Bright and early on a slow weekday morning, you walk into school and meet up with your friends by your locker. You give your girls a hug, maybe a group hug.

Hugging. It’s how you say hello—way more personal than a casual wave and much less stiff than a formal handshake. After chatting a little, you all hug again and part ways. The same thing happens when you meet up at lunch.

According to The New York Times, hugging is on the rise and older generations just don’t seem to understand it. Why do we need to hug it out when a “hello” works just fine? Some teens claim that our generation is a lot more comfortable with each other and that hugging just seems like a natural way to interact.

Many adults don’t understand the hugging craze. Schools across the nation have banned it or enforced a three-second rule on physical contact. Yep, that means no long embraces for a BFF you haven’t seen all summer, no hugging that BF you’re super excited to see and no hand-holding in the halls!

a lot of the girls in my school hug each other and their guy friends. they hug whenevs they see each other. they also hug their bfs a lot in the same way. some of the guys hug each other 2. a lot of kids in my grade also r like "omg i love u!" but its not in a bf/gf way! its a "ur my bff" i love u. even to the guys and from the guys, its not like they're committing to marry each other. just saying heyy! but it seems like the cooler kids do that hugging thing more...

i really don't hug anyone at school, but a boy in my class just got his mom called a week ago because he hugged his girlfriend at school. i don't think hugging is a big deal though.

I hug my friends and I think its ok,but when you do it to everyone you see every 5 mintues,then yeah,it might be a little weird.

totally not creepy. it's pretty much only with your arms anyway, lol. at my school, they only discipline you if the other person didn't want you to hug them. that's pretty obvious, though. otherwise, no one cares if we hug in our school! why should they?

omg my bff kaci and i hug all the time in school. we have 4 mins between each class and our school doesn't care. it's not weird at all. 98% of my school hugs each other.

woah woah woah! why is hugging creepy?
i don't like how you guys are like hugging girls & bffs are fine but guys are creepy... my best friend is a guy and we hug like a gazillion times a day... why is that creepy... i mean literally every time i'm in the hall i hug someone... its not like i'm feeling anyone up... i'm hugging!!!!!! Grow up! i don't get it... someone please explain!

oh mi gosh..........EVRYONE hugs at mi school so im pretty cool with it, i dont mind it and i have a lot of friends to hug so yea i hug mi guy and girl friends <333 I think its stupid to ban it...in fact they already did at mi skewl but since it became more popular, they dont really say anything about it. My friends and I only hug if we haven't seen each other in a long time(ex. a long summer,or something like that). At our school, we can't interlock arms walking down the hallway-but we do it anyway! LOL!

as long as the other person is okay with it, i dont think it a problem. it just depends on the person. some people are comfortable hugging everyone and other people act kind of awkward if you try to hug them. at our school were not allowed to hug, kiss, etc. but ive never seen a teacher turn someone in for hugging. we are allowed to hold hands. but i dont hold hands with girls, no offense to people but i think thats kinda weird, to hold hands with your bff.

i think huggings coolio. i mean, its not right to ban it cuz its not like were dating or anything. it only gets weird with boys. for girls though, its just another way to say hi. and it shows that we mean somnething. it shows 'friendly' love.

I suggest you don't. It's better to wear a thin bra thats just cotton and has no padding or underwire if you feel uncomfortable without any bra at all. Best, Kristen

The hugging is OK, but at my school, it is getting kind of creepy. Girls and boys hug for like, 5 minutes, and in the middle of class, etc. It is kind of awkward when I turn around to find a boy and girl hugging right there! Some hugging is OK, but when they hold on for to long, like for 10 seconds, it can get creepy.

Not creepy at all! It's not like we hug intimately or anything, it's just cooler than shaking hands. If they banned hugging at schools it would still happen because we know that it's not wrong. I don't hug strangers either, only my friends.

Some girls did that at my school but they are gone. highest grade. sum girls hold hands..kinda odd to me. theyre not, err 'yea' or anything.

Hm... I don't do this, although many girls at our school walk around holding hands with eachother - which is sort of.....strange...
I hug my friends after we've done something, like had a sleepover, finished a project, got through a play or dance recital, stuff like that...

omg!!! My school enforced a NO HUGGING EVER rule that is really unfair since everyone hugs each other to say hello. They say that it's exclusive(HOW?)and inappropriate. We like to tease the rule by pretending to be really scared of touching each other and do a hand hug-interlocking hands instead of arms. Its really annoying since we like to do things like free hug friday and stuff. Almost no one follows the rule so people get in trouble a lot.

okay if adults think hugging is creepy than they're freaky. i always hug my friends. but now that i think of it i do occasionally get introuble for pda even though i only ever hug my friends in the hall. it's not fair! who cares if we like to give hugs!?! this is just wack!!!

...WHAT?! i'm confused... am i offending people when i hug someone? Cause i hug everyone within my ten foot radius... 3 second rule? I don't get that... hugging shows that you care... you try to stop that then i'll be mad... i have two best friends... their siblings... and i hug then 1- when i see them 2- 5 minutes later 3- about 5 more times throughout the vist and 4- when they leave... why is that a big deal... i hug everyone to make everyone feel like a friend... i mean how awkward would it be if you hugged one person then waved at the rest... if i don't know one of the people that well i'm like... you know what? i'll hug you too!

i like hug my friends all the time. i mean, when I'm sad a hug makes me realize i have friends who care about me. on the last day of school last year we all burst through the doors of out classrooms and ran toward each other and like had a huge hug fest! yeah, sometimes a hug is inappropriate, but it should definitely NOT be banned!

I love it!! It makes me happy espically when its a rough day. Plus hugs from friends are different than hugs from boyfriends. I just mekes the day better. I always look forward to my many hugs i get.

It is kinda wierd. because then a hug from your boyfriend or crush doesnt mean anything anymore. A quick hug in the beginning of the school year to your friends is chill, but hugging them EVERYDAY is way to far!! before you know it people will probably be kissing as greeting, and not just on the cheeek. anybody agree?

I guess it depends on your 'comfort zone' and who your friends are. I always hug my friends its no big deal to us it just shows how much we appreciate and care for each other..I even hug myguyfriends no biggie ;)

With your friends though, i agree that it is a peaceful way to say hello. I love my friends and i want to be able to show them every once in a while with a nice hug, plus i LOVE getting hugs from my buds.

i think it is kind of weird to hug a friend just for "fun". you are [sometimes] getting too personal with your friend, but i don't think hugging should be banned from schools. the freakishly "nice" popular girls in my grade hug each other ALL THE TIME and after a while you start to think that they just need the attention. my friends and i don't hug except when something something really horrible happens, and our lives are fine.
