What's Up With This White Stuff?

I have this clear white stuff in my underwear. What is it, and why do I have it every day? Is it supposed to itch or smell?

This clear, white stuff is “a very normal part of puberty. It signals the uterus that it needs to get ready for changes that are about to occur,” says Dr. Upright. It’s sort of a warning signal that your first period will probably start within the year.

Quite simply, vaginal secretions or discharge clean any bacteria in the vagina. So, even after you get your period, the discharge continues and may be heavier at certain times of the month. Wear a panty liner if it bothers you.

Your vagina can be a little itchy sometimes, thanks to new hair growth, discharge buildup, or even a yeast infection. Yeast is usually present in the vagina but can multiply due to hormonal or Ph-balance changes in the vagina, and that can get itchy. If you have a yeast infection, you might notice a fishy odor and clumpy white discharge. When you notice any unusual smell or irritation, see your doc.

To prevent infections, Dr. Upright suggests washing thoroughly with mild, perfume-free bath soap and wearing clean, cotton underwear. Stay away from nylon panties which can cause odor and trap sweat, leading to itching or infection.

Your body is probably going through a period of change. Sometimes, heavy physical activity can lead to discharge. But if this is continuing on a daily basis, it might be best to check with a doctor and make sure everything is normal. You can never be too safe!

Hey chikas Don't worry!! u all will eventually get you period. I havent stared yet and im 12. my friend is an entire year younger than me and got hers!!! now i feel like we are on different planets! She's on "planet maturity" and im still in "la la land" or "kid world"!!! Thats probably not her perspective though because she the one who has it not the one who still has to wait!!!

I am wondering if I will get my period anytime soon. I am 11 and have size 30AA or 30A (not sure) as a bra size, I have had growth and hip spurts, have pubic hair and I have had yellowish discharge for about 10 months now. Plus, I have had a few lower (below my belly button) pains a in down below. So, do you think I will be getting my first period anytime soon? Thanks!

You definitely have a lot of the signs though it's pretty much impossible to tell for sure. You're probably really close though, so start carrying a pad with you whenever you can so you'll be ready when it happens.

Hey girly, yup it is completely normal to feel your discharge. It may be best that you wear a pad or tampon, so you won't have to worry about your underwear.

Ive been getting discharge since about the summer hols so about 4-6 months now. Its normally clear or milky coloured . it dosent really have an odor or it isnt itchy either. So i dont think its an infection . Right now my chest is sore when i touch it or lay on my side. Beneath my belly button its tender and can feel sharp pains and tenderness.
Are my periods poss on their way?
P.S Ive got an almost 30A chest and pubic hair
( no armpit hair yet )

Hey babe,

Your mom knows that you're probably getting close to having your period. Just let her know that you want to be prepared, you don't have to go into extreme detail if you don't want to.

It's really rare that a girl won't get her period and it's usually part of a much bigger medical problem, which, like I said, are really rare. You have nothing to be nervous about.

i got this discharge like everyone is saying and i went to my orthadontist (dentist for braces) and they said my body was at the age of a 13 year old and im 11 and ive been waiting for my period i really wanna know wats its like i wanna go to the doctors to see but im scared to act my mom to call cause im embarred to tell my mom i neet to buy more paintylianers!! help me to boost my confedence!!! :/

Hey girl! If it's blood that comes out or discharge, then this could be a result of almost "pushing" the liquid out when you laugh or sneeze. If you feel the sudden urge to pee when you laugh or sneeze, it's the same thing that you're almost "pushing" which puts pressure on the muscles. If you're still concerned I would suggest talking to your doctor.

Hey girl, yes this is completely normal. The arrival time of a period can be so unexpected even doctors don't know exactly what day it will come. But you will be getting, in the meantime visit our Periods site, so you can learn all you need to know so when it does come you'll be ready!

help me please!!
I HAVE 2 PROBLEMS IVE BEEN STRESSING BOUT
1.I've had my period 3or 4 times and all of the sudden I've gotten a huge increase in discharge(sometimes it just hangs the when i use the bathroom & sometimes it soaks through my undies)
2. I've been losing hair "down there" at first it started when i was on my period but i thought i was just sticking 2 my pad. But now every time i use the restroom there's 1-6 strands in my underwear
I'M SCARED!!!! I CANT TALK 2 ANYBODY ABOUT THIS

everything is totally normal! discharge levels vary, especially when your period is relatively new to your body (used to happen to me, too). Don't worry--that goes away as you get older! Wear a light days pad if you think you need/want to. And hair down there is just like hair on your head: losing a few strands a day is totally normal

Hey girl,

A pantyliner is a thin absorbent liner (basically a thinner pad) that you can wear before you get or towards the very end of your period or anytime just to keep your panties clean. It's always a good idea to have plenty of pantyliners and pads on stock all the time, and you can find them in the female hygiene aisle of any drug store or supermarket.

there's no telling when you're actually going to get it, because every girl's body prepares in different ways. everything sounds totally normal--now you just have to be patient!

it is possible! your body might surprise you with a few rapid changes that come a lot faster than you expect them to. just be patient!

i'm not sunburned,but i have a problem with peeling skin. it started on my upper arms and back, then went down to my lower arms, and is totally off of my back now, and mostly off my upper arms. i've been at volleyball camp (with no AC) for a week, doing six hours a day in the gym. is that why?

Hey babe, I'm not sure, it could be some sort of skin condition, but I wouldn't worry. Use some sensitive-skin moisturizing lotion and def. check with a dermatologist and see what he/she suggests!

Your period can totally go by when mom started hers, but it really depends on when your bod is ready to start. I don't think there's a need to worry. But if Mom is concerned then maybe you should take a trip to the doc. Hope this helps!

Hey,so I've had "it" for a year, and I've only had it like three times and when I do get it, it's terrible! I get cramps so badly that I can't even lay down, and I pace around the house. It's sooo annoying, is this normal?

Sorry, Girl. I've had mine for years and it sucks every time I get it. What does not suck is being able to have a baby one day, and unfortunately putting up with periods is necessary. Every woman's body is different, so check with your doctor if you think your cramps are extra painful about what you can do to help them.
