When will I get my period? I need to know!

Check these out, too...

  • Pad prob! How do I get them from my locker to the bathroom?
  • Have a happier period--yes, really!--with our playlist
  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?
  • What stinks down south?
Most girls get their first period around 11 or 12. However, some girls get their period as early as 9, and some as late as 16. The truth is, every girl is different. But we can assure you that, sooner or later, you will almost definitely get it.

Q: Once I get it, how will I know when it’s coming next?

A: For the most part, girls get their periods every 28 days or so. While some can predict the exact day of their next period, other girls have irregular cycles and may be off by a week or more. You may be even more irregular when you first start getting your period, skipping a whole month or two. This is perfectly normal—nothing to panic over. Says Jerry, 12, “When you first start getting it, you can never predict when it might strike. I once got mine twice in one month.”

Q: I’m terrified I will be caught totally off guard. What can I do?

A: This is the extreme fear for girls. Says Kristi, 10, “I always hear about girls going to dances in white dresses and walking out with a big red spot!” First of all, of the hundreds of letters we received, only three girls said they were busted in public with a surprise stain.

But, OK, there’s certainly a fair chance you’ll be surprised at least one prepped. Keep a few pads in your locker and a sweater you can wrap around your waist, just in case. Our readers also say they keep spares for friends, which is a smart (and generous) idea.

Hey girl, just ask your mom to schedule an appt with the doctor for you. Or ask her when your next yearly check up is. Jiae K.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!! I talked to my mom about my spotting. She just said if it stopped than its fine. But i still want to go to a doctor to talk about when i'll get my period. I know they can check you and stuff and get a pretty good idea, because i want to know. But i don't think she'd take me to a doctor. How do i tell her I want to???

Hey, Girl! Sorry for the “stock” message. We’re psyched you’re here but since this is a super busy time, mods aren’t able to answer personal advice or contest questions. We’re approving your comments now so the girls can start offering feedback right away! If you still have questions, please come back, we’re happy to help…or just let the other chicas answer now! (They give awesome advice, trust us!) Love and thanks!

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!!!!!! I know my mom wouldn't mind answering my questions about my spotting, but I'd be embarrassed to start a conversation... what do i say to start it??? Last time when i told her about my discharge situation, i just texted her about it.

Hey, just take a deep breath and ease into the conversation. Tell her your general concerns first, about your period and such, and then get more specific as you start to feel more comfortable. There's no need to be embarrassed, she'll want you to ask her questions about these things. Good luck!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!! I noticed some spotting yesterday... how do i talk to my mom about it??? how do i get the conversation started??? I want to go see a doctor and talk to them about when I'll get my period, so how do I tell her that too???

Hey girl, don't worry your mom is a woman too and she'll probably be more than happy to answer your questions. Tell her your concerns and she'll probably have a good idea if you should talk to a doctor or not. Good luck!

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I noticed the tiniest 2 dots of blood yesterday. I've never had my period before. Is this spotting or my period?? If it is spotting, is that a sign my period is VERY close?????????????????????????

Hey girl, it's hard to tell. This could possible be spotting meaning that you may get your period soon, but it could also be just a preview far in advance. Talk to your mom, or you doctor about this because they may have more information. Good luck!
