Getting Started

Bump Up Biz With Your Buds

Sometimes, babysitting alone isn't enough. You can only find so many houses to sit at on your own. Our solution? Start up a biz with your buds to get more clients!

Get a binder:

The best way to keep your client's information, your salary requirements and the 411 on the kids you babysit for organized is to get a babysitting binder. A good babysitter keeps tabs on all the kids they sit for. When you expand your clientele with your buds, make sure you each have a binder with similar information. Trade contacts with each other. The more contacts you all know, the more money you will be able to make. Sharing your contacts is a great way to network and up your client base!

Network:

By having your buds exchange potential client info with each other, you will be able to network and meet more clients. You and your pals can also create posters and hang them around different schools, community areas and special events (make sure you ask for permission to hang them up first!).  You should also give some of these posters to the families that you already babysit for. By having your buds as a part of your babysitting biz, you guys can pick and share houses. If one of your girls get sick, another chica can easily go in for you and vice versa for any babysitting gig.

Make business cards:

Another way to network? Create business cards. They're fun and easy to make. Type up cards with your position "Babysitter", your contact info (ask your parents for permission before doing this) and a fun slogan such as, "Best babysitter on the block!" It's also eye catching to use an interesting image that shows that you are a fun but responsible babysitter. Find a picture of a baby rattle or of a crying baby cartoon, and put it on your cards as a fun extra. The more business cards you pass out at school, your church or any other activity the more likely you are to bring up business!

By starting up a babysitting biz with your buds, you'll keep everything organized, get more clients AND get to bond with your closest gal pals. You and your chicas get to trade secrets, share stories and can even plan babysitting events together. Good luck with your biz, babes!

OK, so my BFF that I'm starting a babysitting biz with can't get calls on her cell from people outside her network or it costs money! We want to buy her a different cell so she can use it for the biz, but paying the bill cost money, probably lots! Do you have an idea of what we can do? Thanks!

Hey girl, why not try using a home phone? That way it won't add more to the bill and you can always have your 'rents answer it and leave a message. If that won't work, go for an email address you both can share.

GL, that is really awesome advice you got there! That will be really helpful next year! I'm starting a babysitting biz with my BFF and we totally need the help!!! Thank you soo much! I have to wait next year until babysitting classes at the hospital open back up and me and my bestie can take them!
Girlies! I have some great advice you could use! Want to make your biz better known? Make a website! For FREE! What's better than that?! Nothing!!

No links, please, but that's a great idea girlie.

What do 1 1/2 year olds like? i'm going to babysit one and he really likes book? anything else thats' notable?

MOD! i took my babysitting course a year ago. i haven't babysat yet. but i am scared that i don't know what to ask the parents. i was offered to babysit one night but i chickened out. I don't know how to ask the parents qur=estions and the setails on their kids. PLZ HELP!!!

Hey chica, the parents will probably be happy to hear you ask questions about their kids. They want to know that their babysitter, is going to really take care of their child, so the more questions you ask the better!

MOD I'm 11 and I'm red cross certified by no one has asked me to babysit their kids. Am i too young?

Hey babe,

I think you still might be a little young, though getting certified will definitely help you get jobs in a few years!

hey mod, im trying to start babysitting but i dont know how to get any clients! I've tried to get my mom to talk to people she knows, but they already have a babysitter or a system worked out with their relatives. I dont feel comfortable posting a flier with my name and info, is there any other way i can get a client??? thx, much love xoxo

Hey girl! You can make fliers and then hand them out at places you are familiar with and where the families have seen you before. For example, if you go to a pool, hand out some fliers there. Or, if you go to church or Synagogue, pass out some fliers there too. These places have a ton of families, and while you may not know all of them, they aren't strangers at least!

i want to start babysitting to earn a little extra koney and plus i love kids but the rents wont even let me stay home alone.i doubt they would let me babysit! Im pretty sure i can handle it im 13 already! what to do? plz help!

Hey girl!  If your parents don't let you stay home alone, they may not be so fond of a babysitting idea.  Try sitting down and chatting with them to explain how you're trying to be responsible and make your own money.  If they're still not into the idea, try babysitting while one of the parents is home but working.  That way, you can help them out, make some cash, and have an adult available in case of an emergency.  best, Kristen

I'm 13 and babysitting certified through the red cross. I really want a babysitting job but don't know where to find one. My parents won't let me put something up at our library because they don't want my information out for everyone to see and they also don't want me in strangers homes. Do you have any advice on getting a babysitting job. I could really use the cash and i love kids!

MOD MOD MOD!!! I've been babysitting for a while and now have a summer gig on Wendsdays for my neighbors. One of the girls is going through major probs lately and has some BIG anger issues- against her little sister! She gets right up in her face and screams at her, says that she wants to strangle her, and doesn't get why I have to spend most of my time over there with her baby sister- when she's only two years old! Now I'm scared that if I leave them both in a room alone for even a minute, the older sister might REALLY hurt her baby sister. What should I do???

Hey girl,

First you should let their rents know what's going on! Keep the two of them in the room with you, so you can keep a close eye on them.

My bff and I want to babysit together. We were thinking of writing a paragraph or somthing on why it is easier to have two babysitters and give it to parents when we give them our resume. Do you think the parents will like that???

Hey girl, that should totally work out because it gives them the security that their children will get extra attention. Go for it! <3 Jeannie

I'm sorry if I've asked this before, but I can't find where I asked this question! Anyway, I am a babysitter and I advertise a ton. I have business cards, sent out gallons of fliers, have a really low price, I'm CPR certified, and all that good stuff. The only prob is, I have a 14 year old sister, and she gets ALL of my business! She barely even advertises! Whenever I answer the phone I hear, "Hi, I'm Mrs. ****. **** and ****'s mom. Could I speak to your sister?" and once again, she gets a fabulous babysitting job that sprouts into a regular costumer. She doesn't even have business cards, or fliers, or advertising at all!
ALL OF THE JOBS STOLEN BY MY SISTER!

Hey Girl, sounds like you should talk to your sister about this, and ask her to split her jobs with you! *Cara T*

I took a babysitting class last summer and got certified by the red cross, but it still hasn't helped me get any gigs. I don't know anyone with a child that doesn't already have an older sibling to babysit, how can i get a [at least] one night job? I'm kind of shy sooo.... yeah any ideas?

why not try a publicity flyer to get your name out there? or ask your mom or family friends to start asking around and refer you to people who could use your help--families are great networking resources! good luck out there!

Hey can any one help me? I have two older sisters, and every time some one call for a babay sitter, my sisters get the job. I love little kids, and my parents gave me one family that was all mine, every time they called. They called twice last year, and not since! Help me get a job!!! ps check out m profile and comment! I give advice!!

Hey babe, networking is key! Ask your neighbors, relatives, anyone your parents know! People can always use a sitter.

i want a summer job to keep me busy this summer and to make some extra money. so i was thinking i could have one week in the summmer where i could have my own arts and craft day camp in my naighborhood for all the kids i baby sit for but im only 13 how can i manage?
thanks,
molly

Hey girl,

That sounds like a great idea! It seems unlikely that you'll be able to run a whole camp though, so enlist your friends that are home--get your other babysittin' buds to come help you out. You'll have to share the profits, of course, but you'll be able to take care of more kids so it'll even out.
