Pads vs. Tampons

Uh, tampons? Im gonna put what up where?!

OK, you probably already know what a tampon looks like—a white, cotton cylinder with a long string dangling from the bottom (that plastic or cardboard contraption you see once you remove the wrapper is the applicator and is not meant to stay inside your vagina!).

So, like, where does it go and how does it get there? Well, the idea of pushing a tampon into your vagina to soak up the flow seems totally gross at first. And it will definitely feel unusual the first time you do it. But tampons are super easy to use, stay in place and are really the safest way to protect your clothes from your period—especially if you’re into sports, like swimming.

Specific directions are on the box and, honestly, it’s completely painless. Once you’ve got it inside of you, the string hangs out so you can gently pull it out and replace it every four to six hours, depending on your flow. Best of all, you will hardly even notice it’s there.

MOD MOD MOD I have asked my mom about using tampons but she told me i had to wait until i was 15 because thats how old she was when she started using them. The difference is i started mine when i was eleven and she started hers when she was 14. I've had my period for almost two years now and thats even longer then she had hers before she started using tampons. What's the big deal about them? Why wouldn't my mom want me to use them?

Hey girl! Not sure on that one! You'll have to talk to her and find out. Sit her down and really talk about why you want to and why she doesn't want you to. You two might be able to come to a compromise!

I started my period in jan. of this year. and i am affaid it will start to stink in class and i don't want to be known as the smelly one can you give me any advice? PLEASE HELP?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Hey girlie,

Remember, every girl gets her period sooner or later, so you aren't the only one in your class dealing with this issue. If you are not comfortable with trying tampons (which are less likely to smell), its totally possible to use a pad and still not stink! For tips on keeping you period stink-free, check out this article from Periods, Period : http://www.girlslife.com/post/2009/05/27/03-Period-Advice.aspx

Okay so i have undies that are a reddish pink and when i wear a pantyliner the underwear color somehow gets on the liner and looks like i spotted i mean i wash them but.....help!

Hey girlie,

Sometimes, clothing with really vivid colors still hangs on to a lot of its dye.  Just try to keep washing them and hopefully it will wash out in a little while.  If not, it's ok because you know they act that way - you can be prepared if you see the spots again!

i like swimming but im not a swimmer; so i was wondering when you swim (if you wear a tampon) wouldnt it get wet because your suit gets wet(well mine does)?also what does spotting mean because i have had a few red spots in my underwear and i just started my period like a week ago is this ok?

Hey girl! Your tampon won't get wet. Spotting is just when you see a little bit of blood occassionally.

THANKS SOOOO MUCH Smile

Hey babe! Try talking to her one-on-one and letting her know that it means alot to you! Let her know that it will help with your active life style, but you're worried about using them for the first time! She'll be happy to help you and happy you asked.

Hi ive had my period for about 8 months but so far only 4 times. I know like u get 1 billion questions but i wouls be really thankful if u could help me!! I want to try using Tampons and all my friends use them and say there awsome but idk how to bring up the convo?THANKS Smile

Hey babe! I'm guessing bring up the convo w/ your mom or parent?  Just let your mom know that you think it would be easier for when you're active to use tampons. They don't slide around and are more comfortable than wearing a pad.  For the first couple years of your period it's normal to have an irregular flow, but after a year you should go to the doctor to try and see if you can get your flow on a regular schedule.
Megan R.

graceygirl77 on 2/23/2010 8:30:04 PM

I don't have my period yet but I have a few questions...
1) I play basketball, soccer, lacrosse, run track, I'm gonna do field hockey next fall and I love to swim. Would tampons be easier if I play all those sports?
2) I keep seeing white in my underwear whenever I go to the bathroom lately. Does that mean I'm gonna get my period soon or is something wrong or is that normal?
3) My sister didn't get her period til she was 16. Does that mean I won't have mine til later?

Hey babe ! Yes tampons are great for when you play sports.  The white is most likely discharge. It is completely normal to have a year or two before your period.  You could get yours later like your sister, or you may get it a little earlier.  All girls are different, but if the majority of women in your family got theirs later, it's likely you will too.

icybridge on 2/23/2010 5:19:12 PM

Im really scared because I dont want it to smell but i dont want scented because i heard it can cause skin irritation and i have been allergic to some perfumes..... or should i just go with pads? But then again my problem is SCENTED VS. UNSCENTED! help please!

pinkplatypus12 on 2/19/2010 6:20:01 PM

Hi. I'm only on my second period and everyone tells me that tampons are so great. I hate pads. They're so annoying and loose their stickiness. Should I use them?

Hey babe! You could always try them and see if they're for you or not! Everyone is different and has different preferences.
Megan R.

elita on 2/16/2010 8:36:09 PM

Hey girls i was just like you about a year ago
There is nothing to be scared of.. If you just relax when your putting it in it wont hurt at all if you have any questions you can message me and ask for help.

I know talking to your mom is almost as scary as doing it on your own but she knows what your going through and she will understand. Smile

9Mia on 2/15/2010 9:05:40 PM

I've had my period for about a year now and I've been using pads. I put a tampon in for the first time (without my mom knowing) and I soaked through it right away!(i mean like a few minutes) I don't have a very heavy flow so it's not because of that, but why did it leak??

sarahrocker on 2/12/2010 4:31:28 PM

MOD is it safe to put in a tampon when your not on your peroid?

Hey girlie,

We wouldn't recommend it.  When you're on your period, it makes it easier to slide the tampon in/out and it gives it a reason for it to be there.  Without that, it would HURT.  There's no reason to use it when you're not on your period, so stay away from that.

xxxEmilyxxx<3 on 2/12/2010 11:05:33 AM

i thought i was gonna have my period but it turns out that i had mild food poisoning lol it hurt so much then i felt better lol

Ladybug863 on 2/10/2010 11:06:11 PM

*****MOD**** r pads comfy? and r there any particular brands that u would recommend? THX! ~C

I suggest pads that have "wings".  The wings are flaps that have stickys on the ends to wrap around your underwear.  Some people don't like them because they feel more like a "diaper" and you can feel them more...but I think they're good because they are sure to stay in place.  I know it won't slip if I move around.  It's all about personal preference! Try different styles out and find what YOU like Smile

I thought i have been having discharge for a year but now i realize(idk) that i have had it for like almost 2 years in april, is that a big sign or what? i also have been getting worse cramps and my cravings are bad, headaches and a bloated feeling, moodswings etc. plus whenever i tell mom something, my brother is listening at the door i cant get him to stop!

Hey babes, all of those symptoms only happen a  few days before your period. They arent things you have for years. Discharge is more of a biological cleaning mechanism than a direct indication that youre getting your period. Ask your doc, they can probably give you a better estimate. xo JANA
