Is it safe to wear a tampon overnight?

 
Unless you sleep 15 hours straight, there's no reason you can't. "It's totally safe to leave a tampon in overnight," says New York gyno Dr. Elizabeth Eden. She suggests changing the tampon just before bed and right after waking up.
 
The fear surrounding tampons has to do with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a potentially fatal disease in which the tampon traps bacteria and releases poisonous toxins into the bloodstream. "TSS is really rare and is associated with very super absorbent tampons which have been taken off the market, or wearing tampons longer than overnight," notes Dr. Eden. Sweet dreams!

This is slightly awkward .. but i have "heavy flow" sometimes and I was wondering if I can leave a tampon in overnight if i have this issue right now !

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD Hey! I am only 12 and have only had my period since January (2011), and I absolutely LOATHE sleeping in a pad. Do you think it would be ok to sleep in a tampon, or should I wait till I'm older? My mom doesn't really care if I do or not, but I am afraid that I might get TSS. Thank you!!

 

 

Hey chickadee! You can only leave tampons in for 8 hours at a time. That being said, you can sleep in them, but you have to make sure you'll get up in the middle of the night, or early in the morning, to switch your tampon. Leaving it in longer than 8 hours increases your chance of getting TSS.
