Put an eco spin on your lunch routine

 
This year, don’t just brown paper bag it every day. Put an eco-friendly spin on your lunch routine! A few plastic wrappers tossed a day—no big deal, right? But imagine how much we could save if we all didn’t use and throw away all that plastic for 180 days this school year.

Reusable containers are the key to eliminating your trash. Go back to basics and use a lunchbox instead of a paper or plastic bag.

Reusing plastic bottles isn’t always safe, so snap up a lead-free steel one that’ll stay with ya all year. This carry-and-go water bottle’s great to tote around. Durable, recyclable, and toxin-free—what more could you ask for?

Other ways to make your lunch earth-friendly:
Do the fine-dining thing. Take cloth napkins and real silverware to the caf. Way better than using loads of paper and plastic ones.

Eat local foods. Hit up the farmer’s market or local section of your grocery store to get fruits and veggies that were grown nearby. You’ll support your neighbors and it takes less gas to transport food down the road (as opposed to ‘round the world).

Ditch the packaged snacks. Instead of buying, say, pudding cups, make your own at home and put it in Tupperware. Swap gummies for actual fruit and chop carrots into sticks (instead of buying baby ones).

We have to buy our lunch at my school because the price is included in the tuition. But it's pretty good. They've got a salad bar and hot entrees and soup and sandwiches. They have milk, orange juice, apple juice, and bottled water and this year they're going to have something called Spa Water. It's not the best food in the world, but it tastes OK, it's healthy, and you can get a vegetarian meal.

MODMODMODMOD!! I snack when I am bored-- as in all the time!!! I've been trying not to, but even when I'm thinking about how I snack to much, I still do it!!! I'm not fat, I'm one of the smallest people in class, but over the summer (while I'm not at school all day) I've gained 5 pounds!! I'm still skinny, but if this continues I won't be!! I'm really out of shape, so I can't really start a sport right out, so I don't know what to do!!! HELP!!!

It's okay, don't freak out!

Your weight gain might be normal at your age. As long as ou are still slim then don't worry about it. Try to stay as active as you can and only munch on fruits, veggies, and healthy snacks!

I go to high school and most people bring brown bags or get lunch there. I did too when i was a freshman and sophomore. Now that i am a junior, i have decided to bring a reusable tote.(mine is from Built NY. they have really cool colors and patterns but their stuff is a little pricey!)my sister is soo happy that i am being more eco-friendly! I also have an reusable water bottle (like a klean kanteen)

Hey girly, tell your mom you want to start shaving your legs. Give her a list of reasons of how this will benefit you. Also show her that you are mature and responsible enough to shave your legs, for example do extra chores around the house. This way she'll see that shaving is something important to you and that you can handle a responsibility such as this. Hope this helps!

Okay, so I really like this guy and he has all the qualities I'm looking for. Problem is, he was held back in kindergarden, so he's a year older and likes to hang out with kids a little older, including girls. He has lots of older girls that are sort of like sisters to him, but I think he might like one of them. Does anyone know of any ways to get rid of a cold sore besides over the counter medicine? The only medicine I have ever found is $15 for a little tube and I don't want to spend that much. Oh and I want to get rid of it by Tuesday, because I have school pictures. Thanks for your help!

I mostly do these things except the silverware thing, but I rarely bring things for lunch that I need silverware for anyway.

Instead of going to a farmers market. my mom has a vegetable garden and we have some fruit trees. My family saves money cause we never have to but fruits and veggies in fall.

usually, i forget to look at the menu, or my mom throws ours out, and in my elementary school, i just ate what i liked and what was etable..... aka not that much :S and therefor got the name 'anorexic chick' because im skinny (thanks, high metabolism...... yay. Frown ) and i am suuper picky. now im going into middle school, so i have to bring money (in my elementary school you're parents gave the school like 50/100 bucks, and you said you're number and they subtracted $1.50 from your account.....it was sooo nice!!! MOD: My friend wanted to know if it was possible to lose weight before school starts, which is in like 2 weeks. She's afraid that its too late to start.

 

You can't lose a lot of weight (ahhh, that's SO unhealthy) but you CAN start to tone up and get back into shape in two weeks.

I almost always bring my lunch to school i use a plastisc bag that i reuse. Sometimes i use the bag from lunch to pick up my dog's buisness on walks and in the yard.

idk i think u would be made fun of if u brought a cloth napkin. i dont think we even have cloth napkins and its a little gross 2 use a spoon/fork then keep it in your lunchbox alll day unless you like make sure theres no food on it.. idk

i got this cool reusable spoon that is also a fork and a knife!! (but its not a spork) the spoon is on one end, the fork on the other, and the knife of the side of the fork part!! Its plastic that you can put in the dishwasher and stuff/

I always eat the school's food,although those are great ideas. Theres just something about eating something warm and prepared for you, that makes me less stressed at school. It lets me relax and not have to worry about if my soup got cold, or if my sandwhich got smushed. And besides, my school has pretty good food. But I think they should get metal lunch trays instead of foam ones. Not only would it be more economical and environmentally friendly, but it would offer jobs for people who are unemplyed, who could be dishwashers. It's win-win.

I've always used a lunch box for my lunches. this year our school is getting a new lunch program and it actually sounds good (i know, surpristing, right???). i like making homemade cookies and brownies for my lunches too.

this year for 7th grade i am switching from private to public school.I have several questions. First of all i am sooo nervous since the school is like 100x bigger than my school last year. any pointers? also i have to bike to school (we live 10 mins on bike away)but for the first month at least i do not have much stuff to wear other than skirts. Should I get some tights?

Hey girly, no worries everyone is nervous about a new school year at a new school! Just know that they are kids just like you, so introduce yourself. Instead of focusing on all the stuff you're nervous about think about all the good things a new school offers. New teachers to learn from, new friends to make, new things to learn! And since you are biking to school, try leggings with your skirts and tights are good too!

Another great idea is to carry your own reusable bag when you go shopping so you don't get lots of carrier bags from stores. You totally save the enviroment and they're more comfortable to hold.

I've never really brought lunch to school in a paper bag, I've always used a lunch box.

My favorite eco-friendly meal is a bagel sandwich with locally made bagels, a fruit from my neighbor's many fruit trees, and a homemade cookie or brownie. YUM!

I also bring a pink water bottle to school that I keep refilling at the water fountains.
