In the News: Texting to stay fit?

A 20-minute jog around the neighborhood. That’s the plan for today. And you’ll get right to it—once the episode of Sonny with a Chance is over, once you finish this convo with your friend and just once you get around to it.

The voice in your head tells you to get to work but it’s tough to get motivated on such a slow, lazy summer day. Sound familiar? We’ve all had those days. Well now that voice in your head might be going virtual!

According to the Los Angeles Times, University of Southern California researchers are hard at work trying to motivate teens to get off the couch and get exercising, using a method with which teens are all too familiar—texting!

The basic idea is that a wireless body network would transmit signals from your body and analyze them. If you wear the device, part of KNOWME Networks technology, it would use many different factors and be able to tell if you are walking, running or doing other forms of physical activity. Neat, huh?

The next step? The device alerts the network of your inactivity and the next thing you know, you have a couple text messages on your phone telling you to get moving!

Currently, researchers are working out kinks (it’s not waterproof, for example), but the project is well underway. They’ve been motivated by statistics that reveal how many obese teens there are nationwide. They’ll start small—a few dozen teens will use the device—but hope to expand the technology as well. And it seems like others think it will work too; the National Institutes of Health just gave the study a $1 million grant.

What about you? Do you think this technology will help? Is it addressing a real problem? How often do you say you’ll exercise but then get distracted?

So how do you resist the temptation to lie on the sofa day after day? What’s your motivation to stay fit?

mod!!!! My two bffs keep txting me back and forth! I only get 250text messeges a mounth but it has been three days and i have already sent and reseved 50 text messages!!!!!!!!!! I asked my mom and dad if i can have 1000 text messeges a mounth but they said im only 13 and im too young!!! What should i do??? ps- my friends get affended easily!!!!!!!!!

Hey babe! Sad to say...but you gotta listen to your parents for this one.  If they're not going to extend your plan, you won't be able to text as often as your friends can.  Just let them know your dilemma and they'll call you more often than text! no biggie Smile

That's a great idea! It'll annoy us into exercising, but sometimes that's what it takes. Also, please join CLUB REALFAITH. WE'll answer the questions to all of your questions.

this sounds like an AWESOME idea!!! i am a total phone addict and the idea of excersizing always has me moaning.. This would probably help me a LOT! it reminds me of how i learned percentages in math--- shopping *if that cute scarf is 15$ and its 25% of...** lol

huh???..

IzZy <3 on 7/17/2009 1:34:08 PM

It sounds really cool but i don't think its a good idea. Teens are texting and calling each other way to much lately and their beginning to rely on their phone 24/7. This idea might enhance that relationship between us teens and our phones because we would have to rely on our phones even more to get us up and moving. Just a thought.

marinelife25 on 7/17/2009 9:38:26 AM

sounds kinda cool...im often finding myself at the end of the day realizing i didnt excersise becuase i got distracted.

caligal7 on 7/15/2009 1:59:26 PM

I am kind of skinny so I am not sure about it but I think that texting things to us when we should exercise is a great idea. You can get text messages reminding us when to take our birth control pills so why not this. And no I am not on it.

Getting messages like, ITS TIME TO GET MOVING, would help. We all need some encouragement at times.

luckykel on 7/14/2009 10:27:43 PM

augustjewl on 7/10/2009 3:50:25 PM

readerhi1234 on 7/10/2009 12:56:05 PM

swingchiorluvr on 7/7/2009 8:51:28 PM

i dont text, but this is an awesome idea. it would give kids motivation (or just nag them) to exercise.

drummergirl13 on 7/7/2009 4:49:13 PM

There are so many obese kids. I run miles a day! I never text so I won't even need this!

fashionista on 7/7/2009 1:26:01 PM

Oh wow thats really cool but I doubt it'll work. Here's a thought: how about txting during ur walk? thats what i do and sometimes i do more then 20 mins!

Check out my profile girls, and please leave a comment, thanks!

SportyGal on 7/7/2009 10:30:24 AM

1. Do you think this technology will help? Possibly. We text because we want to talk with friends and it is an easy way, not because we want to be told what to do.
2. Is it addressing a real problem?
Yes, it is, but the question is will it SOLVE the problem???
3. How often do you say you’ll exercise but then get distracted?
Actually, not that often. I usually don't say it, I just do it.
So how do you resist the temptation to lie on the sofa day after day? What’s your motivation to stay fit?
How good I feel afterwards, how I'd look if I lost a few pounds, how much less clothes would cost if they were a couple sizes smaller. Teens have the same motivation most adults do... hello???

hyperpuppy on 7/7/2009 2:06:50 AM

i will try this when it comes out!

laneyloo on 7/6/2009 10:30:22 PM

Great idea and tech, but probably won't work on alot of teens. It just sends you a text. Annoying, okay, but if you were watching TV you could just turn it off. Good try on the developer's part though.

firegirl410 on 7/6/2009 7:11:32 PM

OME!!! That sounds like fun I would totally lUv to try that!!!

i think that could work for some people that could be motivated by texts, but that wouldn't work for me, cuz im a competitive figure skater and i skate like 6 hours a day anyway! :]

iceskater413 on 7/6/2009 5:14:48 PM

gr8 idea, but i exersize anyway.

girlyglits on 7/6/2009 4:23:42 PM

HEY YALL COME COMMENT MY SUPER BEAST PROFILE!!!!!!!

bella_babe95 on 7/6/2009 3:37:01 PM

i think that is a fantastic idea! it would be really cool if they awarded prizes or points for doing a certain amount of excersize. besides you could just read the texts and continue sitting around if ya know what i mean!

lib173 on 7/6/2009 3:01:35 PM

this sounds fun but its raining

wednesday1408 on 7/6/2009 2:30:27 PM

That seems cool, I do have a little trouble getting motivated sometimes!!!

lilgirlyme on 7/6/2009 2:11:05 PM

That seems like a pretty cool idea. Me, along with a ton of other teenagers, probably have their phone on almost the whole day. Having reminders would probably help me get off the couch!

ShopperSoccerGurl on 7/6/2009 12:53:52 PM

thats just creepy having somehting know exactly ehat ur doing....

angel365 on 7/6/2009 12:39:39 PM

Sounds cool, but I don't think a simple text message would be able to motivate someone enough to actually get them moving...and what, are we supposed to be active ALL the time? Could we like never get a rest??

Hey girls, please check out my profile and leave a comment, thanks!

emi.jade.b. on 7/6/2009 12:38:08 PM

I don't really understand this too much..
My motivation to stay fit is to think about how working out, will help me out :]

summer_forever! on 7/6/2009 11:43:40 AM

Wow, that's interesting! Surprised

DC1fan on 7/6/2009 11:41:20 AM

That's cool, i would totally use that!

sassygirl93 on 7/6/2009 11:40:41 AM

Today I've realized that I've been thinking that I've been doing good, but I haven't really. I hope this works, I could use something like taht. It doesn't make sense to me how all of a sudden in like the 21st century a lot of people are suddenly over weight! I really wish there was just a fast fix, because I would love to be 115 or atleast 120 again. I've been watching what I've been eating but my weight is always fluctuating, one day it will be 143 then 149 and then 140 again. It's so confusing and very annoying.

To get motivated, I don't know too much to do, I usually force myself to get up and do it. Today I just don't feel like doing anything today Frown

sweetreddancer on 7/6/2009 11:36:26 AM

Uh... I'm sorry I just think that's a little creepy! I mean, don't they need your phone number to do that? You'd be giving your phone number to complete strangers! xP

eckogirl567 on 7/6/2009 11:33:38 AM

OMG I would LOVE one of those! (:
I think it would work.

toriaerie on 7/6/2009 11:30:52 AM

hmmmmm maybe i know it's hard to get up to exercise but i don't know if this would be that great...but yea it could be fixing a big problem cuz tons of teens say they'll exercise but they never do. i used 2 b a slacker but i have 2 get up at 6 am every day and run 5 miles so i get plenty of exercise during the day after a long run
