Tampon tips!?

I can't use a tampon! I've tried and tried, but it just won't work.  I hate getting my period, not only because of the cramps and PMS but because I can't stand pads. They're so annoying to dance in and it ruins vacations because I can't go swimming.

I went on a trip to California with some friends (guys, too!) and it was so embarrassing to explain why I couldn't go in the water. I'm the only one out of all my friends who can't use one. Do you have any tips? Is there something wrong with me?

Hey girl,

There's nada wrong with you. In fact, I can totally relate to you! During my first year of my period, I used pads to avoid the pain of tampons, which I still never liked. Hopefully, the tips I learned from my experience will help you.

The most important thing to do is RELAX! When you’re about to use a tampon and you’re thinking that it’s not going to work, it won’t work. So the next time you attempt to use a tampon, think positively!

You should probably set aside a time for a trial run when you don’t even have your period. This way, there’s no pressure, mess, whatever. You can just focus on getting the tampon in there. Choose a tampon that’s small, or junior-sized since you’re a newbie at this.

Be sure to read the directions. Usually, they have illustrations to go along with them. Study carefully and make sure that you’re doing everything right. Try standing, sitting, and all different positions. Did you push the tampon OUT of the applicator?

If nothing you’re trying works, I would talk to your mom or your doc to see if they have any other suggestions. Asking a friend for tips might help as well.

Good luck!
Jean L.

I don't actually agree with the test-run advice. Taking out a dry tampon isn't exactly the best feeling. Just throwing that out there.

Tong i chicken out every time i try! im a swimmer, so i have to!! Tong i hate wearing pads as well Tong can anyone give exra tips??

Hey girl! Sorry but you're going to have to learn to at least deal with pads and tampons. Tampons are necessary for you because you are a swimmer. If inserted right, you shouldn't even feel it.

ok so my dance recital is in like 5 days and i know im about to get my period but im not exactly sure when its going to start because its not very consistent yet. i rly dont want to have to dance in a pad ugh but im also kinda afraid to talk to my mom about it and i dont know why!! any tips for bringing up the subject with her?

Hey babes, it doesnt hurt to be prepared! Try using a tampon. You only need it for a fwe hours then you can change out of your costume and put on a pad. Talking to moms about this stuff is tough but I would def just casually bring it up on the way to dance practice. xo JANA

ok hey i was wonderin, when u take a bath/shower, should u like REALLY wash "down there" like around ur vagina because i usally just go on top and around. When i get my period should i especially wash there? also, WHAT KIND OF SOAD SHOULD I USE AND HOW SHOULD I WASH IT(should i use a poof/sponge or a bar of soap??!) thanx!!!! Smile

Hey girl, you don't have to really wash down there, but it doesn't hurt to give it a quick once over like any other body part. During your period? Same thing. It doesn't have to be anything big. Soap? I like Dove personally but it all depends on your preference. Any old bar will do.

I just started my period today. I have heard tampons are better than pads, but how long should I wait before I use one?

What exactly is dicharge? I knew but I totally blanked. Also, I'm 11 but I think I'll be getting my period soon. I'm really worried that I won't be prepared or it will happen at school. OMG! What should I say to my mom? Should I tell her That I want to be prepared? Because we havn't talked about me getting my period ever. Help please!

Hey girl! You can def talk to your mom about your period! She's a girl, too, so she knows whats up! It may feel uncomfy at first but it will pass and you two can talk about it! Don't worry too much about your period, you'll figure it all out soon. Visit this page for all the deets: http://www.girlslife.com/hub/periods-period.aspx

Hey girl! Tampons don't hurt, but it does take practice. They shouldn't leak in the pool if you get the right size.

If you have all the signs you'll probably get it in a few months, probably six at the most, but it's impossible to predict it exactly. Just carry a pad with you whenever you can so you'll be ready when it happens!

Hey-
I think Jean L. has some really good ideas, but I just want to tweak one thing. When I first learned to use tampons my mom told me that I should practice using them when I dont have my period. I was really nervous, but I rea every single word on the little einstruction sheet that comes in every tampon box first. I found out that under the warnings it says not to use tampons when you dont have your period because taking it out will be really apinful. So my advice is to wait till you have it, then go in the bathroom and try it. Also you should get the really small ones to start with. Which will make it less painful. Smile Hope I helped

Hey chica, get a calendar and mark off the days you'll be on your period. That way you'll know when your next period is coming and you'll remember you have to wear pads.

Mod me again! I was bored the other day and so i went to the bathroom and took out a pad and a tampon. at first i put the pad on my underwear and walked around and the pad felt bulky and barley fit me. its a size regular is this the smallest size if i get my peorid? By the way it was kotex

Hey girl! There are thinner types you can get. Snaps for you being so prepared!

hey I want to wear a tampon for my discharge! do you think that is a good Idea? Also where should I get bras?

Hey babe,

A panty liner might be more helpful than a tampon, actually. As for bras, you can really get them anywhere. Kohl's and Target have good ones.

1. Say your name 10 times.
2. Say your mom's name 5 times.
3. Say your crush's name 3 times.
4. Paste this to 4 other quizzes. If you do this, your crush will kiss you on the nearest Friday, but if you read this and do not paste this, then you will have very bad luck! SEND THIS TO 5 QUIZZES IN 143 MINUTES. WHEN YOU'RE DONE PRESS F6 AND YOUR CRUSH'S NAME WILL APPEAR IN BIG LETTERS ON THE SCREEN. THIS IS SO FREAKY BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY WORKS

Hey girl, it's all up to you!  Pads are good for days when the flow is lighter or for when you first start getting your period.  Tampons are nice though because you don't really feel them when they're in.  Just make sure you change them according to the instructions on the box!  best, Kristen

is it normal for a tampon to slightly hurt why you take it out or is this a problem? i only wear them when i have sports practices

Hey girl, depending on how you're taking it out, it can definitely be normal but if it hurts too much, be careful that you're inserting it right. For more help on tampons, check out http://www.girlslife.com/category/pads-vs-tampons.aspx.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD If the string on a tampon breaks is it possible to pull the tampon out without having to tell anybody I want to try tampons but I need this question answered first.

hey babe! Strings on tampons VERY rarely break, so no worries! If it does happen to break you should tell someone if you can't get it out! It is possible to still get it out, but it may be uncomfortable. Although tampons are scary to talk about with an adult, sometimes adults can be really helpful!

What I started with was ultra light tamponss and they are so much eaiser to put in and with no feeling. i still use them and im a jounier in high school. im sorry your haven issues but im sure youll get it right one time or another even if you like it or not you might even like pads better after you get one in becasuse i can tell u one thing about putting them inpain free but i can alsotell u taking them out isdiffernt for eveyone for me it hurts but for my sis it feelslike nothing just dont start of with huge tampons and it might be a little essier tostart off with plastic and then use cardbord once you get the hang of it. You might like it once you start using them or you might not evryones differnt.Smile

Okay... so my period is pretty heavy! But i use the Playtex regulars and I'm afraid that they aren't enough! I use the slender kind because otherwise it hurts really bad putting them in. Any advice?

Super absorbent tampons are good for when it's really heavy and you don't want to change it every hour. If it hurts to use anything besides Playtex regulars, try using a tampon and a panty-liner. A panty-liner is basically a very thin pad that sticks to your underwear. It's great in case you have a leak from your heavy flow! Good luck babe! It will be over soon! Smile

MOD!!! MOD!!! heey mod i was just wondering if it is true that the string to pull the tampon out of you, can it get stuck in there if the string breaks?? because my friends were talking about how a lady couldn't find the string to pull the tampon out and had to go to the hospital to get the tampon removed out of her. Is this just a myth or could this really happen?? thanks!!Smile

Hey missy things like that only rarely happen, so you shouldn't worry. If the string breaks I'm sure there are other ways to pull it out, without getting surgery.

Maturity, does anyone else have friends who think they are more mature than you are because they are doing things that you arent? I think maturity is a mental thing more than a physical thing but I was talking with a friend and she was bragging about how mature she thought she was and how I wasnt.
When it comes to being mature, what do people think they should only be doing or using if they are mature?

MOD MOD MOD I've been having my period for a while now and just recently I tried tampons. They hurt when I put them in and take them out and they also feel weird when I wear them. Am I just not used to them?

Hey girl!  They may hurt a little if you take them out a little too early, or if you aren't wearing them in far enough, but they shouldn't hurt when you're putting them in.  Check to make sure your tampons have plastic applicators- I think they're the easiest to use.  If they are plastic, you can always try using a smaller size , and see if that's any better.  Best, Kristen

I ABSOLUTELY HATE RUNNING! In field hockey, we have to run 4 laps in the beginning and the end. Our coach times us too. By Wednesday, she'll tell us which girls will make the Varsity team and the JV team. The prob is, I stink at running!! I get tired after a few laps and I wanna stop so I do. I wanna keep going but I just get tired. What can I do to help me run longer and faster besides practice running? And do you know that if we make the JV team, do we still have a chance to move up into the Varsity team????? HELP!!!!!!!

ok, if you can't use tampons, i'm so sorry but try to use one when you already have your period and it's heavy. NEVER put use one or put it in when you don't have your period because it will probably get get stuck. trust me it happened to my best friend and she had to sit in the bathtub for like 3 hours and she said it hurt so bad. so do not do it! when you do it just relax and concentrate, i use tampax pearl lites because they don't hurt and easy to use. Um, I tried losing weight recently cause Im a little overweight....and I ended up gaining lbs..

Hey girl, it's normal when working out to gain muscle -- which can mean some extra pounds -- but they're good pounds. Continue working out, girlie, and eating healthy. The most important thing you can do is commit to being healthy. The rest'll come with time. Your body is still growing!

Okay. So I have had two periods so far. I want to use tampons because I keep staining my clothes when I wear pads and only pads. For ex., I just had my second one in August, and I put two pads down plus toilet paper and it still soaked through that and my jeans! Anyways, my stepmom only uses pads. I asked her if I can use them but she doesn't want me to since I am still a virgin and she thinks they are only for women and for women who have had sex before. I know that that is not true and don't know why I can't use them. I am considering going to the store and buying them myself but I would have no idea what to buy or anything, plus I would be going behind my moms back and using tampons. Help please!

Hey babe,

Talk to your mom and get a better idea of why she doesn't want you to use tampons. Maybe she'll let you try them out once and both of you can decide from there what you want to do. Until then, just change your pad more frequently that you usually do to prevent leaks.
