Last-minute Tryout Tips!

Check these out, too...

  • Do I have to wear a sports bra when I work out?
  • Ed. Obsession Under $20: School spirit lashes
  • Why cheerleading needs to be considered a sport
  • GL's 365 best tips-of-the-day ever
  • You've gotta see this: Extreme female athletes kickin' booty
Lookin’ for last-minute tips to ace your fall tryouts? We turned to our fave experts (GL readers!) to weigh in on how to make the team.

Whether you’re goin’ out for varsity or are hopin’ to make JV, we’ve got no-fail advice for everyone!

Stay positive.
Have an extremely good attitude. One fear for me was that if I did make the team that all of the girls who had been on it before wouldn't be open to new people, which turned out to be not true. And don't forget that there are a ton of girls in the same shoes as you! -Emily, 15

Don’t be afraid to go solo.
Even though I loved tennis, I was hesitant to try out for the high school team. I knew that there would be many upper classmen and none of my close friends were tennis players. Everyone was very welcoming and the coaches didn’t judge the players too quickly. I soon got to know the team and sharpened up on my tennis. I made the team, met some older students and had a great season! -Cecily, 15

Training? Remember the basics (and don’t overdo it).
Make sure you stretch before and after and jog at a nice and easy pace. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated and be sure to wear good-fitting running shoes. -Olivia, 14

Ask for help.
Don’t feel intimidated. Ask if you don’t understand a drill or exercise! Chances are someone else doesn’t get it either. And if asking the coach is a problem, then feel free to ask another older play—they’ve probably already done the drill the year before. -Anne, 16

And 5 other fab tryout tips…
Break in your shoes ahead of time. Go running in your cleats if you have to!
Get tons of sleep. Nerves got you up all night? Eat a banana, read a boring book and get back to bed!
If you make a mistake, quickly fix it and keep going. You’re not gonna be perfect all the time and coaches like to see girls with sticktoitiveness. Be the girl with the great attitude.
Eat right and stay hydrated. Now’s the time to fuel your body (lotsa veggies, fruit, lean proteins and carbs) and drink loads of water.
Be prepared. Make a ginormous check list of everything you might need. From your hair-ties to your cleats, you should be ready. Don’t forget the little things, like an extra pair of socks and sunscreen.

Some of my comments aren't being posted.Hopefully this one is. I'm 12 and I'm in the 7th grade. In a month I'll be 13. I don't play any sports but i play the viola. So i was thinking maybe i should join one.I've always wanted to play soccer since i was little (my dad really like it) but a year ago i figured i hated it... and i was HORRIBLE at it. I'm bad at volley ball and Basketball too. I've been thinking of what i should join and i narrowed it down to Gymnastics, Dance,Cheerleading (for football or basketball.) I also wanted to ask my parents if i could take swimming lessons for a while cause i cant swim. So i was wondering if i were to join Cheer what should i do to get prepared for try-outs next year? Oh and i was also wondering what i should wear or bring to tryouts. Thanks!

Hey girlie, take some dance and tumbling classes to be ready for try outs. When they start giving out information about try outs, they'll probably tell you exactly what to wear and bring so you won't have to worry about it!

I really want to play basketball again, ( i played last year, but not this year.) so what are some ways I can get better for next season? Its next december. Thanks!

Hey girl, I'd suggest talking to the coach at your school for suggestions -- they've seen you play so they know what you need to work on. In general too, I'd stick to cardio training, jogging for example, to help your endurance on the court.

~*~MOD~*~
I just have a quick question. I'm starting soccer soon (monday i think) and I haven't played for over a year. I stopped because of the horrible cramps I used to get. Now I think they won't be as bad (i switched to figure skating when i stopped and did a little running over the summer)We stretch before every practice, but I still get them sometimes. Any tips on how I can not get them as much?
~Thanks!
~Eilsel516

Hey girl, while there's no way to stop getting cramps completely, there are ways to make them go away faster. Try gently massaging the area where the cramp is or stretching the area until the cramp stops. In terms of prevention, stretching is a sure way to do so. Be sure to stretch before you exercise each time to help your muscles. If your cramps are severe and just won't go away, try talking to a doc. They'll know exactly what to do and might have some techniques or medication that will help you.

MODMOD-i wanna try out 4 cheerleading and i think i have a good chance of making the squad (im flexible, enthuasiastic, and would make a good flyer), but my mom doesnt want me 2 try out. im involved in community theater so she says wat about when a game or practice falls on the same day as the rehersal but the play is over in early october so sports would just b starting so ow can i convince her so that she will let me try out???
thanx

Hey girl! I would suggest sitting down and talking to her about how much you want to try out for cheerleading. If you want, you could even make a list of all of the reasons you want to and why you think you would be great at it and then present it to her. It sounds like her concern is that you made a commitment to the theatre and so you have to stick with that. Tell her  that cheerleading is something you've always wanted to try. If during tryouts you hate it, you can always choose to not try out for the team. However, this is something you've always wanted to try and you'll regret at least not trying to go out for it.

--MOD-- I'm going to try-out 4 soccer team. But I'm don't even know how 2 play! What should I do? Plus I don't have the equipment! I have little time to do much exercise.

Hey girly, well now is the time to hit the field with a ball. Practice kicking and drilling the ball on your knee. Practice running and jogging. Look up some soccer tutorials online too! Since you don't have any equipment grab any ball you can find and throw on some shorts and tennis! Hope this helps!

MOD MOD MOD MOD I want to try out for cheerleading and my mom says I can, but I've never done cheerleading or gymnastics or any other sports in my life. I'm already in high school and my mom can't afford tumbling lessons. Should I even bother to try out?

Hey chicky, ever heard the phrase "It's worth a try!" ?Well it's so true. You'll never know what will happen if you don't try. Cheerleading isn't only about tumbling, there are flips and splits and lots of energy. So blow them away with some school spirit and confidence!

I've only helped pick prizes once, but the way I understand it is that we try not to let the same person win within a year of winning before. Your prize will be mailed to you.

Thanks mod! For that and also the other thing on the other article Smile I'll def try to drink more water (and I love those little lemonade/ice tea packets for water bottles. My favorite one, unfortunately, stains your lips, teeth, tongue, and pretty much any surface it touches, so I won't drink it in school because, well, I don't like looking like my teeth are bleeding). It was one of my goals for the year, to drink more water, anyhow. I guess this just means I really need to do it (cuz I wanna snack right now. Chocolate sounds good... but I don;t think they make sugar packets that are chocolate flavored for water bottles...)

Hey, mod, have a sec? This is a quickie.
I'm a snacker. I like to snack all the time, just for flavor, just to have some sort of taste in my mouth. I have friends that do that, too, and they control it by chewing gum, which they've been able to train their body into meaning "meal's over. Here's a flavor to settle down". But I have braces and have gotten in trouble before for chewing with them on. Any suggestions on what to do instead? I'd love to try mints, but I can go through a container in two days. PS I get the braces off in a few months, I just need something until then. I love gum!

Hey babe,

sometimes when your body just wants flavor it's trying to tell you that it's thirsty. Try drinking something with a lot of flavor, like juice. You can also try a mint that you have to suck on more so it'll last longer, even lollipops if it's only for a few months.
