Home Alone: Fight the Fright!

Here's the sitch: The kids are all tucked into bed but there's still two hours 'till the parents pull back into the driveway. You've never been to their house before and you're a li'l uncomfy 'cause it's dark, quiet AND there aren't many neighbors around. You feel scared for no reason, you jump at every noise and...you kinda wanna cry!

Sound familiar? Don't worry babe, we've got some ways to help ya fight the fright!

1. Easy on the overreactions, sistah!

When you're in a strange house all alone it can be easy to jump to conclusions and convince yourself that you're hearing a super scary robber outside. Instead of freaking out, take a deep breath and THINK the situation through. You're new to the house, so it makes perfect sense that you're gonna be a li'l nervous.

Once the parents leave make sure all the doors and windows are locked and curtains and shades are pulled down. When the kids are asleep just try your best to stay occupied.

2. Next-door security

If the parents don't already do this, make sure they leave a number of a neighbor they know well and trust before they head out for the night. It's unlikely that you'll need to call them but just having some digits you can dial will make you feel tons better.

If you hear a weird noise or see something suspicious you can give the peeps next door a call and see if they know what's up. Also, if the neighbors know you're sitting they'll probably be more alert.

3. Have Mom and Dad on stand-by

As always, tell your parents when you'll be sitting and make sure they have the address and phone number of the house. Let them know what time the kids go to bed and say you'll give them a ring then.

You'll feel way more comfy knowing your parents are keeping an ear out for you. Come up with a system, like calling them every half hour or so after the kiddies are asleep.

4. Tune in...to tune out

Turn on the TV. Make sure the volume isn't up too loud...(wouldn't wanna wake the sleeping kiddies!). Put the tube on to to keep you occupied. Even if you wanna catch up on some reading, have the TV on low as background noise.

It's easy to jump at every creek 'n' crack when you're all alone. So, distract yourself with a movie (not a scary one of course!). Whether you're laughing it up at a comedy or swept away in a romantic film, you'll be waaay less likely to hear and (over-think!) the bumps in the night.

5. Call one of your chicas

Once you're sure the kids are asleep (quietly check on them just t make sure!) give one of your gals a call. Listening to Lauren talk about her super crush on Tom will be way relaxing...and maybe even get you giggling. This is even better if you have a pal who is also babysitting that night.

Make sure you're still around where the kids can find you if they wake up from a scary dream. Keep an ear out for any probs the babes might have...and go upstairs to check up on them every once in a while.

And remember...

If you're unsure or your gut is really telling you something might be wrong don't hesitate to call a neighbor, your clients, your parents or even 911. In most cases, don't sweat it, chica. Everything will be fine. So, take a deep breath and be confident, babe.

mod Hey what do you do when a child cant sleep because they want their mommy? I babysat one girl that wanted her mommy so she stayed up for 3 hours waiting for her. I felt so bad Frown

Hey girl! Sometimes kids just want their mom. Sit with her and comfort her. Try reading to her to take her mind off missing her mama so much and she might calm down enough to doze off!

I have been babysitting for like 3 years and I still sometimes freak out when everyone is asleep! I just always keep the TV on and when I need it I call my mom to talk to! There is nothing wrong with admitting that you're scared or that you need help.

luv2smile1394 on 11/19/2009 10:36:44 AM

vdog96 on 11/18/2009 8:17:15 PM

Anyone who's afriad, don't be! I've had to stay in a new house overnight, and yeah its really scary! but just ignore all the things that scare you, and babe you'll be fine. Smile

coffeeforever445 on 10/18/2009 5:01:20 PM

The only people I babysat are my brothers, my stepdad's kids, and occasionally my cousins. I'm starting to get in the buisness though. My brohan's friend's mom asked me if I could babysit her 10 month old and three year old sometime. I said yes, but I freaked! I haven't been around a little baby for, like 3 years!!!!

Any advice?

shopbballbri on 10/6/2009 10:42:43 PM

This is totally great for me! surely, I'll keep that in my mind when I start babysitting.

glamourgirl107 on 8/27/2009 2:46:39 PM

iwas babysitting one might and kept hearing freaky noises so i shut all of the blinds and made shure the doors were locked and i was freaking out a little and when the parents came home they were like "guys come outside there are some fireworks" i went out side with them and shure enough there were fireworks

mimishumidude on 8/6/2009 9:27:34 PM

im going to take classes this fall.Smile

anne1095 on 7/29/2009 10:31:03 PM

When I get nervous babysitting I normal turn on some lights in and around the room I'm in and then I text my friends as I watch T.V.

krox27 on 7/1/2009 7:56:37 PM

The first time i was babysitting I was 11 and I got totally freaked!!(It didn't help that the 10 year old who was going to hang out with me while her parents went out and help with the kids kept insisting she heard a car door slam and then a voice at the window.) But once we started talking about the extreme measures we (wouldn't) take if there was a robber, it all seemed too far-fetched to be serious.

Maddie22Lou on 6/23/2009 1:51:52 PM

I totally agree with this article. if you're freaked out, the best thing to do is just TUNE IT OUT!!! Def turn on the TV, and have your celly within reach just in case you get nervous. Talking to friends like the article said really helps too, it makes you feel safer. And don't worry, after a few times in a house alone, you'll get over it! It happens to everybodySmile

Shopaholic923 on 6/7/2009 2:32:33 PM

The first time a babysat one of my neighbors it was like hurricane hannah and tree limbs were falling down all over the place! The third time i sat for them i was w/ my friend but we started hearing loud booms and we thought it was guns but it was really fireworks.

mtsnow12 on 5/28/2009 7:11:04 PM

I really want to babysit but im scared about stuff like this!

frostybunny9 on 5/24/2009 7:15:40 PM

When i baby sit and put the kids to bed i read them a story and sit in their room untill the parents get home... atleast i'm not alone

tmj228 on 5/21/2009 3:17:04 PM

like this is bad guys! What do i do??? I babysit kids that are my lil sis's friends-she has them over to play alot. (2 boys, ages 5 n 8) the older one told my sister he HATED ME! and whenever he comes over he makes comments like "bridgette's a whitch" or "your sister's scary" and tons of other mean stuff! It makes me feel bad because i have no idea what i did wrong! I don't think i was a bad babysitter! The mom still asks me to babysit but i feel weird. Help!

stargate87 on 5/20/2009 4:47:51 PM

suebird on 4/14/2009 10:45:29 AM

good point cg1304 they would be so P.Od if u ran up their phone bill LOL

silhouette97 on 4/13/2009 4:38:20 PM

tip #5 is good advice, but you should probably chat it up on your cell, not the client's phone, 'cause you don't want to run up their phone bill or miss their call home to check on things

cg1304 on 4/13/2009 11:41:49 AM

Haha I was like that at first. Sadly though, the kid kept waking up and trying to prank me. It didn't work out that well, and I locked him in his room. Heh...
