Getting Started

Babysitting for Beginners!

Wanna start looking after little ones but not sure how to break into the babysitting biz? GL babe and babysitting pro Katie Shutt gives you the 411 on how to kick-start your sitting services.

I really want to start babysitting, but I don't know where to start. What do I do?

First thing you should do is make sure you're ready to babysit. Do you feel comfortable being alone at home? Do your 'rents trust you with responsibilities such as using the stove or oven and going on errands by yourself ? Think you can handle basic first aid dilemmas such as cuts and bruises? Babysitting is a big responsibility so you wanna make sure you're up for it! Next step? Finding a fam to sit for.

How do I find a family to sit for?

Word of mouth is usually best. Ask your neighbors, relatives and family friends if they, or someone they know, need a babysitter every once and a while. You don't need to book an everyday kinda gig, since you've prob got a lot goin' on too. Most parents will be thrilled that you've offered a weekend night here and there! Make sure you only ask people that you and your family know. You don't wanna get stuck sitting for a fam that makes you super uncomfortable.

If you don't know the fam you're potentially gonna sit for, get a good recommendation from a previous sitter or whoever pointed you to them.

Not getting very far from word of mouth? Try posting fliers in a familiar place, like a church hall or girl scout gathering room. Try to stay away from posting signs in grocery stores and schools where almost anyone can see it. Just ask as many people as you know, and you're bound to land a babysitting gig eventually!

How much pay should I ask for?

Each family is different, but they probably already have a set price per hour that they are used to paying so they most likely will be up front about the pay. If they ask you how much you want, and you're not really sure what's appropriate, give them a range from low to high and they'll probably pick somewhere in the middle.

When you're talkin' about money, it can feel a little awkward, but you're there to give the 'rents a service, and you deserve to be compensated for it so don't feel bad. Speak up if you think the parents underpaid you at the end of the night. If they can get away with not paying you the full prince just once, they might keep it up which can be really frustrating. So plan out the pay before they leave. Then, make sure it's all there at the end of your gig.

What should I ask the parents before they leave me with the kids?

You def want to ask the important questions before they go because you don’t want to interrupt their dinner to ask a silly question. Make sure you get both of the cell phone numbers, place(s) they're going to be and any emergency numbers. Also, get the bedtime routine down from the parents before the kids can trick ya into staying up an extra hour (or several)! Ask about what snacks they're allowed to eat, if there are any restrictions on TV or the internet and what time the kids go to bed.

When is it OK to call the parents?

Feel like the kid’s behavior is so out of control that you want to pull your hair out? Oh yeah sistah, I've been there. Your best bet to dealing with a kiddie temper tantrum is to keep your cool and remain calm. You might be really tempted to just call the parents and tell them they need to come home because you just can't take it anymore! But kids act out sometimes and there are ways to handle it. Save calling the parents as an absolute last resort.

Just let the child get over the temper tantrum on his own unless he's being very violent or seems like he might hurt himself or someone else. Give it some time and unless you have no other option to calm the kid, don't call the parents.

DO call the parents if one of the kids gets hurt or sick. Little cuts and bruises don't require a call but if it's a serious injury call 911, or get a neighbor and call the parents. If the kid seems very sick and really wants his or her parents, then you can go-ahead give them a call.

If he simply misses mom and dad tucking him into bed, try to distract him with a book instead of calling the 'rents. If you're on the fence about whether you should or not you should ring the ‘rents just give them a quick call. It's not a big deal and the parents will be glad that you're taking such good care of their kids. They’ll bethankful, not mad.

MOD MOD MOD i babysit my little sisters for my parents a lot. right now they dont pay me anything and they say ur payment is ur clothes and stuff like that. i would kinda like to start saving up money for a trip im takin with friends this summer, what do u think would be a fair price per hour seeing that they do buy most of my clothes and stuff thx =]

Hey girlie! Maybe you can ask them for some "allowance" for babysitting and doing some other chores. Explain that you're trying to be responsible and save up for this trip and maybe they'll consider! It's worth a shot!

i got asked to babysit this family with 2 girls
the mom said that one of them would just stay in their room all night, what do i do??
also are there any easy but fun activities for me to do with them, they're in elementary school and this is my first job...what do i do??

Hey girl,

Bring coloring books and games geared toward their age range.  Then, bring stuff to entertain yourself - a book to read, homework to do, etc.  You'll be fine!  And check out our babysitting tips on GL.com for even more ideas Smile

Hey girlie,
With kids that little, they must go to bed pretty early, right? Go to the bathroom right before you head over to babysit them, and try to hold it in until after they go to sleep.Be sure not to drink too much! This way, you won't need to have her in the bathroom with you.

Hey girlie,

The two year old is awake for 12 hours straight? If so, let the parents know about this problem and ask them if they have diapers she could wear while you babysit.

Okay, I have looked for stories or books for little kids so that way when I babysit I can read to them at bedtime and try to get them to sleep. I can't find anything good! I thought about writing my own but I don't know if the kids will like them. Any Ideas??? Thanks!!!!!

Hey girl, how about you make a story up with the kids? Get 'em involved and make the story together. That'll get 'em focused and allow 'em to stay in bed.

Hey new babysitting girls, i hav a few tips 4 you!HERE YOU GO: You should always try 2 arrive a few minutes early- maybe 5, but 10 might be pushing it. When you arrive early you can distract the kiddies while their parents get ready to go to wherever they're going without their kids getting in the way! Also bring some cool things from home that the kids will like to play with so that they don't get bored with their toys. And as soon as they kids go to bed wash the dishes and pick up whatever is out, even if you and the kids didn't get them out- you might get a few extra bucks and they will def want to call you back next time!
good luck! xoxoxoxoSmile

MOD please help
I'm just getting started with babysitting and i have a kinda different situation. There are these two kids that i'm supposed to babysit soon and i'm not sure i can handle it. One is 4 and the other one 2. and the problem is that they only speak french. I go to a french immersion school and speak french pretty fluently, but i'm really nervous. I've only babysat them once before but with my sister, and now she's too busy with work, i'm just sooo unsure about this situation.

Hey babe,

I think you'll be okay. since they're so young you probably don't need  that much french to talk to them. If you're really nervous talk to the parents and see if you can schedule an unpaid playdate with the kids while the parents are around so you can get some practice.

MOD! I am 12 almost 13 and ive taken a corse on babysitting but it seems like nobody needs a sitter theese days. Also my mom thinks im too young. Any ideas?

Hey chica, yep getting any type of job these days is hard. But why don't you start with family. Ask some of your relatives who have young kids if they need a sitter. That's a good place to start because your family knows you best, so once they see you're a responisible babysitter, they can pass the word along to their friends, and you'll be in buisness. Smile

Hey girl,

You should ask your sister if you can pick up some of hers.  Also if she's ever unavailable have her tell them to contact you.  You can also make fliers or business cards to distribute throughout the neighborhood.  This will show people that you're responsible and really interested in getting a job!

I have a married 25 year old sister who is pregnant. YAY! But I'm only 11 and my sister is very pick and everytime i mention babysitting she talk about other babysitters with my mom. HOW can i show my sister i am responsible enoguh that i can take care of the baby with a little help ofcourse?

Hey girl, 11's a little young for babysitting, so I can't blame your sis. Right now you'd be a way great mother's helper though, so start from there and show her how awesome you'll be so when you get old enough, she'll let you be her official babysitter. Don't take her convos personally right now -- most girls don't start babysitting until they're 13 or older.

I would do flyers, but im not sure if dad would agree. What should i do? Thanks(:<3

Hey babe,

Talk to your dad about it and see what he says. He might be okay with it, or at least with you putting up fliers around your school or giving them to your teachers so that you know any clients you might get would be people that you can trust.

Mod Mod Mod We were wondering if you knew how to start a babysitting buisness?

Hey missy, you should start by asking some of your friends to join. Come up with a name and start organizing all the info. Assign jobs to each person (who will answer phones, who will babysit, etc.) After that set up hours and pay for your babysitting group. Decide who works which nights and how much you will charge per hour or per kid. Next, create a flyer with all your babysitting contact info, (phone numbers you can be reached by, address, etc. ) and get the word out by mouth too. Tell your mom and family members to tell their friends who have kids. You should be in buisness in no time soon! Visit our babysitting page for anymore questions ya might have!

Hi Chica,

Play games with them. For babies try things like Peek-a-Boo, singing, dancing with the baby, or hiding stuffed animals throughout the house and looking for them with the baby. For toddlers, try coloring or playing hide and seek.

Hi babe,

Have your parents ask around at work. They might have a coworker looking for a sitter. To earn a bit of cash see if your neighbors need someone to do odd jobs: pulling weeds, walking dogs, etc.

I was planning on starting a baby sitting buisness with my friend, like you guys said. We were both going to go to red cross training today, but my parents both work, there is no one to take me, i lost my cell on vaca at my cousins house, and she still hasnt replied my email on the flyer that i made.
So here are my questions. 1: Do you need training to start babysitting? 2: How should we distribute our flyers? because the street i like on that has no kids besides my family. Door to door seems like the only way beacause i don't know if we have a community bulitten. Help ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey babe,

1. You don't need training, but it's REALLY helpful and parents will be glad you have it, especially parents who might want you use your business but don't know you personally.

2. You can put them in people's mailboxes. Even if they don't have kids, they might know someone who does!

As for your money issue, I would suggest talking to your friends who have babysat before and see how much they get paid.
