My Period Makes Me Sick!

I always dread getting my period because it makes me throw up. Why does this happen? And will it ever stop?

As if having your period weren’t fun enough. “Vomiting can happen because of painful cramps or hormonal changes that come with the onset of your period,” says gynecologist Dr. Paula Adams Hillard, director of women’s health at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Dr. Hillard suggests checking with your doc first to make sure it’s OK for you to take an over-the-counter medicine, like ibuprofen (Advil, Nuprin, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve), to help relieve symptoms. She recommends taking the medicine with food at the first sign of cramping or nausea.

And don’t stop taking it until your period ends, even if you’re feelings better. If that doesn’t help, make an appointment with your doctor.

okayy, so i've had my period for maybe about 3 years? whenever i have my period, i get sick. and i mean really sick. i'm in bed, dizzy, pale, feel like i'm going to throw up, and i have to miss school. my cramps are extremely bad too. ibprofen doesn't really help that much. i don't know what to do anymore, so i'm always dreading my period. any tips to how i can feel better???

Hey babe, A friend of mine used to have the same problem and going on birth control really helped her. Talk to your parents or your doc about it and see what they think.

SORRY I BET YOU HAVE HEARD THIS QUESTION ALOT! just yesterday i got my period and tommorow is Mon. and i have school! im really scared something will happen and i will be embarrased and unprepared! what should i do? i know i can put tampons,pads,liners, and etc. in my binder but im scared that when i take it out of there someone will see! I've had my "." since Jan or Feb of this year, and I still rarely get it red. I know it's not becasue I don't change my pads or anything enough b/c when i use tampons its still brown. Is this normal? My mom said it was. BTW my "." lasts about 4 or 5 days and i never need more than a reg. pad even on heavy days. Thanks for helpin even though this is a weird ?

that sucks.
i've never thrown up and i don't really get bad cramps exept for one time i felt really sick and seriously thought i would. i was miserable and it lasted all day.
don't ask me why i didn't take any tylonal or somthing. i just wasn't thinking straight i guess

please help okay well i got my period in july but then i started sports so i didn't get it till this month but when i first got this month i would only bleed once a day and not very much at all but three days after i started bleeding this month my flow came all throughout the day so would you count the beginning part as part of my period or is it spotting???

Hey chica, your period stops in the water but not at night. Some girls actually have heavier flows at night than during the day.

Alot of girl or women have told me that when you are about to start your first period you get signs for example: PMS (bloating,cramps, mood swings,etc.)VAGINAL DISCHARGE!.I know this is true but some also say you also get dizzy, breaths hurtalso they harden and soften, diarreah and lose appetite,stomach hurt when you go to the restroom, IS THIS TRUE? I still dont start my first period so i have to be prepared and alerted!

Those symptoms can happen to some women but not all. Just keep your eye out for things that feel different and carry a pad with you whenever you can.

TOTALLY! I have never barfed when I get my period, but about a month ago I had KILLER cramps and I couldnt move. It hurt sooo bad!

Once when I was on my period I really thought I was going to throw up! It was awful, but I didn't. Sometimes that happens to me. I would just drink a lot of water and maybe lie down for a few minutes.

Ugh, that sounds terrible! That sometimes happens to my friend, and she's even had to miss a couple days from school because of it. But it usually doesn't get that bad for her.

My periods are so wierd.i have had my period for about a year.iam elevan and most girls my age just need regular tampons but i will only have a tampon in for about 2hours and it will be super+ and it will still leak.Whats wrong with me?

Hey babe, that's not weird at all. Tons of girls have heavy flows, especially in the first few days on their periods. Use a pad as back up in addition to the tampon. Check with your doc though to be sure everything is ok.

OMG, that happened to me a few hours ago! I started mine this morning, and I had the cramps as usual. Then they got worse and I laid face-down on my bed for an hour straight. Then I had to go to the bathroom, and after doing my business, I sat there for a minute, swallowing back vomit. And, yes... my cramps are really bad like that every time.

I dealt with the same thing for a few years. This past year my mom and I were both fed up with it, so I went to my doc. and got put on birth control. If nothing else helps, birth control is really effective.

It also helps with acne and if you're really moody like myself. =)

it will come soon i promise! you have to be patient, though. because all of our bodies are so different there is never any guarantee of when your period is going to decide to show up. it will though!

my 1st period was 5 months before my 2nd one. My 1st one was pretty light and lasted 9 days. Then for my 2nd one it was extremely light (almost no blood) and only lasted like 5 days. am i just really lucky? what is going on?

It does sound like you're one of the lucky chicas who don't have heavy periods! As for the timing, your period can be pretty irregular the first year or so--it'll probably start coming more frequently.

If it's making you sick I wouldn't keep using them. Just wait a couple months until you're more used to your period and try again. Some brands do sells tampons made specifically for teens, you could try that. Talk to your mom about it, she'll be able to help!

Hey babe, I would wait to try them again until you're more comfortable with the idea. Physically they shouldn't make you sick so it's probably a mental thing. Stick with pads until you're ready.

Blahhh! I feel for ya girl! I dont throw up, but I get cramps so bad I'm incapacitated (cant move w/o screaming!!) I HAVE to take Advil the whole time I'm on mine! Even though it reduces the flow down to almost nothing! It drives me insane! Cuz one minute it will be super heavyy and the next barely there!!
