Tampon tips!?

Check these out, too...

  • Pad prob! How do I get them from my locker to the bathroom?
  • Have a happier period--yes, really!--with our playlist
  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?
  • What stinks down south?

I can't use a tampon! I've tried and tried, but it just won't work.  I hate getting my period, not only because of the cramps and PMS but because I can't stand pads. They're so annoying to dance in and it ruins vacations because I can't go swimming.

I went on a trip to California with some friends (guys, too!) and it was so embarrassing to explain why I couldn't go in the water. I'm the only one out of all my friends who can't use one. Do you have any tips? Is there something wrong with me?

Hey girl,

There's nada wrong with you. In fact, I can totally relate to you! During my first year of my period, I used pads to avoid the pain of tampons, which I still never liked. Hopefully, the tips I learned from my experience will help you.

The most important thing to do is RELAX! When you’re about to use a tampon and you’re thinking that it’s not going to work, it won’t work. So the next time you attempt to use a tampon, think positively!

You should probably set aside a time for a trial run when you don’t even have your period. This way, there’s no pressure, mess, whatever. You can just focus on getting the tampon in there. Choose a tampon that’s small, or junior-sized since you’re a newbie at this.

Be sure to read the directions. Usually, they have illustrations to go along with them. Study carefully and make sure that you’re doing everything right. Try standing, sitting, and all different positions. Did you push the tampon OUT of the applicator?

If nothing you’re trying works, I would talk to your mom or your doc to see if they have any other suggestions. Asking a friend for tips might help as well.

Good luck!
Jean L.

About the answer; you should NEVER use a tampon when your not on your period. The material the tampon is made out of sticks to your skin so you cant remove it until it obsorbbs water. Sorry! I dont use a tampon either!

Sorry if this is an awkward question to answer, but I want to know if you could have any guess as to when I'll get my period. I'm going to be 13 in August so I'm at the "average age" to get it. I have hips and long legs and all that stuff. I have a size A cup too. The thing is, my mom didn't get hers until she was 15. I have some discharge every once in a while. Could you please help?

Hey girl, I can't tell you when you're going to get your period (wish I could but no one knows! The thing about every girl is that it comes at a different time). What I can tell you, however, is to be prepared with pads and to look out for signs of PMS the week before (discharge, cramps, migraine headaches, chest pain, mood swings, increased appetite and fatigue, etc.)

Hey girl! Sorry but you're going to have to learn to at least deal with pads and tampons. Tampons are necessary for you because you are a swimmer. If inserted right, you shouldn't even feel it.

Hey babes, it doesnt hurt to be prepared! Try using a tampon. You only need it for a fwe hours then you can change out of your costume and put on a pad. Talking to moms about this stuff is tough but I would def just casually bring it up on the way to dance practice. xo JANA

ok hey i was wonderin, when u take a bath/shower, should u like REALLY wash "down there" like around ur vagina because i usally just go on top and around. When i get my period should i especially wash there? also, WHAT KIND OF SOAD SHOULD I USE AND HOW SHOULD I WASH IT(should i use a poof/sponge or a bar of soap??!) thanx!!!! Smile

Hey girl, you don't have to really wash down there, but it doesn't hurt to give it a quick once over like any other body part. During your period? Same thing. It doesn't have to be anything big. Soap? I like Dove personally but it all depends on your preference. Any old bar will do.

Hey-
I think Jean L. has some really good ideas, but I just want to tweak one thing. When I first learned to use tampons my mom told me that I should practice using them when I dont have my period. I was really nervous, but I rea every single word on the little einstruction sheet that comes in every tampon box first. I found out that under the warnings it says not to use tampons when you dont have your period because taking it out will be really apinful. So my advice is to wait till you have it, then go in the bathroom and try it. Also you should get the really small ones to start with. Which will make it less painful. Smile Hope I helped

Hey girl, it's all up to you!  Pads are good for days when the flow is lighter or for when you first start getting your period.  Tampons are nice though because you don't really feel them when they're in.  Just make sure you change them according to the instructions on the box!  best, Kristen

hey babe! Strings on tampons VERY rarely break, so no worries! If it does happen to break you should tell someone if you can't get it out! It is possible to still get it out, but it may be uncomfortable. Although tampons are scary to talk about with an adult, sometimes adults can be really helpful!

Okay... so my period is pretty heavy! But i use the Playtex regulars and I'm afraid that they aren't enough! I use the slender kind because otherwise it hurts really bad putting them in. Any advice?

Super absorbent tampons are good for when it's really heavy and you don't want to change it every hour. If it hurts to use anything besides Playtex regulars, try using a tampon and a panty-liner. A panty-liner is basically a very thin pad that sticks to your underwear. It's great in case you have a leak from your heavy flow! Good luck babe! It will be over soon! Smile

Hey girl!  They may hurt a little if you take them out a little too early, or if you aren't wearing them in far enough, but they shouldn't hurt when you're putting them in.  Check to make sure your tampons have plastic applicators- I think they're the easiest to use.  If they are plastic, you can always try using a smaller size , and see if that's any better.  Best, Kristen

Putting the applicator in? Ouch that sounds so uncomfortable, I am just glad I didnt make that mistake.

Why dont guys have to do things to themselves 'down there' like we do? It just isnt fair. About the only thing they have to worry about is wearing a cup down there for sports.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD
Okay. So I have had two periods so far. I want to use tampons because I keep staining my clothes when I wear pads and only pads. For ex., I just had my second one in August, and I put two pads down plus toilet paper and it still soaked through that and my jeans! Anyways, my stepmom only uses pads. I asked her if I can use them but she doesn't want me to since I am still a virgin and she thinks they are only for women and for women who have had sex before. I know that that is not true and don't know why I can't use them. I am considering going to the store and buying them myself but I would have no idea what to buy or anything, plus I would be going behind my moms back and using tampons. Help please!

Hey babe,

Talk to your mom and get a better idea of why she doesn't want you to use tampons. Maybe she'll let you try them out once and both of you can decide from there what you want to do. Until then, just change your pad more frequently that you usually do to prevent leaks.

xoxo Allie

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD can i swim without a pad or tampon in cold or awrm water???? mod mod mod plz awnser

Hey girlie,

It's best to wear a tampon when you're going swimming. If your period is really super light (like almost not even there) then it might be okay to go without. The temp of the water doesn't make a difference.

MOD MOD MOD is a tampon or pad better?

Hey girlie,

It depends, for younger gals a pad is usually better. Tampons can hurt a little when you first put them in, but if you are really active and do sports or dance, then a tampon might work better so you don't have to worry as much about leaks and stuff.

Hey girlie! Your mom could just be uncomfortable with the subject herself. Your best bet is to sit her down and ask questions. As far as the boys go, they are obviously immature and have some self-confidence issues. Hold your head high and know your fabulous just as you are!

2. whenever i have a bad day and i wanna talk about it no one will ever listen to me and i usually end up getting grouchy and not wanting to talk to anyone. do u have any tips to help my probs?

I suggest you find someone to talk to when you're upset. About the being moody, that happens to mostly everyone when they're on their period. The most you can do is watch what you say ad prevent yourself from complaining too much. Best, Kristen

When you're smaller, it takes you longer to get your period. Don't worry too much. If a few more years pass without you getting it, then i suggest you go to a doctor. Also it's not true that you can't use tampons till after your pregnant. You can use tampons any time. Kristen

You should have around 1700 calories per day. You can count calories as much as you want, but don't become too obsessive about it. If you don't want to hurt your stomach then i suggest you work out specific muscles like the muscles in your arms and legs. Kristen

So don't be ashamed of it, embrace it! And look on the bright side, fall is right around the corner so you won't be wearing your arms out much longer.

Hey chica, mhmm this is a tricky one. Since he's just a friend, it should be ok for the both of you to dance with other people. But since you want to dance with other people maybe you shouldn't bring the guy. The guy may get offended if you neglect him and dance with other guys, so maybe it's best to just ask him is it ok first.

Hey chicky, be sure to give those strands a break from all those hair products. Don't use any styling tools for a while (curling iron, flat iron, etc. ) but do use a large bristle brush to comb your hair. Wash it every other day and eat a really healthy diet. Hopefully you'll see some growth soon!

MOD! i thought u werent sopposed to use a tampon when your not on your period! So it wont hurt when u take it out.
or am i wrong?!?

Hey girl,

Yep, that's true that it could hurt a li'l without some lubrication. But if youre super nervous, it's ok to practice now. Up to you!

I'm going to be a devil girl for Halloween. I'm eleven years-old and I want to wear a little bit of make-up for Halloween. I want to wear very bright red lipstick (I am very fair complected so it looks good) and I want to wear fake eyelashes (whoa!)
I've heard that if you wear lots of stuff on your lip you are supposed to tone down the eyes, and same thing for the lips. What are some makeup tips for my dilemma?
-makeup makeover?

Hey girl, yep those are general makeup tips so that your makeup isnt overwhelming, but Halloween is an exception. If you wanna wear the false lashes and the red lipstick, go for it. I wouldn't go overboard with eye makeup though. Have a great Halloween!

Best,

ya! i had my period once in fourth grade, but it never came back. so my mom and i call it a false alarm. now, i am in 7th grade, and i still havent had my period. but my mom says when i do get it, i can always wear tampons whenever i want. but i will probably only wear them in the pool and in the ocean and crap like that.

Hey girl,

I'm sure you've heard it before but be careful with guys you meet online. Just be careful. If he's experienced, don't let him pressure you. Be yourself but be straight up that you're not going to do everything he wants when it comes to that. Talk to your mom or older sis if you can about this. I don't know deets like his age or reputation but just be conscious of stuff like that when you go out. Good luck : )

One more question. Is it possible to not notice discharge before they ever get there period? Is it common? Or is the discharge unnoticable?
Thanks!
You are a really fast Mod. Smile

Hey girl,

Thanks! Yeah, discharge is usually noticeable and you'll prob need to wear a pantyliner for that before you get your period. But again, that's just usually, so not every girl has the same pre-period routine! If you think your period is on its way, wear a pantyliner! : )

That is what I did, I practiced a few times when I didnt even have my period because a friend said to try it. Now I love using them.

Tampons arent a big deal when you learn how to use them and dont listen to people who tell you that you lose your virginity when using them because you dont, and that goes for even using the super sized thick ones. But when you first start out use the thin small ones until you have to start using the wider ones.

And a tip I learned on GL that has been so helpful is buy some lubricant for down there like KY Jelly or Astroglide and put some on the end of the tampon and a little where it is going and they slide in very easily.

So my Suggestions are,

Practice
Use the correct Size
Read the Package and look at the pictures
Relax when inserting them
Use Lubricant to help them slip in easier
Dont leave them in longer then you should

I can totally realate !! I went on a trip to florida, and I wanted to use a tampon, but I was too nervous and I could'nt do it. I did end up going swimming in the pool , but not the ocean becasue I was afraid of sharks !! The flow stops in the water though,,

**MOD**
My friend just got her period last week and she used a tampon. She said you feel a little sick for awhile but after 10 minutes your fine. Is that normal?
Thanks!

Hey girl,

If you put a tampon in correctly, you're def not supposed to feel sick. It can be uncomfortable at first and it takes a couple days to get used to. But tell her to follow the directions on the box and ask her mom or a trusted female for help. Practice makes perfect!
