Help for a home-schooler

Check these out, too...

  • I don't want to leave my friends behind when school ends
  • How to get closer with a girl you kinda sorta know

I've got a different situation from everyone else. I'm home-schooled. I live in a military family, so we move often, and I'm pretty smart, so home-schooling is a good option for me.

But sometimes I feel like I'm missing out. I e-mail and chat with online friends who do the same school as me but I don't have a life off of the internet. I've never met cute guys, even though I'm in ninth grade. I don't go to parties or anything. Even though I know some girls, we're not that close.

How can I get more of a life without having to go to school for it? Is there anything a home-schooled gal can do?

-Missing A Life

Hey there hon, the first thing you should know is you're not alone. I actually have a couple of gal pals who were home-schooled and I asked for them for their advice. The number one thing they both agreed on was to put yourself out there and get off the computer!

Online friends are nice, but real-life friends are so much better! Most home-school associations I know have sports leagues, so get involved. Even if you're not a star athlete, it'll be fun to meet new people and try new things.

Did we mention cute guys also play sports? It's a fun and easy way to meet dudes, especially if you ask them for some pointers. Who can resist helping a sweet girl like you? If sports aren't your thing, then try to get involved in your neighborhood's youth recreation activities. A lot of neighborhoods have drama and dance clubs.

Another way to make new friends is to volunteer for an activity like tutoring or cleaning the local playground. Not only will you be doing something good for your neighborhood, but also you'll meet new people who share the same interests as you AND you'll feel good about yourself. How awesome is that? So just because you're home-schooled doesn't mean you can't have a life. Be open to new experiences and you'll never know what kind of people you'll meet. Who knows? You may even find a new BFF!

Lots of love,
L'Oreal

Same thing here honey. You'll just have to join more homeschooling groups.

First off, you are not alone, you aren't the only unfortunate gal who is homeschooled and her social life is being killed. I'm just like you. Except I don't have a military family. So I don't move a lot. I know how you feel, I know a few girls but I'm not too close with them, and my life is mostly on the computer because I do not get to hang around outside the house much because my dad works a lot and he has to sleep a lot so he can't drive me anywhere. I'm losing friends. So you aren't alone, and remember... I'm SURE it will get better, just as it will get better for me and many other girls. x] Luck.

I had this problem, but i lived out in the country. It would of been to difficult for me to be in a sport since i had three younger siblings at the time, and my dad wasn't home to take me to practices. Lucky me, I'm in High School now!!

My advice to you is to go to public places (wherever you are living at the time) and don't be shy! Just talk to people. Being an upbeat funloving person almost always brings in friends. Have a cell? Exchange numbers with some people you meet and text them on occasion ask them if they want to hang out. Making friends is hard work and I assume its even harder when youre homeschooled but if you make an effort Im sure it will pay off!

MOD MOD HELP! I have brown hair and everybody thinks it's my fault if something happens! For example, my friend killed a bug and it was really gross so I moved like ten feet away and this guy came over, saw it, and looked at me. This other time, this guy was yelling in the classroom and my friend and I was finishing some work. When the guy stopped yelling, the sub came over to our table, moved my friend and me, and told my friend that she thought it was my fault. I am SO tired of this.

Your friends seem to have no trouble causing a problem and leaving the blame with you which has me wondering... how good are these friends of yours?  If your constantly taking the blame for your friends' actions something needs to change.  However, if you just always find yourself at the wrong place at the wrong time... it may have nothing to do with your friends at all!

Hey girlie! I think it is really cool how you are home schooled! I am not, but it sounds kind of cool! I say go and be yourself! And to make friends, you can go and volunteer for something you are interested in! Good luck with all of your moves!

I am going to be in high school in the fall, and while I have a few friends going there too, I obviously want to make more friends. I am going to join a couple clubs and stuff, but the deal is that almost everyone who is going to this school came from 1 different middle school, so they all know each other and have little cliques already. I am generally shy and antisocial, and I know that I have to be myself and just try talking to different people, but do you have any other advice for me? Or any icebreakers??? Also, I don't just want to make friends with girls, I want to get to know some guys too (just to be friends), but I tried to at this camp thing I went to and it was awkward. So help on that subject would be appreciated as well! Thanks!

I was in the same situation! Joining clubs helps A LOT, because you get to know people with your same interests. And depending on the club, these friends could be boys AND girls! don't be afraid to talk to new people every lunch period, to invite new people to hang out outside of school, or to initiate conversations with whoever you meet. Just being yourself is most important--you know that!

Omg! I am going into ninth grade, a homeschooler and my dad is in the military! Everyone assumes we're fundamentalists(because a lot of homeschoolers seem to be) but we're not! I used to have all my friends on the internet, but this past year at this school once a week for homeschoolers (might wanna see if your area has one of those) I met a bunch of friends! Also, I iceskate so I get together with some of the girls there and they introduce me to a bunch of their friends! I have made more friends in the past year than I can even imagine! MOD!
I'm homeschooled too (it's not horrible like people think), but I would like to go to public school sometime, if only for the experience. I hardly remember going to public school, because I started being homeschooled in first grade. I've kinda talked to my mom about public school, but she doesn't want me at a public school.

Hey girl! I understand that after being homeschooled, you would want the experience of being in a regular school. I would suggest that you try talking to your mom again calmly and maturely and explaining to her exactly why going to a regular school is so important to you. If she still says no, talk to her about the option of perhaps a private school. If a private school isn't in the budget (very understandable), try talking to her to see if there are any compromises that the two of you could reach. See if you two can reach some sort of compromise that gives you similar life experiences of being in a school but that you are still being homeschooled (or something that makes her comfortable). Good luck!

******MOD********
I have been going to the same school since pre-k and have had the same friends. It is a really small school. There is only one class per grade and they are really small classes(it's a private school). My 8th grade graduating class only had 10 kids. Well a bunch of kids in my class are going to the same school but I'm going somewhere else for high school. I'm switching to public school, and it seems foreign to me. there's like 300 kids per grade and I'm so nervous! My brother will be there but we won't be in the same things cuz he is a year older. I'm shy when I meet new people and I'm just really nervous. HELP!!!

Hey babe,

Meeting new people can be hard, but you already have an advantage because you're changing schools at a time when a lot of people are and there are going to be plenty of other people looking to make new friends. Try to be yourself and smile as much as you can - it will make you look approachable and friendly so people will want to talk to you first. Join as many activities as you can handle to meet a lot of new people and find some that you connect with.

Actually, I am homeschooled,
and my social status is the same as beign in school. Homeschooling gives em more freedom, I can finish school early, have longer summers and more time for friends, fun & guys. I perfer it better. I do miss the "school routine" but that's it. In homeschooling, your less likely to get into trouble and plus you can do whatever you want adn you actually teach yourself! ♥

MOD!!!!! I really like this guy and i think he might like me! I want to ask for his e-mail but i don't want it to sound that i like him. and i am worried since my 'rents are really strict!( my mom knows i like him) how can i ask it for his e-mail ( oh and i only see him at church) without it being awkward or anything? and how can i explain to my dad if he finds out? thanks so much Smile <3 -megan

Hey girl! You could try saying to him "I really wish church wasn't the only time we got to hang out! Would you ever wanna exchange email addresses so we could hang out sometime??" As for pops finding out, try talking to him so that way he hears it from you before he finds out on his own. Explain to him that you and this guy have become friends through church and you've talked about hanging out some outside of church, but you wanted to make sure that it was ok with him (your dad) first. If he says 'no', ask your dad what would make him more comfortable then and see if you two can work out a compromise.

My parents said I could order some clothes online with my cash. My mom and I were looking online and we picked out some stuff. For a few days now, I have been asking her if we could order it. But she says, "We will do it tomorrow." Or "Not right now but later." How can I get her to order the clothes? They r already all picked out and everything.

Hey babe,

Ask her if she's putting it off for some reason - in a reasonable tone of course! If she's simply busy, be patient! she'll get around to it in time.

Hey girls!! Visit my profile!!

I need some help on my hair:

I have long thin hair ( an inch above my elbows) and it is a bright blonde (it is my natural color). Well, I want to get it cut. I either want it cut like Alice's in Twilight and dye it a darker shade of blonde with lo-lights. Or I wanted to get lots of choppy layers and front bangs, but keep my hair it's natural color. I like the Alice one but I don't want to have to keep dying it if my roots show and I also don't want it to look the same every day. I want some new styles/looks. I also like the layered one, because there's diff. styles, but it's not going to be a big change to my hair now. Comment my profile because I am getting it cut this weekend and I need help!!!

I'm homeschooled, and yes, I have a life. I do lots of after-school type programs (choir, violin, karate, etc.) because a) I like them and b) I meet people through them. First comment? My friend used to be home-schooled and she HATED it. Now she goes to a school at her church. It's still really hard for her because her classmates are mean to her and she is the only one in her grade!

Check out my profile; I give the best advice!

I'm homeschooled too! This used to be a BIG problem for me. My mom has a part-time job while she homeschools my brother and I (don't worry though, I still got a perfect end-of-the-year test score! YAY!)... But anyway, I had a few friends, but I mainly talked to them through e-mail... I joined a 4-H group - just for homeschoolers - and I searched for homeschool groups in my area, and they usually do a new field trip each week! But whenever I moved last year, I decided that I wanted a change. One of the best things to do, is just go out in your neighborhood! It's summer now, so kids are out of school, and they usually hang out at the pool, or go bike riding... I went up and introduced myself to some of the people I saw out, and now have 3 really good friends in my neighborhood (plus they're introducing me to all of these cute guys)! They all go to school, but we hang out after school and on weekends. Smile Don't be afraid to go out make new friends (homeschooled or not!)! Good luck girl! Hope I helped out a little bit!
