ED BLOG: De-stress and Relax

Last night, the craziest thing happened. I grabbed a Passion iced tea (the kind from Starbucks—they’re amazing and way healthier/cheaper than those blended concoctions) and headed home.

When I got back, I was faced with 50,000 distractions: TV, laptop, cell phone. There were crunches to do, articles to write and chores to finish up (Fact: even as a grown-up, you have chores—bummer, right?).

In a so-not-me move, I ignored everything for a few. No tweeting, no texting, no reality TV. I didn’t make to-do lists or ponder blog posts. I just…sat and thought and sipped some tea.

After 30 minutes slipped by, I popped on the tube and flipped to NYC Prep. I watch 24 seconds before realizing I didn’t want those kids ruining my zen. I took a couple of deep breaths and went to bed.

It’s tempting to pack a million things into the last few summer nights—cute ice cream dates, late-night chats or putting the finishing touches on your first-day outfit. But, at the end of the day, spend a few minutes with yourself. You’ll hit the sheets feeling ready for bed (and not wired) and wake up totally refreshed. Or at least, I did….

Healthy hearts,
Katie A.

Blog it out…How often do you take “you” time? What’s your fave way to spend summer nights? Do you relax before bed?

let's start this off right. i'm homeschooled and going into 7th grade. we get up at 7am at my house for that. i set my alarm for 6am. when it goes off i wake up, get dressed, make my bed, and go make a cup of peppermint tea with just a hint of honey. then i go into the library and work on a puzzle i got the year before but never started on. that way when everyone else wakes up and is feeling groggy i'm already up and ready and feel refreshed.

MOD MOD MOD.
k theres this guy who likes my best friend i tried to tell him she wont like him and theres other girls out there that would like him.
Do you think that is harsh?
I regret saying that. I feel terrible. How to get him to forgive and forget?

Hey girl, nope doesn't sound too harsh to me. As a friend, you were trying to protect his feelings. But next time let him decide for himself which girl is right for him. The next time you talk to him let him know you didn't mean any harm and was only looking out for his feelings.  Chances are he may be a little mad at first, but he'll forgive you because he'll realize you were only trying to be a friend.

Thanks mod!! But also what if some days I don't have time to blow dry! Sometimes I just have to go out the door with a ponytail and it still poofs. Thank you again!!!Smile

No prob. My tip to keeping your hair ready for school is to wash and blow dry it the night before. That way, it's just a style touch up in the morning. For days you have to run out the door, try wearing your hair in a ponytail or bun.

MOD PLEASE HELP!!
When I let my hair dry naturally it poofs out like CRAZY!! I condition my hair REALLY REALLY good and it still poofs. I straighten my hair but I don't want to damage it by doing that every day. I asked my hairstylist and she recomended something but it costs $400 and you have to do it more than once a year!! Can you give me some ideas on what I should do?? Thanks!!

Hey girl, try looking for products for your hair type (there are all kinds of products out there for handling curls)--they might tame your mane, so to say. As for preventing your poof, try blowing your hair with a blow-dryer and a round brush. This will help manage the way your hair lays. As for straightening, be sure to give your hair a break once in a while or to use a shampoo for 'damaged' hair--this will help keep your hair super healthy. Good luck, girlie! Hope these tips help!

**MODERATOR**
so i had a major crush on this guy last yera, but then he moved outta town. weve been keeping in touch lately over txt and what not. he never showed much intrest so i just accepted we'd be friends. but last night he asked for a picture of me, and started saying how attracted he was to me. so wierdd. i was so happy ! but then he asked if i wore thongs, and wnated a pic and everything. i thought he was this truly genuine guy and didn't know he was like that. i refuse to send him apic butt istill want to talk and keep in touch with him cuz i sm like in lovee with him ! what do i do?

Hey girl.  Congrats on catching his attention, but that is kinda weird that he wanted some dirty pics.  Be careful, because even though you like him, you do not want a guy who wants nothing more than pics of you.  If you do not feel okay with some of his requests...just say no.  Keep talking to him, let him know what your boundaries are, and see how that goes.  Best of luck, Kristen

I watch TV and then read for about 20 minutes (a good somewhat happy book or I'll freak myself out). Also, I keep a notebook by my bed (or pretend to write on my sheets with my finger) and write down everything I'm thinking about and I fall to sleep really fast and get an awesome night sleep.

khaotickaitlin on 8/6/2009 2:19:35 PM

that is so true. during the school year, if i sleepover at a friends house, the next day i'll be rushing to finish the rest of my homework (i i have any) and then i won't be able to sleep at all that night and i'll be so tired 4 school in the morning.

periodworrier17 on 8/6/2009 1:41:13 PM

that sounds right to me. i'm always sleep-deprived for some reason. my mum says it's cuz of iron-deficiency (i'm a vegetarian, so i don't get a lot of protein) but i just think it's bcuz of stress. either way, i always have something to keep me from getting a good night's rest (hopefully that will change in the new school year...)

tammyakamiko on 8/6/2009 1:39:37 PM

haha my friend Joe says hit the sheets haha like i'll be texting him then he'll be like okay well im gonna go hit the sheets. haha i think its really funny

I signed up for the G-Life Heathy You newsletter about a month ago, and I haven't gotten an issue yet. I got one for the normal newsletter, where they had a "sneak peak" of the current issue, but I haven't gotten one for the Healthy You thing.
I'm sure I signed up, and my parents approved it when they got the email (I'm not 13 yet, 5 more months to go, lol).
Do you know if there has even been an issue, or is something not working?

Hey girl, chances are there just hasn't been an issue lately. Keep your eyes on your inbox. There should be one coming soon!

i take "me" time a lot! my fave way to spend a summer night is with my family. i relax before bed by writing in my diary. it's very calming and helps me to fall asleep at night. plus it's a way to get my feelings out on paper.

1. what is anxiety??
2. (Alyssa) i read your profile! COOL! and i saw your article with miliana i think, and you DO look like shailene (or howeva you spell her name from secret life)!
3. another ?: what age to you have to be to have a therepist. i mean like one that helps with emotional probs.

Hey girl! Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or uneasiness--for example, those first day of school jitters. The best way to get over anxiety is to relax, take a deep breath, and conquer what it is that you're worried about--you'll find in most cases it isn't as bad as you thought it would be! As for your second Q, thanks! Me and Miliana intern together and it's been a lot of fun (she actually said I looked like Shailene. Go figure!). As for your third Q, you can have a therapist at any age (so long as you can talk, haha). If you're interested in getting a therapist, talk to your folks about it. Your guidance counselor at school, for example, could even be considered one. Thanks for the Qs!
