Hair

I have major bikini-line anxiety!

How do I shave down there? Should I shave all the hair or just some of it? I need help, fast!

True, many girls don’t dig having straggly hairs hanging out of bikini bottoms, but no one wants bright red bikini-line bumps. To avoid both, try these tips from Dr. Andrea Cambio, a New York dermatologist:

First, use small scissors to trim the hairs that hang out of your bikini. Next, take a warm shower or bath for at least 10 minutes to soften your skin. Using a new razor and fragrance-free shaving gel, shave downward in the direction of the hair. That last part is key, hence the italics. If you shave upward, against the hair, you’ll get ingrowns (ugly) and razor burn (ouch).

After shaving, don’t put panties on right away. Wear boxers for a few hours to avoid chafing. Even if you are super careful, you might still wind up with itchiness or a pimple-like sore. Don’t touch! Instead, dab with a cotton ball dipped in milk, suggests Susie Galvez, esthetician and owner of Face Works Day Spa in Richmond, Va. The hair follicles will heal in a few days, and then you can do it all over again. (Yes, fun, fun!)

MOD MOD MOD....okay so the other day i saved all of my bikini line hair off "down there" cuz i am going in a bikini to the pool soon and i didnt see how to do it till after now i have TONS of in grown hairs! there like under my skin!!! WHAT DO I DO!!! HELP!!

Hey chick,

That's totally common, don't worry!  Try pressing a warm washcloth on it for 5 minutes at a time or gently rub a soft-bristled toothbrush over the area in circular motions.  Both can help to draw the hair out.  If it worked, you should see less irritation in about 2 days.

So...I tried shaving down there years ago, and it was so uncomfortable I haven't tried since. I want to start shaving there again, so hopefully it will be easier for me when summer comes. How long does it usually take for the red bumps and itchy areas to disappear? How often do I shave it?

Hey girl! Razor burn can be prevented by moisturizing, using shower-gel, and letting the water run on your body a lot before you shave.  Afterwards use powder or lotion to prevent the bumps.  Also make sure you're using a fresh razor blade.  The bumps will start to go away the more frequently you shave.

Should I shave all my bikini line hair off?

I wouldn't. There's really no need since winter is approaching, and it can be painful if not done correctly. I would wait a couple months, then reconsider. Best,

The bottom of my rib cage is slanted outwards and it shows alot. My mom has it to she said she loved it because it made her look skinnier but I hate it. (I am definatley NOT skinny but I'm not over wieght. I would like to lose some weight though!)What should I do it's sooo embarrassing!!

Hey babe,

It's your ribs so it isn't really something that you can change by working out or eating healthy. Your mom has clearly grown to appreciate it, though she probably didn't always like it. Try to find things you like about it or else try to find ways to make it less noticeable.

Just remember you can shave just part of it, do just the bikini line and shave as much as you need to depending on how wide your suit is. Some bathing suits are really narrow down there so you have to shave more and some are wider so you dont have to shave as much. So a combination of shaving and trimming works well if you dont want to shave all of it.

There are so many good tips on gl about it. It has been a big help for me.

luckykel on 11/7/2009 2:27:12 PM

That helps a lot! I have never heard of the milk part!

Twilightfan001 on 11/6/2009 9:44:09 PM

thx that helps a lot i have had hair for a while but have never been sure of if i should shave it or which way but now i know and can be prepared for summer. also i was wondering does it itch a lot when you shave down there thats what i have heard but i was not sure

About getting soft skin down there when shaving, I think the more times you shave and the more times you use moisturizer the better. Even when I dont shave I rub the whole area down there with moisturizer and it seems to help me and I end up doing that at least once a day maybe even more. Just dont get obsessed with doing it.

Idon't shave my bikini line, I don't have much hair down there anyway and I've never really cared. But I didn't know you were supposed to shave in the direction of the hair( At least 'Down There' anyway) So that's interesting.

MOD MOD MOD!!!! Okay... So, I have shaved my legs with a razor once, and have scared myself from using them. I use nair, WHICH I LOVE!!!!, but my friend said that nair is bad for me. Is this true? Plus, what's another way of shaving without using a razor? I saw a commericial for VEET Hair Removal... is this safe for me? Sorry that this is soo long. Hope you can reply soon! Thanks!

Hey Girl, yeah its totally safe, it may cause irritation for people with more sensitive skin, you can also try waxing girl! *Cara T*

I want really soft skin down there. whenever i shave it hurts, i get the bumps, and it turns red making my skin rough. will the milk idea help that problem??

Hey babe,

It probably will, though I'm not positive. Try moisturizers and shave gels!

I know this is weird but are you supposed to have hair on your breasts, like the part your bra covers. I never ask anyone because i feel like a freak. It's awkward to change in to a sports bra in gym at school but i have no idea how to get rid of it. Do i shave? My skin is very sensitive to Nair, trust me i tried it but it is starting to seem like im the only one with this prob. Please help, Thanks!

Not weird at all! it happens when girls go through puberty, not to worry. Shaving is a great alternative to nair, and it should be pretty easy to do!

I think all of these shaving articles are great. What is so funny about my friends and I, is that we all have been shaving for a while and we still talk about it and what is best and what isnt. We go round and round what is good and what is bad.

I like the suggestions and I may try the milk, but I wouldn't want to use cold milk down there.

And my bikini is smaller than last years so I would have to shave more if I had hair except I shave it all down there so I dont have to even worry about it.
