What's the deal with discharge?

I have not had my period yet, but I have noticed white stuff on my underwear. What is it and is it normal?

That white stuff is vaginal discharge and it is completely normal. Every girl has vaginal discharge but what it looks like and how much can depend on the person. Sometimes it will be white and thick, clear and liquidy or a combination of both.

The only time you might need to see your doctor about white discharge is if it has a bad odor (it might smell fishy) or you are having burning or itching sensations. These could be possible signs of a yeast infection that needs to be taken care of with medicine.

As long as your discharge doesn't come with unpleasant smells or sensations, anything you might see in your underwear is perfectly normal!

Good luck,
Liz

MOD MOD MOD I don't have my period yet and i dont have discharge either. I'm 13-But my mom, sister, and BFF never had any discharge. Is this normal that i dont have discharge?

Hey doll!  Most girls do get discharge but don't panic if you haven't gotten it yet.  Just ask your doctor about in during your next check- up.

mod mod mod i used a liner 4 my discharge but it feels like i have a dipper on !!!!!!! is that normal its my first time ever useing one

Hey babe,

Yep, that's normal. That's the reason why a lot of girls prefer tampons to pads for their periods, but for discharge a liner is really the best way to go.

Happy Holidays! xoxo Alllie

MOD MOD MOD! IM TEN AND IM GETTING MY DISCHARGE EVERYDAY FOR 5 MONTHS I BARELY HAVE PUBIC HAIR OR BOOBS MY SISTERS SAY IT DOESNT HAVE TO DO WITH PERIODS! COULD IT BE THE VANGINA JUST CLEANING ITSELF OUT OR IS IT A SIGN OF PERIODS AND IF IT IS HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE LEFT!I AM SOO NERVOUS IM SOO YOUNG!

Hey chicky, both. Discharge is responsible for getting rid of the old, dead, waste cells that line the vagina tract. And it is a sign that your period is on it's way. It can be hard to predict exactly when your period will arrive, so in the meantime get prepared with some pads and tampons and head to our

period page(http://www.girlslife.com/hub/periods-period.aspx) to learn more about them! Smile

Lynae P.

emilyhearts99 on 11/27/2009 11:16:35 PM

What is an actual pantyliner?

Hey gal, a pantyliner is similiar to a pad. It's use to absorb blood from your period. It's only called a pantyliner because it goes in your underwear, unlike a tampon. Smile

Lynae P.

ForrestRun515 on 11/27/2009 11:00:19 PM

Will my teachers get mad if I always have to change my pad in school?I heard a girl saying that her teachers got mad at her because she had a really heavy flow that day and she had to change her pad 3 times in school that day!Her teachers got furious at her! Will that happen to me?????

Hey chica, your teachers shouldn't get mad. You can't control your flow so it's not your fault. If any of your teachers do have a problem with you changing your pad, ask your parents to come and talk to them. I'm sure they'll be able to get everything straigthened out. Smile

Lynae P.

ForrestRun515 on 11/27/2009 10:59:56 PM

ForrestRun515 on 11/8/2009 3:27:53 PM

Im 12 and ive been getting quite a bit more discharge than usual .. my mum offered to take me to the docs and i hastily said no ( i was really embarrased ) ... and now im regretting my choice.. :S i think i should have gone for a check up to be safe. How do i ask her without feeling like an idiot if she can take me docs ?

Hey girl, we approve all comments that aren't inappropriate, so a previous mod must have missed your other comments. Sorry about that! Anyways, I bet youre fine because that's a part of puberty, and you don't have to feel embarrassed or silly about it. Your mom was right to ask and she's here for ya. Just go to her and say you changed your mind. She'll understand. Best,
