The Problem is Me!

Drama with dancing

I take ballet class at a really good and expensive studio. That's the only class that I take and I am not even that good although I have been dancing since I was four. I'm also the oldest in my class at thirteen and am going to high school next year where two of my friends, who are extremely good dancers, made the dance team and are leaving the studio.

Also, taking ballet and just ballet is considered dorky at my school so only my friends really know.  I'm not ashamed of it but I don't really advertise it. Lately I have been thinking about quitting dance because one: I am not that good, two: it might be too much for me in high school, three: I already play the flute and am in band so I have something else on my plate, four: It is considered dorky, and five: I am not as interested in dance like I was when I was seven.

My mom is pressuring me to keep going to dance because it keeps me healthy and fit (I used to be heavier but since I took dance I have lost weight). So right now I don't know what I should do. Could you please help me?!

-too much to handle

Hey, too much to handle – I know what you're going through! I'm a dancer, too, so I understand the stress of doing dance, balancing school schedules, and making everyone think what you're doing isn't dorky. To make it NOT too much to handle, let's take everything one step at a time.

Quitting dance altogether is a big decision, so make sure it's the right one for you. Don't decide one way or the other because of how you compare yourself to other people, do it because of the way it makes YOU feel. If you love it, stick with it! If you think it's not making you very happy anymore (or at all), it might be time to find another hobby that does.

High school is a big change from junior high/middle school. New people, new classes, bigger homework loads. Whew. It can be overwhelming! So start slow...depending on what you decide about problem number one, maybe you could cut back on the amount of time you spend at dance class to make sure you have enough homework time. I always liked going to ballet class because it was a huge stress relief for me! Take into consideration all the time you'll want to be spending on flute practice - sounds like you like playing a lot.

If you do decide to drop dance, explain to your mom exactly why, and make a plan to keep healthy and fit that works with your new high school/flute schedule. You could tell her you'll join a less-demanding sport, do workout videos in your own living room or go on regular runs. She'll want to know that you're seriously thinking about keeping in shape.

It's your decision, girlie. Make sure it's the right one for YOU!

Good luck!

You keep taking dance so you can go on toe shoes. I should getting on toe shoes soon because my teacher said my feet are getting stronger every day.

I am worried my orthodonist is messing up my teeth. Everytime i get a bracket off they use this thing to scrape my teeth clean. It leaves terrible scratch marks on my teeth. I had to get chains off my teeth and the assistant yanked them off. literally just pulling them off. I think she even took off a layer of my tooth leaving it uneven. Once i had to have a lazer prosedure and the assitant didn't put enough nummer on so i felt the entire thing and couldn't say anything because everyones hand was in my mouth. I can't deside if it is the orthidontist or i am just geting the worst assitants. I hate to have my parents yell at the Othidontist when it isn't his fault

Hey babe,

I think most of what you described is pretty normal but if you're really worried ask your parents if you can try another orthodontist and see if it's any better.

i do dance, soccer, and balance school i know how hard it can be but if you love doing it dont stop if you have more than one class try cutting back (i take like 16 dance classes its crazy but i love it)

i have been dancing since i was really young dance is like my thing, Ballet i certintly most important and since you have been taking it for so long it might show up in a jazz or lyrical dance maybe you could give something else a try.

dancer4eva10 on 7/3/2009 11:01:36 AM

i've been dancing for 10 or 11 years now. i used to do tap jazz and ballet but now i just focus more on ballet....and ballet is soo not dorky!! if ppl think it is, tell them how hard it really is!! i would suggest not to quit, but if u really want to, then do it.

aerogurly1987 on 7/1/2009 5:00:22 PM

omg...that used to be my life story

dont worry you'll get better nd be able to move up to your age group level..you should ask ur teacher what u need to work on so you can move up.

ive been under lots of stress and havent been feeling great, (friends and guys and everything.) its getting so bad that i cant force myself to eat anything, it gives me a stomachache and im never hungry. i feel like i cant do anything to change whats happening! i dont know what to do and i cant tell my mom cuz she just tells me to suck it up and deal. ??

Hey girl, it's important to know that you're totally in charge of yourself. If something is getting you down, you have the power to step back and remove yourself from the situation. You can't avoid your probs forever, of course, but you can take some time for yourself to think it all over. Never let anyone feel like your feelings aren't validated, either. Try doing some things that make you feel calm, or try writing out your feelings in a journal. Seeing them on paper might help you assess them better, and you can start feeling better, too. Good luck, babes. ~Alexa

thanks! but what can I do to calm down? I'm up till midnight! UH! this isn't me!!!

Hey Girlie,  Try doing things to take your mind off of things and calm you down.  Try watching some cartoons, a fun movie, reading by candle light or taking a hot bath.  But make sure to find someone you trust to start venting to, that will help a ton.  XOLori

can you feel dizzy from not eating healthy food or enough food?

Hey babes, YOu can def get dizzy from not eating, food is your bodies fuel.  Plus when you don't eat it slows your metabolisim and makes you gain weight.  Set up your meals and snacks and bring stuff with you to munch on during the day thats healthy.  XOLori

lately I feel depressed or stressed out. I don't know why. I'm usually a happy, healthy girl. I freak out about everything about my health. I think the worse thing possible. Help! I'm not me! going to middle school the first year was a little sressful but the year is over why do I feel like this?

Hey babes, If you're stressing a lot then its prob just starting to show on the outside.  Find a trusted adult or counselor and vent about it a few times until after school starts and you're comfortable.  XOLori

omg im just like that except with piano...I am 12 and have been playing for 8 years and even my closest friend makes fun of me for it because she recently quit piano because she hated to practice. Also I just went to a pipe organ camp-it was really hard-and my friend came to the recital at the end of the week and the whole time she was like "omg i don't want 2 b here" and I was kind of annoyed at that cuz it was like she didn't HAVE to come...i don't really care though cuz she's not being a good friend anymore lately. When I was at the camp I met some good friends and then came home and was like wow this isn't a good friend here. Frown I hate all this friend drama...

emypig on 6/26/2009 10:30:08 PM

this happened to me a couple years ago. i wanted to stop dance because nobody else did it or liked it. but now, a couple years later, i LOVE it and its the main activity i do. think about it: is it really that YOU dont like it, or OTHER people dont like it, that makes you want to quit? i still struggle with some people (even my friends) that say, "why do you do ballet?" and stuff like that. and i just reply "because i like it! do you have a problem with that?". but if its to much of a workload and you REALLY dont like it, id quit. follow your heart, its your decision babe! good luckSmile

I've been dancing for almost 11 years! Dancing is the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm on the dance teams and things so I don't consider myself bad and neither should you! Just because you THINK you are bad at something, doesn't mean you should just quit it ; same with other people thinking it's dorky. I take all styles of dance and alot of people think it's dorky but if they saw u dance and really saw how hard ballet is and how beautiful it is, they would know it wasn't dorky. If you really believe you already have enuff going on w/ band and stuff then thats fine, cut dance out, but don't quit just cuz of what other ppl think and say and that u think ure not very good at it! =] Good luck w/ everything! I've taken dance since I was three. I started out w/ ballet and tap, but since then I've taken on jazz and hip hop and I think I wanna try out lyrical. I love dance to death and I quit soccer and basketball so I could do more dance. I wanna try out for cheerleading when I go into jr. high. I need help! Ok im totally in love with my bgf! And I think he might like me to! We eat lunch together and we talk to each other all the time and the best part is its not always me who has to start the conversations! Ok so he is nice to everyone but he treets me like xtra special sometimes like we were beaing dumb and playing around and he made me princess of our stupid little thing we were doing. And he made everyone els pesents! Haha it made me feel special! But when ever one of the mean girls is around he starts freeking out and gets all nervous and ‘tryes’ to act cool and It makes me feel bad… like he dosent want me around when they are there… so should I say something about it? Or see if he gets better? Or what?!?!?!?!?

Hey babe,

He's probably just insecure and uncomfortable around them. He will probably realize soon that he would rather be with someone he feels comfortable with than with someone he feels like he can't be himself around. You can tell him this or you can wait for him to figure it out on his own.

I used to be in ballet jazz hip-hop tap and lyrical. It was getting really spendy and I really didn't enjoy it that much. It is really hard to let go after you have done something for a while, but before you make a move, consider how your life will be if you quit, or if you stay dancing. Hope this helps ladies!

Speaking of drama with dance, today at dance class I made a complete fool out of my self. Lets just say that the teacher is kinda intimidating, the music was loud, and I mumble a lot. is there any way i can get over this? I know this is kinda dumb but it kinda freaked me out today. Thanks

Hey babe,

sorry to hear it, but all you can do is laugh about it! Imagine it happened to someone else or in a movie - would you think it was funny? Well, this one embarrassing incident was just a movie of who you were at your last dance class and at your next one you're going to be a completely different, confident person. If anyone brings up what happened, just think about it like that movie scene and laugh. Eventually, you'll be able to really see the humor in the situation, but until then, just keep going to class and focus on being confident!

i got a cell phone with texting for doing well in school this year. i'm 14 going into 9th grade. the phone is wonderful except for one thing, my brother who is 11 is allowed to text his friends. i do not think it is fair at all! this was my gift for doing good, he got a skateboard. my parenets allow it, and they tell me that he can't do it at all. then they tell him he can do it occasionally! what should i do? please help me?! thank you!

Hey babe,

Try to set up a sched with your brother so he isn't always using your phone. You should definitely get priority - it's your reward after all! - but there's no harm in sharing. Your parents will appreciate you being mature about it and will probably reward you again soon.

Wow! That's surprising.
Although at my elementary school only my BFFs did dance, at my middle school a lot of girls went to my studio, so everyone just went with it.
Even our guyfriends would actually watch the big ending recital/show and cheer us on!

But i understand u may not like it when you're not
very good at it. Tell your mom you'll do other things to stay healthy, and why being involved in playing music is also a wonderful thing!
GOOD LUCK! Laughing

Sleuthgirl101 on 6/22/2009 3:27:47 PM

Try traking another form of dance along with ballet such as, jazz, tap, modern, hip-hop, etc. If your studio dosen't offer these it may be time to switch studios. You also may consider summer classes so you can advance on your dance. I am also the oldest in my class (only beacause i moved) I have no regrets i help all the younger kids and am one of the best in my class. I finaly moved up a level for next year and summer classes.

I take dance and I really like it. I'm very good and my friend (who I don't really like) signed up for all of my classes. She's not good at all and she always distracts me. And at the recital she said uuuuuuhhhhhhh! I just want to get this overwith! how can I make her not be in my class.

Hey babe,

Unfortunately, you can't just wish her away. What you CAN do is tell her that her negative attitude is upsetting to you and that you want her to stop. You can also ignore her in classes when she's being distracting. If you want to get away from her for good you could try a harder dance class where all of the students will be as committed to dancing as you are!

I used to take ballet, but i stopped. it just isn't my thing. If you want to quit dancing, let your mom know and offer to do something else to stay fit that you would like.

hyperpuppy on 6/22/2009 2:56:01 PM

If you don't like dance anymore, then you should probably quit. But you shouldn't let the fact that people at your school think it's dorky stop you!

supersingershannon on 6/22/2009 2:48:48 PM

I would say:

There are other ways to keep healthy besides dancing. You can do other sports. Or, If your mom's all about staying fit then over the summer, take a walk with her one day and you and your mom could talk about the possibilities of quitting dance. You don't have to play a sport to be healthy. You can just make a workout routine, like sit-ups everyday or taking a walk every morning. Or you nad your mom could spend even more bonding time by becoming members of a gym and taking classes together. Just remember to do something that you really want to do and love.
