Hair "Down There"

Is there a purpose for pubic hair?

Are you supposed to shave all the hair that’s down there?

Hair “down there” is a totally normal sign of puberty. And, yes, pubic hair has a purpose – it blocks bacteria from getting into your vagina. “Hair can appear around the vagina, throughout the bikini line and down your thighs,” says Dr. Upright.

How much hair you want to shave (if any) is your choice. Many women shave just the bikini line – the area your bathing suit doesn’t cover. Dr. Upright suggests cleaning the area you want to shave with a washcloth or loofah first. Then, using a clean razor and shaving cream, remove the unwanted hair (see page 64 for more tips).

If you have strays within your bikini line, you can pluck them with tweezers or trim them very carefully with scissors. Try a pair of safety tip scissors, like La Cross by Sally Hansen, or ones from a grooming kit. Just not those heavy-duty ones in the kitchen – ouch (and gross)! And be super careful – you don’t want to look like a Chia Pet.

one time in january, there what i thought was just discharge (or i didn't wipe good-eww) in my underwear. after that day, though, it only came off when i wiped and it only happened 3 days total. i didn't have any symptoms that girls usually do when they have their periods (except my stomach hurt, but i thought it was something i ate) so i'm not sure if i actually started. in february, the same thing happened, except it was only about one day. i know the first year your period isn't regular, but it hasn't happened again, and i'm curious to know if i actually started. sorry this is so long!

I would talk to your doctor about it to be sure, girl. But yeah, it is common for a period to be irregular, especially the first times you get it.

WHY WOULD ANYONE BE SOOO CRAZY TO SHAVE THEIR PUBIC HAIR?! If you shave your legs after a year or so the hair grows back quicker and when it does its prickily same with your armpits. Why would you want your pubic hair to grow in quicker and prickily. I understand the bikini line but not all of your pubic hair. It would grow back really quick and prickily!Ewww! Sex for your boyfriend, fiance,or husband would be (for them) like having sex with a porcupine. If anything wax or trim.

I'm like... so worried about shaving down there. Is it technically normal to do it?

cmcxo11 on 10/7/2009 7:26:37 PM

for MOD************** I would suggest drinking more. And (a little extra tidbit of info for everyone) u know how when u get up too fast, and you see stars? That is actually way more common in teens than anyone else because of how many changes are going on in our bodies. I just thought it was nice to know that it's normal!

irish_chik on 9/29/2009 4:49:25 PM

Mod i have pubic hair down there and i have alot but i dont want to shave it or else itll itch for a week.what do i do?

Hey girl,

Yikes, that's a toughie! Well if you def wanna get rid of some of the hair around your bikini line, then either shave (but be really careful to give a smooth shave) or even try waxing which is a quick fix. Or, just embrace whatcha got, girlie!

Does Anyone Know?
Of all people to watch this program on tv with (my Mom!) and it was going over brazilians and how popular it was to get waxed down there when you go to the spa and even for teens to do it. My mom made the comment about why would people want to get one and I didnt say a word that I shave down there.

But then it went on to talking about guys getting waxed down there, now I can see why we would get it done but why would guys ever want to get waxed down there? It just doesnt sound like something they need or should do? Does anyone know, do guys actually get them?

Has anyone ever had a brazilian? How painful is it?

luckykel on 7/19/2009 3:58:45 PM

Hi GL,
Thanks for the info. My mom always says that you don't shave down there, but some of my friends say you do. Thanks again for all the help!

MOD MOD MOD ok so i have the intuition razor. Is it ok to use that down there? wihout shaving creme?

A razor is ok to use down there as long as your SUPER careful not to cut yourself.  Make sure your following the direction your hair grows and not pressing too hard or anything like that.  Also, ALWAYS make sure your using shaving cream or atleast soap when you shave to avoid razor burn!

Hey girl, my mom got her period when she was 12. I got it when I was 14. Obviously that is inaccurate. However, I can tell you that sings of your period include, cramps, cravings, and discharge. <3 Jeannie

I always get razor bumps on my legs, armpits, and "down there" and i always use shaving cream and my razor has mosterizing strips.
Plus after i am done shaving i get black bumps under my skin.
how can i prevent both of these problems HELP!!!

Hey girl, if your using shaving cream and a moisturizing razor then there's not much you can do. You can also try using lotion after the shave and it should go down soon. <3 Jeannie

sure megabegabyte, shaving just has been a help for me during the times of my period.

Like I said I use tampons, and another thing that is a big help is using K-Y Jelly lubricant on the end to help it go in easier. Yes, its the same kind they advertise on tv but it is a huge help. But little tricks that help are important to know.

What is a good way to exercise during your period. I always feel crampy and gross. I don't want to stop for a week because it makes it harder to start up agian.

Hey babe,

When you're on your period it can actually help with cramps to do some light exercising, like going for a walk or a light jog.

ok, i have a few questions. i'm 13 and a 1/2 and i still haven't gotten my period. And i've been getting discharge for like at least a year. I've heard that most girls get discharge like 6 months to a year before they start their first period. And also, i have this weird lump in both my breasts. i got it when i was like 10 or 11 but it was only in one of them and now its in both. It hurts when it gets pushed on. Please help!

Hey babe,

These are things you might want to talk to your doctor about, especially your breasts. It might be nothing, but you should always be safe rather than sorry!

I only shave my bikini line. One day, on the night before my surgery, I shaved my bikini line because my surgery was somewhere sorta near that. When I was at the hospital, they made me put on the robe without underwear on! I could see why, though, because of where the area on my body was for the surgery. I was sooo nervous that they would see any pubic hair, but my mom made sure to pick nurses for my biopsy, and I thought, "well, they must've seen stuff like this before." So when the main nurse marked the spot of where on my body the surrgery would be, I noticed there were red dots where I shaved, and I was so nervous! But I just had to suck it up, because every girl deals with pubic hair and it's not like anyone at school would know about this. Ahh, the joys of puberty...

MOD MOD MOD MOD So a lot of people say they shave 'down there.' Is it OK to shave everything or just your bikini line?

Hey babe, every girl has a different preference so really it's up to you. Make sure you don't get too close to the inside though because it is super sensitive and shouldn't be knicked with the razor.

miss*edward*cullen on 6/27/2009 5:50:10 PM

megabegabyte,
It isn't hard to put a tampon in when you still have pubic hair but I think it is easier for me since I have been shaving down there.

I just feel the hair doesn't get in the way when I am moving things around down there to insert the tampon. And it just seems easier to see things down there and what is going on.

luckykel on 6/27/2009 3:06:15 PM

MOD~ I got my period today, and I feel soo bad. Im freezing, and have bad cramps. I have to go out right away. Without taking any type of pill. What are some quick ways to help?

Hey Girl, try putting a warm compress where you have cramps or try taking a quick nap. *Cara T*

I am fortunate that I dont have a lot of hair down there and on my body but one of my friends told me at last night's sleepover that she has to shave not only her bikini area but that part behind the vagina between her vagina and her butt.
I just listened and didn't say anything because when I looked down there I dont have any hair there. Will I end up getting hair on that part because that seems like a hard part of the body to shave because it is way back there?
Please help me on this one! Am I deformed or lucky?

Hey girl! Pubic hair is different for every girl - what one girl might have, another might not have. There's absolutely nothing strange or weird about you not having having hair on that part. You also may grow some there a little later on but just don't have it there now. Just remember that it's different for everyone!

i have these littls bumps all over my arms! they've been there for a long time, theyre like goosbumps except theyre ALWAYS there. i'm not sure what they are, and i really want to get rid of them! i'm always afraid people notice them. do i have to go to a dermatologist to figure out how to get rid of them, or is their a simpler way?? or is it even possible to get rid of them??

Hey babe,

There is a really minor skin condition that can show us as bumps on your arm. You can get a really strong soap that will help get rid of it. Talk to your parents or your doctor about getting the soap. The bumps probably aren't dangerous in any way, so don't worry about that!

Thanks! Smile One more question... Can you just use lotion cos I don't really feel comfortable going to the store and buying it.

Hey babes, Lotion wont really cut back on the razor burn, it may make it burn more and could potentally clog the pores.  XOLori

If you shave the whole thing how fast will it grow back? Is it better to shave the bikini line or the whole thing? And what kind of moisturizer are you suppose to use?

Hey babes,  It grows back at the same rate.  The best way to do it is set aside a new razor that you change out ever 6 uses or so and apply bikini cream like noxema bikini care.  XOLori

fieldhockeygirl14 on 6/26/2009 12:23:25 AM

How much you shave is your choice and no one should tell you how much you can or can't shave. My mom kind of talked about shaving down there when we bought one of my new bikinis that is on the small side. She said it was important to shave on the bikini line but we didn't talk about shaving all of it which is what I do.

I don't know if she would care but I read in one of her magazines that it was okay to do it. And a lot of my friends do that to because we talk about how to get rid of the itching and bumps. Moisturize moisturize and moisturize, that helps.

ok so i just had my first period at like the beginning of this month Frown i hate it and ive only had it once! the problem was that while i had it i went to alot of my friends asked if i wanted to go swimming and i kept saying no since i was kinda uncomfy and i was scared to use a tampon (idk how to use them and they are SCARY) then they kept asking me y and finally i told them but they were all friends that i trust so do u think that that is ok also i REALLY REALLY like this guy but he supposably "likes" my BFF but he never talks to her like he talks to me and he always seems nervous around me so i think that he might like me but i dont want to upset my BFF but she was never really nice to him and i stayed all night texting me but i called him with one of my BFFs and he said that he considers me a REALLY REALLY REALLY good friend so idk what that means

Hey girl! Don't worry about telling your friends about your period.  As for the guy, keep trying to talk to him and flirt with him a little.  Ask him to hang out more and see where that takes you.  Keep things open and hope for the best!  Best, Kristen
