Scared of Giving Speeches

I absolutely hate giving speeches, or even raising my hand in class. I get so nervous I start shaking. I know in my head that I'm going to do fine, and that I'm prepared and know what I'm supposed to say, but my nerves take charge when I'm actually talking.

The worst part is, when I'm done with the speech, everyone makes fun of me because I was so scared. Is there something I can do to stay under control without everyone knowing?

The best thing to do is rehearse exactly what you are going to say, even when asking a question in class. If you run through your words in your head, you will be less likely to stumble and more confident in your answer. You can also practice in front of your friends and BFFs at home.

Still, though, remember this: Your real confidence will come from realizing that you have valuable insights to lend to every class discussion. What you have to say is just as important as what anyone else has to say.

i turn bright red when i talk in class or around people i dont know so one of my old boyfriends gave me tha name "Rosey cheeks". that was like 2 years ago and people still call me that. my bff knows i hate it when people say something about it and im kinda shy so she sticks up and makes them stop.

Sometimes I get shaky when my school has a guest speaker and i want to ask a question and I know every person will look at me. The shaky part is there are older kids there and well idk I just dont like it.

U shouldn't be shy i know how u feel. but sometimes u should ask question or say things to ur teachers and the kids in ur class. That way ur teacher knows ur paying attention and u know what ur learning.

umm well i always thought acting was preety cool, so i joined drama troop, and auditioned for roles in the next play.
the thing is i ended up being an understudy for the main character. my friends say thats great.
but i think otherwise. i mean doesnt understudey a fancy way of techers saying you arent good enough for a real part ? i mean i DID get a part, but its tiny.
but then again , my teacher pulled me after class and said i should really start learning the lines ,because the girl is being a real snob about the part & they might kcik her off.
its just that girl is kinda friends with my best frineds. so if i got her part , i think that would make everyhting akward . right know im thinking of quiting , but my mom really says that would be a waste because she knows i like acting.
what should i do?

Hey girl,

That is GREAT. Congrats. An understudy for the main part is a big deal. It means that you are a great asset to the drama troop and if something were to happen to the lead character then you will be right there in the lime light. Don't quit and don't worry about taking her part. I would learn the lines and be ready for the part because if she loses her part it's her own fault. Break a leg.

MOD and anyone else who wants to give me advice! my brother has a gf and he knows that i hate her both of my parents know and she knows but even though i do my best to be nice to her they keep making me spend time with the other day i got really upset cuz he was spending more time with her than me. now today shes comming to my house and i hate being mad at myu brother but i can't stand her at all. i've tried talking to my brother emailing and notes but he won't listen. i think that he likes her more than me and i'm feeling really lonley cuz i used to be really close to him. how can i get him to listen???? thanks!

Hey girlie! You just have to sit him down and explain your feelings. If that doesnt work; you might have to try to get along with her. I mean, your bro sees something in her right? Maybe you will too!

I have the same problem!!! I've gradually gotten better in speeches, cause we have a speech class in my school, but when I have to do french presentations, in a whole different language my mind goes totally blank. I never raise my hand in class either.... I totally understand

I get nervous too but i don't get nervous when i raise my hand or read in my seat for the class because they won't be staring at me they will be looking at the question or the book or magazine but i can't face the class. I get sorta hyper i talk really fast but not too fast the class can't understand me but i need help how do i face the class?

Props for finding the motivation to get movin'! I suggest some quick work-outs like crunches that you can do anywhere, anytime. Want to take it even further? Try lifting some 3 to 5 lb weights or investing in workout equipment.

My friend has been lying a lot. and not just little lies. she bragged to everyone of how she has been to Paris, Italy,and Japan. but then when her mom was driving us to volleyball I said "what was the hotel you satyed at in Italy called?" and she said "what?? I NEVER went to Italy!" it made me look like a fool in front of her mom! And she has told random guys that I like them and wanna date them when I dont. Its really annoying and I want it to stop! she probably just isn't happy being herself. Talk to her about it and try not to be too accusing or mad at her. Ask her to stop - especially with the guys, because those are lies that get people hurt - and let her know that she doesn't need to lie to impress you.

MOD MOD MOD! Heyy! So my bgf told me he liked me a few weeks ago, and i told him i don't see him that way. We've been IMing alot lately and he told me this girl at his school who he kinda likes asked him out and he said yes.(btw he told me he didn't like me like that anymore) Then she dumped him cuz it was just a dare. He seemed really upset and was doin a bunch of frowny faces and was like it's officially impossible for any one to like me. And he was like I'm fat, ugly, and have bad teeth, I'm givin up girls! Try to hang out with him this weekend to take his mind off it. It's a really terrible thing to have happen to anyone and I bet he'd love a distraction. Go see one of his favorite types of movies with him or something else that you know he'd really want to do. If he brings it up tell him that the right kind of girl won't care what he looks like - you know he's a great guy and the girl who deserves him is out there and she'll see it too!

Mod last year he looked at me a lot and he talked about me when i was right there to his friends and now i don't have one class so this is like the first time he has done that but i looked at him at lunch on wenesday and on thursday when i was late to lunch i walked in late and who i liked turned around and looked at me does this mean something?

thats exactly like me. ***MOD***MOD***MOD*** im really nervous right now. School starts really soon. I have no friends in my classes so i'll have no where to sit. Im reaaaally not athletic so im nervous for gym class. And im nervous because my mom just got out of the hospital. She had criticly high calcium and other stuff like that. She came home yesterday but now shes crying and doesnt feel well and needs to go back. Im really worried about her and im really worried about school and getting prepared for school without her. I still needs clothes, school supplies..i need to pack my bag and do summer homework and school starts in like three days! Help!

You are going through a tough time in your life, but just remember it's a little bump in the road and things will look better soon. Don't worry about where you will sit. Just get to class as early as you can and sit down where you want. Then let whoever sits near you, sit near you. In the weeks to come, you can chat with the people you sit near to and hopefully get to know them. Ask another family member or friend of the family to take you to the store to get school supplies. Maybe you or your mom could have one of your friends parents take you school shopping. You might have to wait a bit for the school clothes till you mom is feeling better, but hang in there! Good luck!

haha try giving a speech to the entire grade! i had to for student council. yikes(: its really not that bad, just make sure you practice a lot, read it slowly, and make eye contact with the audience.

OMG! I used 2 have the same problem. I had 2 speak @ orientation 4 the 6th graders and so was so petrified. I was like hypervenelating and freaking out and I started shaking but when I went up there and started it was just like breathing for me. I felt like I was just talking to a friend. It was weird. And I HATE raising my hand in class. Idk y. But this year I'm going to try to more, at least in math, but idk how that'll work out.

MOD Theres a guy i really liked last year. he's in none of my classes this year. this year i go to a different school this year cuz of redistricting. the guy i liked moved and thats why he also goes to my school. my friends in his classes said this year he was kinda a jerk and seemed depressed. i am really worried about him, but i never talked to him over summer vacay and can't just walk up to him and say, "hey are you okay?" he might not even remember me! how can i ask him if hes alright?

Hey girl, try walking up to him and starting with some small talk. Gradually build your conversation to the point where you can ask. If he shares an experience he had that wasn't so good, try gently asking him if everything's alright. Before he tells you the truth, you need to develop a trusting relationship between the both of you. Take it one day at a time and let him know you're there for him. In the end, it'll make all the difference. Good luck!
