! xo Annemarie

I am in 8th Grade and take Colledge Level Geometry. No joke. I am often feeling bored or like I'm the only one who doesn't understand. But now I know, I'm not the only one and I simply do my best. My mom and dad are great because they know I'm always doing my best and they love me even if I end up with a low grade.

If you have confidence in yourself, others will too. Laughing

I've been dating my BF for a while now, but ever since I've started going out with him I noticed that one of his girl friends, they're just friends, has a crush on him. She's a grade below us but next year she'll be on the cross country team with us so I don't want to say anything to her that would ruin any teamwork. However, she's really starting to bug me. She's constantly flirting with him and whenever I come over she glares at me or just stares me down. I trust my boyfriend but he also has a really short intention span (typical boy) so some days I'm really worried he might just leave me for her. I don't mind if they're just friends but I really want to tell her not to flirt with him anymore. Is there any way to do this without sounding possessive or mean?

Hey babes, Why not try to become friends with her. I would just show her what a cool chick I am and then explain that you are upset about the situation. Hopefully she'll understand. xo Annemarie

Sry, i think i posted this already. i don't know..
anyways, i'm going crazy over this guy and i'm 99% sure he likes me too. I can't stop thinking about how i wish i was at school and i could talk to him. How can I get my mind a crush???

Hey girl, Are you asking how to get your mind off him? Simple. DVD box set of your favorite TV show, bags of goodies and popcorn, and three of your closest BFFs for one weekend! xo Annemarie

**MOD** I have been stayin up all night doing homework. I think it is because i put it off. I some times wake up extra early like i will have to tommorrow. I don't know why I do this. And when I ask my mom for help she says go use the computer it should have the anwser. The thing is i want help from her not anwsers from the computer. Also I have a very high stress level with homework so it is hard for me.(sometimes i'll just bust out in tears.)

hey babes, I'm sorry you feel this way. The t hing is, homework is so much harder now than it was when our rents were in school, which means mom might not always have the answer. Do you have a sib or other adult who you can do work with? Maybe you could also ask a friend to come over and you can do it together over some snacks. That way it gets done asap and you have someone to help you figure it out. xo Annemarie

peyaut9996 on 12/4/2008 8:37:14 PM

MOD:I'm in seventh grade. I dont really like it. But in sixth grade I loved school like so much. I also had a crush on my math teacher who was 30 years old. He was so nice and funny and the best teacher I ever had. I cant forget about him. I miss having him as a teacher so much. I try going to visit him sometimes at the end of the day. However when I do he just gives me a little smile and says hi. It makes me feel real sad and as if he doesnt miss having me as a student at all.Help?

Hey girl, I am sure your old teach remembers what a great student you were- but you were just a student to him, albiet a fantastic and memorable one! While you may have had a crush on him, you absolutely need to drop it and move on. There are plenty of adorable  guys your age to oogle. xo Annemarie

hey, sorry, it's not really a school question.
I know I could ask this guy out, but I just REALLY want him to ask me! We have an awesome friendship and I don't want to mess this up! What can I do??? Is it bad for me to be CRAZYYY over this guy, but still think that making it a dating thing would mess it up?

Hey girl, Maybe you can ask around to see if he's into you that way. This way you don't jump in and mess things up. xo Annemarie

em9508 on 12/4/2008 7:50:42 PM

hey just study and pay more attention in class, and you'll do fine!

FutbolChica on 12/4/2008 7:15:03 PM

At our school, we don't really have advanced math or anything... just extra classes you can take if you want to that don't actually count for a grade. So go us! I guess.

Mespirita on 12/4/2008 7:04:16 PM

I'm still pretty good at my math (A's and B's) but I HATEEEE it. I've always been a grade ahead of math (advanced i guess), but this year I went back to my grade level in it. It was just too much for me to handle with everything else I was doing... and my mom thought that if I wasn't learning well, it's really not going to help me out much. It's better to just be on grade level if that's all you can handle. Try talking to your mom about it. I'm sure she'll understand.

Shouldn't my teachers know most of these students have a LIFE which includes friends, family, church, time alone, and many other things BESIDES WORK and that we NEED A BREAK FROM IT ALL WHEN WE ARE NOT IN SCHOOL?!?!

MOD- Please help!!
I recently broke up with a guy that is really sweet and all, but after only 4 days of going out, I realized I was completely UNattracted to him. (At least in that way). He's taking it kinda hard, but that's not my main issue. One of my friends said that they think I only went out with him "Cuz I could". Not to brag, but I have recently been getting LOADS of attention from boys... not like I'm trying to attract them, but they just come to me. It kinda makes me look like a skank, so I understand where my friend is coming from, but idk. What if this happens again? I don't want to accidentally fall for a guy and then realize I don't like him and look like a complete user? What do I do if my friend continues to talk about this? Am I a Skank for falling for guys when I find out they like me?
Sorry it's so long, but I really nedd the advice.
Thanx so much,
Ky

Hey girl, It's a problem that happens to a lot of girls. The thing is, you date guys to see if you like them or not- that's why we date and don't just jump into marriages, ya know? So if you date him and figure out that he isn't excactly for you, don't feel too bad. Just don't make a habit of it. xo Annemarie

xXStarbucksGirlXx on 12/4/2008 5:21:30 PM

I'm in an advanced math class too, and it's definitely harder than last year, but at the same time a bunch of my friends are in it too so we complain about it together - and once you figure out how to do the problems, it's not too difficult. If you're struggling, you should definitely get help, either from a classmate or the teacher - I can guarantee it will make things WAY easier. Smile

theaterfreak on 12/4/2008 5:21:19 PM

I am in advanced math at my school . . . it's hard, but that is DEFINITLY partly because of my teacher. I get an A though. But it IS tough.

sparklestar4ever12 on 12/4/2008 5:16:02 PM

I'm in 7th grade too and all my friends are taking Algebra, which is actually a 9th grade class. Anyways, I'm one of the few people on our team taking regular Math 7 Honors. It's really easy because it's the same exact thing we learned last year (because i was in an advanced math class last year) but all my friends in Algebra are freaking out because it's soo hard. They're all like failing and now I feel really lucky that I failed the Algebra test. Smile

brunettee on 12/4/2008 4:28:10 PM

its great that ur mom believes in u!
and this way u can keep taking advanced math classes. im in high school honors and i heard that colleges would actually like you to have a C in honors than A in regular cuz it shows u challenge urself.
go in 4 extra help if u need it and find a friend in ur class to study with and help explain things u dont understand.
good luck!
