A Quick Guide to Eating Disorders

Here’s what you need to know about the most common eating disorders:

ANOREXIA NERVOSA

Anorexia nervosa is a potentially deadly eating disorder. The sufferer intentionally starves herself, and is unwilling or unable to keep a healthy weight for her size, height, body type and activity level. She has an intense need for control and is scared of gaining weight even when extremely underweight.

BULIMIA NERVOSA

The bulimic consumes large amounts of food in short periods of time- – sometimes, thousands of calories at one sitting – and then forces herself to purge by throwing up, exercising or using laxatives. After bingeing and purging, a bulimic feels depressed or guilty. Like the anorexic, she is intensely fearful of being fat. Binge-and-purge cycles damage the digestive system and affect major internal organs, like the heart, which can cause death.

COMPULSIVE OVEREATING

The compulsive overeater, usually overweight, eats to excess even when not hungry, but doesn't purge food. The overeater eats throughout the day, not just during binges. Health concerns, similar to people with clinical obesity, include diabetes.

I used to be overweight a few years ago, but recently I've lost weight and I'm now a healthy weight. Even though I'm a healthy weight, I still think I'm fat. When I look the mirror, I see a fat girl. I've started counting the calories that I've been eating. When can I do to not think that I'm fat? I don't want to get an eating disorder.

Think about where you started out, and where you are now- you should be so proud of what you accomplished!! It's up to you to look in the mirror and say to yourself, "Wow! I feel great!!!" Now that you have lost all of the weight, I know you don't want to gain pounds to put you back where you started...but remember, that you can totally have a piece of cake every now and then, and don't spend all of your time counting calories! Make sure you enjoy life, while also trying to stay healthy!

My sister has anorexia. She weighs less than i do and I am 3 years younger then her. Plus she is very tall so it doesn't help. It scares me when I see her. She looks so fragile and scary. When I'm alone I cry about it and I can't get my mind off of her eating disorder. She sees a doctor about it and they say she gains weight but she still doesn't eat enough. It upsets me a lot and I just can't stop crying. When we knew that she was anorexic I drifted away from my family. I wore black and walked around feeling terrible. I got in fights with her constantly. I felt terrible. I lost a best friend. We used to tell eachother everything but her disorder scared me away. I was afraid to touch her like i used to. My dad would never be supportive. I'm just scared about losing my sister. The doctor said her heart shrunk and that was very scary. She always complains of being cold and she is getting sick more. And she never eats enough and when I eat in front of her she says that she doesn't get why I'm always hungry. I'm getting stomach aches from it. Help!

Hey girly, I'm sorry about what you're going through. It sounds like a really tough situation. I think you should ask your parents about seeing a counselor so that you have a way to deal with your feelings. I know this seems like an impossible situation, but you're strong enough to get through it.

By the way, I've been spending all my time thinking about how to hide my food and how to control my hunger. But that hungry feeling almost feels kind of good, you know that it's working. I've become obsessed with calorie-counting in only one day. Trying to be anorexic is the only thing I think about.
I just don't know what to do from here.
Once again, please, please help me!

I can only imagine how tough things are for you. Because we wish you only the best, it’s extremely important that you speak to a trusted adult, such as a family member, doctor, guidance counselor, teacher, etc. I am really concerned for you.

I am 13 years old. I'm somewhere between 4' 11" and 5' and weigh a whopping 142 pounds. I'm so upset and disgusted when I look into the mirror. Naturally being at this age I have been through several bouts of depression. I have struggled with my weight ever since I was born, I come from an overweight family, so obesity is in my genes making it so much harder to lose weight. I have tried every diet -- Nothing works. So yesterday I decided to stop eating. I consumed around 700 - 1000 calories today, and I want to keep cutting that number down. I made up several rituals to help me not to eat, and even made a special bracelet to remind me not to eat. I have so much excess body fat (It's so unhealthy) that I figure it will be good for my body to use up some of it. I feel so guilty after I eat that almost want to throw it all up.
But when my better judgement gets a hold of me, all of this kind of scares me.
Please help. I feel like I need to talk to someone.
Sorry for the long comment.

Hey, not eating will not help you loose weight. You have to eat you should never go a day without eating that is unhealthy. You should work with your doctor, family and a nutritionist to help you design a healthy diet for you and your body needs. It might be helpful also to talk to a trusted adult or a guidance counselor to help you through this difficult time.
